Took a break from my neat rye marathon of the last week or so by having some lightly diluted OBSO store pick (down to about 106 proof, 10 yr.) last night and basic BT neat tonight.

Sort of missing the ryes, truth be told.

It seems that, like everything else related to liquor in this country, the rules are different from state to state. Here in Georgia they likely pay about the same as the retailers or perhaps even a tad more (perhaps they can't typically do as much volume in most on premise accounts as a large store can, not that it makes much difference with limited bottles that you only get a smattering of anyway). In South Carolina I was informed by a reliable source that on premise accounts have to buy their stock from a retailer! So it seems pretty likely they are paying more than the store does. No doubt other states are just as bizarre when it comes to how sales are handled between on and off premise accounts.

I was making my theoretical comparison based on what it might cost the consumer to buy something, presuming the consumer even gets a chance to buy it and could get it at or close to retail cost.

I believe restaurants have to buy them at retail in a state controlled ABC store in Virginia.

Finally opened a HWYKY tonight. It's batch 8.  Interesting. I don't love it but I do like it. Even my wife, who typically won't have more than a tiny sip of whiskey, is having a pour. On the nose I really get the vermouth. It tastes like a spicy Manhattan. Would be interesting to sbs this with HW'S Barrelled Manhattan. Really oily legs and mouthfeel. I think this would benefit from being cold but not diluted. I might try another oz with some scotch rocks.

Only had time for one small pour so decided to take a small dram of EC22. Sad I only have 1 big pour or 2 small pours left of this one.

Thanks for the additional info, Bruce. I suppose it makes sense that it varies by state, even if the systems themselves don't make sense.

Back on topic...I'm drinking the last of my first bottle of ECSmB. This is excellent bourbon but I still miss that extra bit of oak that many EC12 batches had.

If you have a point of comparison, I was wonder how  the 11 year single barrel compares to some of the 8/9/10 year old SiBs?

^^^I leave them for bourbon for lengthy periods of time, but every time I go back to rye it seems like I'm feeding a craving.

On topic, I've continued to punch in on a stellar PS OESV that has become one of my all time favorites.

Nice. The OESV's can rope you in.

I'm on an OF kick right now. I associate OF with fall and the holidays because that's the season when I had my first OFBB and Sig. The past few days (prior to yesterday's work trip) I was heavily into the OF 1920. You must try this one. Tonight, It's some OFSiB. I'm going to follow with some 1897.

Same in NC, although they have an extra tax added to them so they actually pay a little more. They add a special stamp to the bottle to verify that the restaurant/bar paid it. If you are a bar/restaurant owner, you DO NOT want to get caught by state officials with a bottle of liqour in you establishment that doesn't have that stamp.

Batch 8, now that is a curiosity! Did it come directly from the distillery? I think the highest I have seen in the wild was Batch 4. Was having a bit of Batch 3 myself last night.

Since I've found a second bottle of this, I decided to open this one tonight.

Cheers!

Well color me jealous... Haven't had the opportunity to enjoy a pour of VSOF and it's one I'd dearly like to try.

Enjoy!

I think the barrel is the main factor. I've had some incredible SAOS 8 & 9 year single barrels that were better than this one. This is a very good barrel though. Smooth Ambler is really some of the only guys who select great barrels, are very honest, and keep their price very reasonable.

Yippee Ki Yay.....I have two bottles and they are both batch 8.  They came from 2 different stores in the St. Louis area a couple weeks apart.  I've seen quite a bit of it around town but haven't paid attention to the batch numbers.  Both bottles I have were under $60.  I think one was $52 and one was $58.  Most places I'm seeing it now are $69 and up.  One store had it at $99!  Anything over $60 and it would be a pass for me.

Steve, How does the Sig stand up when you go SBS with those two?  At the price point, I really have a hard time with anything OF- other than the Sig.

It's a creeper. When first poured it's quite subtle but as it opens up its damn good. Prefer it to Weller 12 myself. Hope you find some! Had to bunker a load when I found it was disappearing.

Really digging a mingle of 1792 Port and 1792 FP.  50/50, so about 107 proof.  My initial impressions of 1792 Port were that it was decent, but just a bit too much port influence - and this boosts the proof while cutting the port.  Really delicious.  I think most of the 1792 Port will be dedicated to this mingle!

Enjoying the new OF1920. Love the cinnamon and brown sugar, but there is a wet wood note that I don't like. Overall, a good bottle that's easy to find.
