I opened the Lost Distilleries Blend from the advent calendar yesterday. "Batch 6 features malt whiskies from Mosstowie, Port Ellen, Glenisla, Imperial, Caperdonich, Glen Mhor and Brora, and grain whiskies from Port Dundas." (MOM) 534 bottles were released. I was really hoping this one would be stellar, but alas, it was actually quite disappointing. The finish was excessively bitter which is one of my pet peeves. At $500 a bottle and such a limited release, this is a prime example of the type of bottle that one could make a major investment without having first tried the contents and ending up regretting the purchase.

Just finished a bottle of balvenie 15 that was put in cask 10/1980...in bottle 1995. The last drink was unusually harsh for balvenie...I'm thinking the chocolate or the bourbon that came before might has messed with my taste buds

Enjoying a side-by-side of Powers John's Lane and Redbreast 12 CS.

Awesome! I love RB12. I have never tried the CS nor PJL but both are on my list pours to try.

After last drops of Sazarac 18...the Yuletide evening brings on Balvenie FR10, Old Pulteney 12 & Bunna 12...been a fine & wonderful memorable day. A final Merry Christmas to all!!!

Wife and kiddo went to bed after a quiet Christmas with just the three of us. I'll be joining them soon, but decided to stay up and have a Longrow R&K to close the night out right. This is really a nice Holiday pour. Nice smoke, a lot of vanilla, some very sweet honey and barley sugar undertones. Some oak at the end.

I started out Christmas Eve with a Glendronach 1993 #3 and then kicked off Christmas Day presents opening with my annual pour out of a bottle of Very Olde St. Nick 18 yr Rye

Last night I had a nice pour of Red Breast CS over crushed ice. It was wonderful. Great oily mouth feel, and bursts of flavor.

In the past I always had it neat and I would get the hiccups. I've had that happen on several occasions, but not last night.

Another dram of Talisker 18 this evening. Man this malt sings to me. The forward fruit notes with that sublet smoky undertone gets me every time. I can nose this glass for hours.

Shared a sample of CB's The General with the old man tonight, before sharing some CC Chairman's Reserve 100% rye with a friend who hadn't ever had rye before. My dad liked the General, and could appreciate the complexity going on. My friend thought the CC was decent, although he still prefers beer. Different strokes :)

very special 2013 Midleton Very Rare. Doesn't get

Decided I needed an Office Whisky or two, so I now have Compass Box Great King Street Glasgow Blend and Four Roses Single Barrel safely locked in one of my desk drawers. Cracked the Glasgow open today. I have to say that for me, Glasgow is the perfect peated blend. Lots of Laphroaig style medicinal peat, along with (I think) some Caol Ila, based on the chocolatey notes I found. Could be Clynelish or something spreading its coastal wings. Regardless of what ingredients went into Glaser's alchemical brew, it's even got a great mouthfeel for 43%. It did not taste young at all, so if there is any young malt or grain in there, many congrats to CB for blending it well. It actually tastes fairly mature, at least 12-15. There's a creme de menthe flavor I get from older teenage Islays that I love. The one defect is a pronounced oaky bitterness in the finish, which completely disappears with a drop or two of water. This also has the effect of bringing some nice fruity sherry notes to the forefront of the palate (and to a lesser degree, the nose). Prior to adding the water, they just sort of hung out in the background with a bit of a raisiny note.

I feel like Glaser made this blend just for me. Then again, I felt that way about the Artist's Blend too. I paid $37 for it, and honestly feel like I underpaid for the experience I got. I have to say, I think these blended whiskies might be even better done than the regular CB lineup, and that's saying something. I'd have to try it again, but I think I prefer this to Peat Monster.

Interesting. At least I was in the ballpark with the Laphroaig and Clynelish. I'm thinking the oak bite might be from the new French oak finishing. It doesn't seem too entrenched in the spirit since a tiny bit of water banishes it to the void.

Having a pour of Longrow R&K to close out the night. This has really been a nice bottle. I'll be sad to see the final 1/3rd or so go the way of all things. I see what people say when they compare Longrow to Lagavulin; favorably even.
