What bourbon are you drinking? Winter 2014/2015

Was off today so a few bourbon buddies and I grabbed lunch at a local bourbon restaurant and toured the Corsair Distillery (Nashville Micro-Distillery).

We each grabbed a flight of bourbon at lunch. They were generous pours so we all tried each: ODG114, RHF, Weller 12, Belle Meade Bourbon, Noah's Mill, Blanton's, and AE Rye.

Of these my favorite was Noah's Mill or the Blanton's. The Weller 12 was pretty tasty. One of the guys ordered an extra "three fingers" pour of the Weller 12, which was priced at $12 on the menu, and they charged him $28. Said it was a mistake and changed the price, but that when they release the new menu next week that's what the price will be for that. $28 bucks for 3 oz of Weller 12?!?!?

Anyway, then on to Corsair. For anyone not local to Nashville or Bowling Green, they are a micro-distillery. They age everything in small barrels and I think you can tell. They do a lot of "experiments" with whiskey. For example, they a Quinoa whiskey with Quinoa in the mash. They also have several hopped whiskey. Some of the hopped whiskies are interestingly good, but not so good I'd buy a bottle. A lot of their other whiskies are good, but still, I think you can taste the "quick aging" done in the smaller barrels (they use anywhere from a 5-32 gallon barrel). They also have a bunch of other spirits. I tried pretty much everything they had to offer and ended up purchasing a rum barrel aged gin. No other way to say it except it's delicious.

Anyway, that was our day, and it was a pretty damn fine day. If you're ever around, the Corsair tour was a great experience. A bunch of really friendly people.

Started the evening early with a colleague at the bar across the street from the office. Old Fitz 12yr was our choice because we are trying to decide if it's worth it to pay the premium to get this from overseas. (It's gone extinct, but a few places across the pond still have it.) Though we like it, we decided it's not worth $77 a bottle (including shipping costs). We are happy with Weller 12 at much less a cost (so long as we can keep finding it, a harder proposition by the day).

Now home, I'm back in broken record territory by starting with Maker's 46 (still loving it) and RHF (still growing on me).

No Bourbon last night, as I was fighting a headache and had a software release to manage at 10 PM. (If I just had to work, or just had a headache, neither would have stopped me).

I was eyeing my open bottle of Booker's 25th though, so I think that is in tonight's plan!

Old Ezra 101 Sippin' Whiskey, mmmmm. One of my better finds while back in MI.

Started with a pour of OWA while cleaning the kitchen, now onto EC23 and the Red Wings game. Think I'll finish with some CEHT Barrel Proof. That bottle has opened up quite nicely since I popped it three weeks ago. Getting some really nice chocolate notes that were hidden before.

Started off with the Booker's 25th. Been to long since I've visited this one. Still a very nice pour. Glad I have one in reserve, but wish I'd grabbed a couple more.

Followed up with some OWA. For some reason, it's not doing it for me tonight. Detecting a grassy note I don't usually find in it. Not bad, but tonight I'd put Larceny a cut above it.

Picked up an NAS private select Bernheim Wheat this week. Sipping now, it really reaffirms to me that I like this younger iteration of this whiskey to its new 7 yr and PHC brothers. The "doughiness" that I've seen before and am getting from thus new bottle is just so pleasant to me , and unfortunately more age takes that away. The other iterations are well done, but there is just something to the original that I like more. The best analogy I can think of is that it's like the refrigerated Nestle Toll House Cookie dough in a tube that you get at the grocery. I tend to eat and enjoy more eating it raw and uncooked, than after it comes out of the oven...
