I'm a recent transplant to Austin, TX, aka "Satan's Boiler Room." This summer, I've really been enjoying some lighter bourbons that never quite did it for me while living in NY or CA. They include Old Charter 8, regular Four Roses, Weller 90, and a blend I've been making of McKenna BiB and Old Charter 8. I keep some in the freezer for drinking neat, or pour room-temp bourbon over a heap of ice and a splash of Pellegrino water.

It's funny what an impact the heat has had on my whiskey preferences and habits. Lighter bourbons, lower proofs, ice, and club soda/Pellegrino suddenly make a lot of sense. As do cocktails, which I generally overlooked in favor of neat whiskey. Now, though, I'm all about shaken bourbon/rye cocktails - especially the Paper Plane. It's like an air conditioner in a glass!

I'm tasting my last purchase, Noah's Mill, awful! The nose is weird and taste is worst, I'm so disappointed, my last bottle was very nice. I'm throwing my glass in the sink. I'm pouring a glass of GTS 2015 to cheer me up.

Cheers!

I'm stalking your posts today it seems.  Basil Hayden is another light-ish bourbon, and from the same mash bill the lower proof OGD is another.  They are higher rye content, which I tend to associate with summer.

Thanks Gary, I thought it was about 2 yrs.

When did you change your user name?

Boss let me out of self-induced hell a couple of weeks ago :)

OT - enjoying this GBS 1792FP!  Takes water like a champ and still keeps a thick/viscous mouthfeel, with loads of chocolate, vanilla and walnuts (which surprised me - didn't recall that from the pick!).  Looking forward to enjoying this through the winter (man's gotta do something to keep warm)

Stalk away!

And Basil Haydens/OGD are great suggestions. Strangely, I bet it'll be easier for me to find Basil Hayden's than 86 proof OGD, given the bourbon-mania sweeping Austin. But I'll hold out for the OGD, as it's an old favorite I'd forgotten about.

Thank you.

Sippin' on some Woodward Bourbon out of Detroit.  Not the greatest, but not bad.

For all those people in Georgia with the 1792 Full Proof, any way to get one of those bottles up to Chicago?  I would love to try what you've all selected!

Enjoying some SAOS11 tonight. I was gonna switch it up, but just poured another glass from this bottle. It's that good.

You could just buy the 114 and add water.  3:1 ratio would get you about the same thing...  Just sayin'...

While I was cooking some jambalaya for supper tonight I had some Buffalo Trace single barrel store select. Very good barrel. I'm having a good pour of 4R OBSK now.

Finishing up tonight with an EC mingle (roughly 1/3 each of ECBP, EC18, and GBS EC14).  105 proof of HH bliss :)

Did a swallow of Blantons Barrel Select from Pearsons in WashDC (same proof, same rickhouse, etc., but a smoother entry and longer finish IMO than basic Blantons) pre-dinner.  After dinner, OGD BIB from the trashcan next to my TV chair while watching Nats vs. Braves and Skins Vs. Jets.

I had a bit of a rough week coming back from vacation at the beach, though not because of work.  This is usually a tough week for me, as it contains the anniversary of the worst firefight I was involved in during my service.  One where good men died.  It also contains the anniversary of the death of a kid from a few towns over who I had the honor of serving as part of the funeral detail for about a year later.  Young kid, barely old enough to drink.  His divorced parents couldn't even get along well enough to have a combined viewing.  Well to add on this year, a former barracks roommate I had lost touch with over the years apparently let his deployment demons get the best of him and managed to drink himself to death the slow way.  He finally passed on Sunday, and his funeral was today.  A real draining week.  I'm thankful to have my wife and kid to keep me positive and on the straight and narrow.  It's amazing, the things that could stop a person cold merely cause a slight stutter step when he or she has the love and support of family.

Having a quiet contemplative drink of Heaven Hill Select Stock SB Barrel #2 for the first two, and burning a candle for the most recent casualty of war.  It's good to be alive, y'all.

Respect to you. My Father did two tours in Vietnam on the USS Enterprise. I've seen him battle some demons. I used to go to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Cincinnati every Memorial and Veteran's Day to say a prayer for him and all the other Vets and deceased. He conquered his thankfully. Too many don't. I raise my glass of Russell's Rye to you. (I know, wrong whiskey type for this forum, but it's what's in the glass as I'm posting.) I raise it to you and all the others.

I too, thank you for your service Eric.  Yes, it is very good to be alive.  A few sips from one of my honey hole PS 4RSB's to toast you and others who have faithfully served!
