Salute!

I'm tasting a bunch of blind samples that someone sent me and I'm pretty sure there's some 4R in there, maybe two, so I'm tentatively joining you as I await confirmation of my guesses.

I've been enjoying some Weller 12 for about a week now. It really hits the spot after long days of cutting corn. Gotta love technology. I do all my SB reading and writing while driving the combine!

Still working on this bottle. Having a nice pour of this today, Angel's Envy (Port Wine Barrels). It's nice, but for the price, no way.

State of Oregon finally received its allotment of Weller 12, so I'll be enjoying a pour.

I'm enjoying a rich, thick, syrupy pour of JDSBBP (131.8).  Now this is what all whiskey should aspire to be!

Reminds me a lot of old age stated WT's from back in the glut days...

... and no hint of banana!

Poured out a generous dram from a bottle gifted to me by my baby boy, Gary a few years ago.   Willett Family Estate Straight Rye.   Four Years Old, 110 Proof (Barrel Proof I thought, though I can't seem to find that on the label, so maybe not).

Not being a giant fan of Ryes as opposed to Bourbons, this one has languished on the shelf, and needing the space I decided to honor it with a pour.     Imagine my surprise (not really) at how much I like this one.

For a young-ish rye, this is excellent stuff.     Clearly a Straight Rye by profile; but so much character, I just truly enjoyed it.      So much that I poured another nice serving later in the evening.

I originally wanted the shelf space; now, I'm wondering what I'll put there that I'll enjoy more.     Still a couple good pours in the bottle, or maybe even three, so not a decision I need to make right now.     Maybe I'll pour off a good sample to save against some future SBS.

Where in Oregon did you find it?  I'm in Eugene and checked the online inventory and none is showing in stock anywhere.  I would love to find a bottle.

Kind of a funny story, actually......

As part of my SB experience each day, I check the OLCC's online inventory (http://www.oregonliquorsearch.com/). Yesterday afternoon, while checking for Weller 12, I saw it listed. Being as it was a Sunday, I had to wait until today to check on this, to get the scoop. As the OLCC Retail Office doesn't open until 8:00am, I had a few minutes to check the website again, only to discover, much to my then disappointment, that Weller 12 had been removed. So promptly at 8:00am, I called the Retail Office, and asked the lady what was going on. She didn't know why the website would show a listing one day and not the next. She then filled me in on the current situation: the OLCC warehouse received 44   cases (12 bottles/case) on 25 August, and they were ready for distribution to the stores. She advised me to call my local store and ask that they order the Weller. So I called the store nearest me after it opened -- with no answer during regular business hours. I called my other local store, and the owner said that he'd received 2 bottles so far, and that he'd hold one for me. So, having learned long ago to strike while the iron's hot, I jumped in the car, and sped down to the store to take possession  of a bottle I've been waiting two years for.

I'm hoping you'll have similar luck down there in Duck land!

Be careful Queball. I opened a Weller 12 about a week ago and it's gone. That's why I don't open them very often. Go way to fast.

Picked up my brother in law who flown in from Australia. Sadly, his (and my wife's) grandfather passed this weekend at the young age of 104. He was a bourbon guy so we've shared some Bookers, 4RSB, and Buffalo Trace. BIL is now asleep so my nightcap is some HHSB #2 I've been saving. I mean, 104? No dementia? Can't feel too sad as he lived such a great life!

That is a great story!  I did indeed call a few of the stores in town.  One store tells me they are able to order 3 bottles a week and that this week's are spoken for.  But he put me on the list for a bottle next week, if they get 3 more.  So I may end up with one a week from Thursday.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

To the guys looking for Weller 12 have y'all had the chance to try OWA? I really enjoy both of them, but give the nod to OWA.

Not barrel proof  but a generous proof to be sure much like the new HH Pikeville rye. As I recall that was the typical proof of all of those Willett bottled MGP ryes that were of a younger age. I still have 4yo and 5yo lounging about in the bunker that are both 110 proof but from different barrels. Thought I still had a 3yo as well but that may have found its way into a cocktail glass once to often!

The first Willett MGP rye I found was 114 proof and 2 years old.  I still have a bottle.  It's the one Willett item in my bunker.  I was amazed how good it was for 2 years old.  After that they were all 110 proof and a year or two older.  Oh yeah, and the price went up too.

Bought a bottle of Old Ezra 101 several months ago and put it in the bunker and sort of forgot about it. Finally opened it yesterday and shared it with a neighbor buddy. We both found this 7 year old bourbon it to be excellent.

Thanks to member here amg who kindly provided me with some additional background info on this Bourbon.

It's one of the best values on the shelf for sure!

Yes, siree. When so many bourbons are going NAS, it is nice to have a 7YO at 101 proof for a reasonable price. I logged on after tasting this again this p.m. only to find gmrv4 and amg had beaten me to the punch.

I'm having something completely different tonight. :o I'm enjoying a vatting of Bookers Dot's Batch at 127.9 proof, and a dusty Barclay's at 80 proof. I've kinda been experimenting with this off and on for a few weeks now, but I haven't mentioned it until now. Even though I enjoy barrel proof stuff, (most recently 07 WLW and Batch #3 Stagg Jr.) the Booker's was just a wee bit too much for me even with some ice to tone it down a bit. On the flip side, the dusty Barclay's is a pretty decent bourbon, and has a lot of good flavors going on, but the low proof begs for a little something more. The combination of the two is really great.

Cheers! Joe

[Please forgive me for quoting myself.] Ok, so right off the bat there is yet more evidence that I don't know what I'm talking about. (Mrs. F. would find this shocking, shocking.) Poured some more OE 101 7YO this p.m. and followed it up with some Larceny. Today the Larceny was way, way better. Looking forward to my $20 rebate but may not wait to buy more.

Wow, been a long while since I've posted.  It's been a summer of travel, of family weddings, a few beach days, and a week camping in Acadia, Maine.

This summer's theme bourbon at home has been Larceny on rocks.  As an always-available-in-Massachusetts quality wheater, it's achieved "house bourbon" status.

The first wedding, in California, only had wine and beer at the bar, but the second in Atlanta featured EWB, a bold breakaway move from the usual caterer's choice, Jim Beam white.

Car-camping in Maine featured EWSB 2004 and Eagle Rare, but there was so much to do with activities and everything else, that most of what I brought to share with some cousins came back home with me.  No matter; there's still nothing more relaxing for me than gathering around the campfire in the cool evenings at the campsite, chatting and telling stories over drinks.
