Just poured some Old Heaven Hill Bottled in Bond. Tremendous value, although I slightly prefer the VOB BiB.

I used to look for VOB BiB, but in frustration I tried a bottle of VOB "6" and now I have no interest in the BiB... There would have to be a HELLUVA difference... the 6 was about undrinkable (to me) even mixed...

Your impressions?   ...Level of satisfaction?     ...Estimate of cost/benefit (valuer)?

Since this my first review, I will do the best I can with only 3 years of Bourbon knowledge under my belt. When we pulled the bottle out of the container, first thing we noticed was the color. Darker than expected, but at 12 years I was very happy about that. The nose was a sweet oak for myself, as we let it sit in our Bayberry Drive Bourbon Club Glencairn glasses for a good 10 minutes admiring this special pour. I loved that this bourbon started out sweet with a vanilla, caramel, oak mix, then the rye kicks in at the end to finish the four grains. The finish was unbelievably smooth for the bottled in bond and is a must buy for me any day, as are most Buffalo Trace brands. This is the first 4 grain bourbon I've tried and I believe they got it right. I am looking forward to trying others to compare. As for the $85 price tag, I'm just glad to have sampled it once. Cheers!!!

Doin' the Trace tonight. I'm working my way up the ladder with very small pours of Weller SR, BT, ETL, and soon, Stagg jr. It's been a pretty darned good week, and I'm getting a jump start on the weekend. :P

Cheers! Joe

I'm doing the opposite of Joe, I want a kick to get started, so I'm having some Stagg Jr. (over ice) to start the night.

Thanx for taking the time to post your thoughts.     I hope I get a chance to take a spin on this wheel at some point.

Barrell Bourbon batch 4 watching playoff hockey.  But what's with all the empty seats in Anaheim?  Looks like a preseason game

Having a Beam night, started with a JB SB that I just popped and was a lot more Oak forward than I expected, followed by a KCSB and chased that down proof with some JB Black 8yr

Having a sbs of ECBP batch 12 and batch 13/A117. Batch 12 wins this hands down. The wife agreed as well and she tried them blind.

Revisiting regular old EW black label after a couple years hiatus.

Forgot how decent this stuff actually is for the price point.

The wife thought it something far more expensive.

Nice! Did you ever do a SBS with the 15 & 16?

Doing a SBS of regular BT and a store select single barrel. No contest, the SB is both smoother and richer tasting.

I poured a nice taste of Old Fitz 12-year, and, though I did enjoy it, I again felt that it seemed to be right up against the edge of being over-aged.    I don't recall this impression from years ago; but the last couple bottles have seemed that way to me.   It's more than likely my palate has changed a little; but, in any case I decided to follow the 12 with a pour of Old Fitz BIB, which I also enjoyed; but, found a bit 'simple'... not a lot of depth, as I've generally found it.

I said to myself; "Self... you need to blend these two together about 60-40 in favor of the 12, and let it rest a few days then try that."   So, that's what I did.

I'll try that blend in a few days, and post here whether I determine that to have been time and Bourbon wasted, or a worthy experiment.

Well, I did as I said, and have now rested, and tasted it.    I wasn't disappointed; but wasn't delighted either.     I'd have to say the Old Fitz 12-yr wasn't better than this blend; but, the blend wasn't a whole lot better than the Old Fitz BIB either.    Maybe there just isn't enough depth in this combination to work with.    The blend of 12/BIB at 60/40 maybe isn't the best option?????     Maybe I need to try 70/30 . . . or even 80/20.     But, I'm not sure this is worth the effort.     I wonder if the mashbill and the current stock of 12-year just isn't liable to yield fabulous results from any mingle.    I'll have to give that some thought.     Meanwhile, I'll finish this mingle and enjoy it fairly well.    All in all, not a wasted effort, nor Bourbon wasted; just not blowing my hair back.
