How far are you taking the proof down? I guess it's substantial, to get such a drastic shift in flavor profile?

Indeed - for a 25ml pour I was adding around 10-15ml of water.

You get the free tasting as well even though it's a free tour - even better!

That's cool !

Started with BT then WSR last night. The BT is funny... some nights it is very sweet full of caramel and spice, a delicious dram, other times it just hits me as meh... Had chili for dinner last night so that may have obstructed the palate slightly... I have about an inch and a half left in the bottle and have a Store Pick in the bunker that I'm dying to open...

Buffalo Trace has free tour (i assume, no testing at the end ??) I love them both BT and FR are on my list next time i 'll go to the US.

Will.

Did you mean tasting Will? If so, yes they have a tasting at the end of their (free) tours. Usually regular stuff like ERBT and their Bourbon Cream. FWIW, I've been on a few tours there, and I've always liked the hard hat tour the best.

Cheers! Joe

Took 30 days off from alcohol. Getting back at it tonight. Starting with EWSB2002, wanted a lower proof to get back into it.

My father-in-law gave me a generous pour of Blanton's Liquor Barn Single Barrel Select. Very smooth.

Went with Barrell Batch 10 for my second pour. Very, very spicy. It must be high rye, but it also has some floral notes. Even though it is a bourbon, it reminds me of a High West rye.

Not bourbon, but had a small dram of Handy.  Now I'm keeping the rye theme going with some Michter's LE barrel proof rye.  It holds up surprisingly well even after following the heavyweight magic of Handy.

I finished off a long-lasting bottle of Basil Hayden.  It is likely the last bottle of this "artfully aged" bourbon I will buy.  It's time to dig into a handle of WT101.

It figures. Having the last pour from a bottle of Barterhouse and I stumbled upon what makes this whiskey really sing..... pasta with a kick-ass red sauce. For whatever reason the sauce brings out both a sweetness and some dark cherry flavors I've never noticed before.

This bottle was never remotely close to being a favorite and had been open for a couple of years, so it's nice that it finished on a positive note.

HMMM. I've never liked it either but I've got some left. This experiment will have to be tried. Thanks for posting this.

Like i said, it's on my bucket list, i'm waiting for my son to grow a little before taking a 9 hours plane's trip, he's 3 years old. I tought there was one tour, but apparently they're lots of them, very nice.

Cheers!

Will.

I ran the gamut last night. HWRR, 1792SB and OGD114. Both of the bourbons were a bit stinging after the rye. Funny how that sounds. The HWRR is a nice one.

Broke away from HMK10BIB for the opener tonight but stayed in the family with EWBIB - you can taste the family resemblance for sure and the youth of the EW shows through a little - still for $14 on sale this month it's a very good value sipper - going to have to do a vertical tasting of EWBIB - HH6BIB - OE7101 - and HMK10BIB as a blind and see how that comes out might even throw Old Heaven Hill BIB into the mix

Having the last pour of a Michters 10y SB.  I did not want to put it in the empty bottle support group (2017) because I think that should be for the bottles that you truly enjoyed drinking.   Not that it was horrible but it was definitely the worst Michters10 year I've ever had.

Tonight I finished off my father-in-law's bottle of Buffalo Trace Single Barrel Select (selection #33). Lots of Carmel and butterscotch. Delicious. It was better than the Blanton's that I drank after it.

Edited by OldFitzWithTheGoldLabel
Add the Blanton's that I had. Correct a typo.

Today is a completely ordinary Friday. Sometimes you don't need a special occasion to drink a special whiskey. Sometimes drinking the whiskey IS the special occasion.

Now THERE ya go! I will sometimes do this for the same reason. It's meant to be enjoyed after all.

I've only had two pours from the bottle and love it so far. The only other WLW I've had was either the 2012 or 2013 that a buddy had. I drank a lot of that bottle but it was early in my bourbon journey.  I loved it, but i can't recall enough to compare to this one.

The 2016 is perfectly drinkable neat. It tastes wonderful. I'll have to spend more time before I try to pick out the individual complexities of the flavor but I am comfortable saying that it is a very well executed iteration of the profile. I followed it up with an OWA PS that I absolutely love, and it was not even close to the WLW. Good job by me for research purposes but I'll not do that again! I'd rather enjoy that OWA when it's the star of the night.

Anyway, I paid $300 for the WLW bottle and while I'm disappointed I couldn't find it at a retail price I don't regret the purchase at all. Indeed, after tasting it last night it reaffirmed the purchase for me. It would not have been the choice others would have made, but WLW is probably my favorite bourbon and if I can't find it at retail, I'd rather pay more than go without.

Quality has definitely dropped the last couple of years. The 14 was excellent but the 15 and 16s I've had were really nothing special and absolutely not worth the price. I'll be skipping this years.
