The joy of sharing a LE bourbon with someone who has never tried it before.

I have some clients who know I like bourbon so earlier in the year they were telling me about their trip to and tour of Buffalo Trace. They learned about Van Winkle bourbons as well as how impossible they are to find and they've been looking for an opportunity to try one ever since.

At the end of a meeting with them at the office this afternoon, I surprised them by pulling out a bottle ORVW10yr. They were thrilled to try it and enjoyed it very much.

This is how these bourbons are meant to be enjoyed.

I couldn't agree with you more.  Nothing is more enjoyable than sharing some of the harder to find bourbons with my fellow aficionados.   Having the good fortune to travel around the southeast and making friends with many liqueur store managers; I usually obtain five or six unicorns a year at MSRP.  Opening them and sharing a pour or two with friends that appreciate bourbon but aren't able to find limited ones is one of my favorite things to do.  Glad to hear others feel the same.

While they certainly deserve credit for making it possible to happen, it doesn't happen without the insistence of Jim Rutledge to bring it back and his efforts in a critical early days trial period in which he was tasked with turning things around in a short period of time.

What Steve said!    Without Mr. Rutledge's herculean efforts, not to mention his unique skill set, we wouldn't be talking about this 'cult'... or likely about 4-R in any fashion on this side of the planet.   Thanks are richly due to Jim's fighting the good fight on our behalf.

Let myself get talked into a bottle of Cooper's Craft by my favorite retailer.     Not special in any way, I hafta say.       Not worth the ask.      OK.   ...But, not great.     Kinda one-dimensional, and, although a bit different than many offerings, not a bit complex or interesting... at least to my taste buddies.     Oh well.      I'll use it in highballs with Vernors, probably.

Last night I Opened a 375ml KC that I received for my birthday. Enjoyed it with a large cube. Today I'm trying to decide if 4 o'clock is actually 5 o'clock while riding out a hurricane. It may be a WT101 kind of afternoon.

See, you should have done them a solid and mentioned "Oh, I got to try that in Kentucky!  Pretty lousy stuff, eh!"

Although, as irony would have it, this is what I poured this afternoon as well (for science).  Still in the midst of working up notes for a review, but I'll leave it with "unimpressive" for now.  On the bright side, it made my next pour of OCPR stand out as amazing!

Mr Rutledge deserves all of the credit he gets for quality and persistence that he put into our cherished brand.

However his insistence to bring the brand back  to prominence and back to Us in the Good 'Ole USA, fell on deaf ears until Kirin came into the picture.

Also, I think without the Japanese people's passion for Bourbon & other whiskeys, Kirin would not have purchased the Four Roses brand.

This all true. Seagram's wouldn't listen but Kirin gave him a shot. The key piece in the timeline though is when Jim came back from the east coast and was given 6 months to turn things around. If he hadn't been successful, they were going to shut it down and shift production elsewhere. Without his efforts during that time period we wouldn't be having this discussion today.

I just poured a 4RPS OBSF to celebrate the Penn State win. It's probably my favorite of the Private Selections I've had over the years.

Drinking some Old Forester 1920 from a just purchased and freshly cracked bottle. I really like it so far. I'm liking this at 115 proof as a few drops of water added have worked quite well. I have to say that so far this does not taste like OF bourbon. That house style flavor that you can pick up in pretty much all OF iterations as well as in WR is not here. At least yet. We'll see what happens after it's been open for bit. It's also possible my palate is in a different place than usual today. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens.

Interesting about the tasting notes.  I'm on the lookout for a bottle myself.

The college football pours of the day have been Old Fitz BIB and BT

Nice.  Two of my favorite things.  College football and bourbon.

Stagg Jr. 132.5 followed up by ECNAS. Both were really hitting the spot tonight.

Drinking a shot of Booker's bourbon at home with a buddy.  We continue to be wowed by the intensity and depth of this very fine whiskey.  And by how dominate the UW Huskies were over the Oregon Ducks today.

