Opened the Joseph Magnus this afternoon - first impressions are

  • different - like a tennessee whiskey is part of the blend possibly as the flavor I'm picking up is like something I find in those, this must be the Sherry/Cognac coming through
  • not bad
  • quite a bit of spice
  • tasting the tannins with the bitter on the back of the tongue
  • great mouthfeel - thick almost
  • reminded me of syrup when I was pouring it
  • sweetness on the nose like a sorghum scent - brown sugar
  • lasting and good finish - whatever the flavor I'm picking up on the front end goes away pretty quickly
  • not much for finished bourbons usually but the way this one finishes is pretty intriguing

Nice review.  Sounds intriguing.  I really like the format of your review, by the way.

Opened up a bottle of Buffalo Trace. Tasting nicer than the first bottle that I bought a couple years back. With that bottle I was  getting a passing earthy taste, dirt really along with sweet bourbon flavors. It was a bit suspect because I didnt see earthy as a typical note for BT. Really enjoying this one, the finish goes out lingering  on a real good note.

Consumed a 750 of 1792 yesterday.  Yes, I had a little help. ;)

 

I've found this brand to be a welcome addition at gatherings.  It doesn't do anything to offend, and stays balanced and neutral from start to finish.  Just a smooth, easy drinking bourbon.

I haven't had one of these in some time because they've jacked the price up to $40 out here. What are you paying for it?

It may have been on sale, but current regular price here is $26-7.99ish.

Thanks for confirming. That's about what it used to be out here. For whatever reason, the entire 1792 line had their prices jacked in WA state about a year ago.

Yes, I recall discussing that with you.  For whatever reason, we're still holding on price, as well as availability here (FL as well).  I can't speak for elsewhere.

Couldn't agree more.  It's also a classy looking bottle, so everyone thinks its expensive and goes straight for it. :)

$24.99 for 1792 SmB, $31.99 for 1792SiB, both in stock OTD.  Haven't seen a price hike on 1792s here in the PRM, yet . . . . . . . .  :ph34r:

 

FYI, I just paid $47.99 + 6% sales tax for 1792FP last week @ the VA ABC store 'cause we can't get any more up here.  YMMV.   :(

$25 ish here in KY.  Pretty much every store has some on the shelf.

My awesome wife came through again.

Today is my birthday, so took the day off and she surprised me with this little gem.

Couldn't resist cracking it open right away.  14 year OESK.  Delicious!

 

Also put some in my 4R solera bottle.

1792 Single Barrel is $62.99 out here plus our insane taxes. Needless to say, I have not purchased one.

That is soooooooooo out of line; even in WA state it doesn't make sense.  I really don't see single barrel very often in Ky, but I did recently pick up a PS (ABC) in FL for less than $30.  BTW, it was a great bottle!

If you can find a store that has done a store select single barrel I'd suggest it - lower price of course but I've found that these selections have been better than the SB from Barton

Rough day at the office and wanted to just have a few drinks without really concentrating on the bourbon... Cracked open a WSR which fits the bill quite nicely! A quality pour and low enough on the proof that I can enjoy 2-3 large glasses without issue.
