Technically not Bourbon, but got my hands on a bottle of Stranahans. It is very very good. Surprised that the age statement only reads "at least two years". 47% abv but super smooth and tasty.

I came really close to buying one of these recently but was able to restrain myself. Glad to hear it's tasty in case I see it again.

Cracked my Kentucky Dram last weekend for Fathers Day, and will (hopefully) be opening the bottle of Willett XCF tomorrow with a fellow member..... Otherwise, it's been a great few days enjoying a single small pour of Blanton's or Makers 46 each night this week.

The wedding and honeymoon are now done, so yay for having time again.

Went back to Japan for the honeymoon. Just stayed in Tokyo as we were there for only a week. Brought back a Evan Williams 23yr and a Evan Williams 2001 SB. I wanted to get another bottle, but luggage space was at a premium and I was already 5kg over the weight allowance. Also brought back Makers Mark cigar and found three old bottles of Four Roses mini's. The spicy and floral type, so I was pretty happy with that. I also only paid 5,600yen for the 23 as the clerk stuffed up and would not listen when we said it was wrong.

Also, I seriously recommend anyone who is going to Tokyo to go to Hermit Bar West and go into the Bourbon Side. Its in Shinjuku and dont get confused with Hermit Bar East. Whilst there, I had WT Split Label 12, Gold Foil 12, WT Japanese Tribute, WT 02 Kentucky Spirit, WT Masters Distiller Selection, WT 17yr, WT American Spirit, WT Tradition, WT Sherry, The Yellow Rose of Texas, FR Limited Edition Barrel Strength, Parkers 27yr, Parkers and finally an 8yr Willett. I was on a Turkey bend as meeting the Russel's when they were in Sydney made me really want to revisit some of them. The goid foil 12 was amazing.

Shopping wise, Liquors Hasegawa and Shinanoya are still the ones to go to. But if your looking for older bottles, then its still all about the smaller areas. Best approach I found was once you are where your going, google liquor stores in the area and just follow the map. Its hit and miss, but you can get lucky. One old bottle shop we went to had a tonne of old free promotional four roses glasses and were just happy to give them away.

Now I am on a hunt for older Evan Williams SB so I can get a bit of a tasting put together.

A nice surprise for Fathers Day today. A bottle of Blantons that was dumped on one of the days I was in Kentucky last year. It's gone to my 'special shelf' in the bourbon room. I know where it was purchased, so will track down a second bottle to open

Nice!!!.

Bought a bottle of their 'diamond Peak' version. Mind blowing to my taste buds. Actually pushed me into a honebrew experiement of sorts

Not familiar with that one, if I ever see it I will snap it up. So to my understanding Stranahans is pretty much a Scotch mashbill but produced like Bourbon, is that about right?

A Blantons in Glencairn followed by a WTRB with a 2 inch ice cube in one of those Wild Turkey Collectors Edition glasses. Rare Bread on ice... Hands down one of my favourites.

That's a great glass. Classy and a little retro.

These style glasses were in all the gift shops I was in this week. I agree they are really cool but I have an easier time bringing my frequent liquor purchases in the house than I do new glassware...

Killer melbourne spring day today so after i took the dog to the beach and went to the gym i felt like I earnt a mid afternoon drink, watching the footy now, doors and windows open, couple of blantons private mint juleps under my belt, thinking about salt and peppering the calamari i caught yesterday, maybe a sierra nevada pale ale can next with a knob creek boiler maker coming up, good weather makes booze taste so much better!

Bit of a mixed bag on Saturday night catching up with a fellow member.... Started the night with a Woodford Reserve Whiskey Sour, Kentucky Dram, Knob Creek, Willett XCF, Canadian Club 20, Canadian Club 30, Blantons...... and finished off with a Vanilla Bourbon thick shake.

I think they use the term 'American Single Malt' ??? It's aged on virgin charred oak the bourbon way vs ex bourbon casks the scotch way. Delicious stuff.

That sounds like a hell of night! Vanilla Bourbon thick shake sounds divine

It was great. I might need to tweak the recipe a bit to suit my palate, but it was a worthy start :)

I think I'm going to try one tonight! The question is what Bourbon to use... I just had a pre dinner KCSB with a nice big 2 inch cube.

Stopped in at my local purveyor of alcoholic beverages today to see if anything new or interesting had come in. Not much luck in that department but on the shelves was a bottle of High West Double Rye and next to it the Rendezvous Rye and I noticed... they're virtually the same color. I doubt there's much 16 year old rye in the Rendezvous these days. Kind of confirms what I had suspected; my brother bought a bottle of the Rendezvous Rye 4 or 5 months back, I tasted it and thought it was closer to the Double Rye than an older bottle of the Rendezvous I had a couple of years back.

I used Makers Mark, but felt the malted vanilla syrup I got from Coles overpowered the bourbon, and that was after I tripled the bourbon allocation :)

So I've got a bit of experimenting to do.... not that I mind... someone's got to do it :)

Opened an '08 wLw on Friday after the Eagles pummeled Hawthorn.

Light years better than the '09 I had previously.

Hopefully West Coast give me further reasons to have a pour in the coming weeks!

  • 2 weeks later...

Celebrated 3 months training being finished with a 4 Roses sampling I've been holding off on opening for a while. OBSK recipe and 58 % abv. Just lovely stuff.

Is that a SLR Churchill?!

If so, very lucky man!

WT 12 year, the one with the shiny gold label. Cork shattered and had to decant it. I am loving this so much, I am genuinely concerned with how fast I will drink it.

And if you have to celebrate, what a way to do it mate. Very jealous.

One of my fave Bourbons. I limit mself to drinking one pour a month to not finish the bottle soon. I have a non gold foil version.