I was feeling slightly under the weather Friday and yesterday, so it's been a couple of days since I've had anything to drink. Regardless, its been a busy weekend. My wife and I were out and and about early yesterday. We started off with a nice breakfast, then went and picked up my new glasses. Then we went over to my mother in law's, and I replaced the battery in her van. After that, we did some shopping. I got a new pair of steel toed boots for work, and at the same time bought a couple of water lines to replace the ones in our washing machine. (One blew out the Thursday night. ) Today it was another early start. After breakfast it was time to work on the washing machine. After replacing the water lines, we figured we might as well clean up the dryer since it's been a while since we've done that. We used our "Lint Lizard" and cleaned out the lint trap and dryer vent, then we replaced the dryer flex hose. Put in a new furnace filter and drained the hot water heater too. And finally, got some laundry started. Wheeeew. Feeling well and good today, so after all the work was done this afternoon, I rewarded myself with a couple of pours of 07 WLW:P Thanks Dawn and Jon. ;)

Cheers! Joe

Starting on this bottle. Pretty nice, way better than the regular Frontier.

You found DN1843 'very good'?   You sir, are easily pleased... a commendable and worthy characteristic to have, especially in today's market for Bourbon.

I find DN1843 to be a bit underwhelming; but very useful to mingle with those Bourbons I've found too woody.    It seems to blend well with everything I've tried it on, and has yielded nice results most of the time.

Finishing my 1792 evening with a single barrel pour; I had a Port and Full Proof to start. I've been struggling to like the Full Proof.

W12 (gorgeous), followed by Old Forester Single Barrel, which sure has that 'banana' nose . . . something I don't get from OF Signature at all.

I just finished the last couple of pours from a handle of ER10.  I've been pretty dedicated to this handle for a few weeks (at least as much as I was to its predecessor, which also left us way to early), as I'm sure most here have noted (at least subliminally:lol:) by my recent notations herein.

To the point... historically, I've always been a BT mashbill #2 guy, while MB #1 has always been a fall back go to.  But, as I've said earlier, current ER10 is a homer!  Graceful, refined, balanced, giving, satisfying, yet still subtle, understated, and teasing.  She is the girl who turns every head in the room, while her lures always have your attention, and somehow, she manages this without doing anything to excess, extreme, or outrage.  Unlike many others who vie for our attention, she always remains dignified, proper, a true lady.  No, you won't see any cosmetic enhancements, risqué designer ware, or trendy tattoo sleeves on this classic beauty... for she knows she doesn't need it, she already has you... hook, line, and sinker.

All this, while current BT MB#2 is either AWOL, or a shell of it's former self.

Now, it is time to turn my focus toward something else.

That, is all...

What didn't I drink today!!! Started the day with some Wild Turkey Diamond Anniversary while watching my Colts get very luck and actually win a game. Followed that up with two health pours of a store select KCSB. We then moved on to a RY10yrSB that went down like water. The night cap was actually 2 pours of OWA which unfortunately has only one good pour in it before the high green monster has his way with it. All in all, my liver is not happy with me at the moment. :(

Last night: a bit of everything. Went to dinner at a friends house and conducted a bourbon 101 session after dinner so we tasted BT, 4RSmB, WT101, KC9yr, HMcK10yr, and WTRB

Tonight, I'm punching the cult card with 4RSiB, 4R PS OESV, and will finish with 4R PS OBSV.

Yes. Now, whether it was improved for the re-launch in July, I don't know. But yes, I like it, and I really like the nose, especially after it is open for a while. But it definitely needs time to open up. Have you tried it since the re-launch?

I read that this may be similar to Old Fitz BiB, but it tastes better to me. The last Old Fitz BiB I had was very harsh. This is not. Although I do wish there were more options for wheated bourbon, and I miss the availability of Weller 107.

Hmmmm, I have not tried DN1843 lately.    The newest bottle I own is from about April or May.   Do you really find that much difference in recent bottles?   My impressions over the last few years is that it's gone more or less steadily downhill, with a marked drop-off around the time the label changed.     Maybe I need to invest in a 'new' one?????    Hard for me to find space for a brand that has regressed so steadily, though.     I'll have to hear more good reports to push that button, I think.

This morning a little WLW 134.8 neat.  A wonderful way to kick off a week of vacation.
