It's all about a very distinct orange taste now, acidic orange juice with more orange zest on the finish. I'm not sure I'm liking the direction this is going, very different from other BT distilled juice I've had. What did it taste like when first opened? Kane
3 hours ago, smokinjoe said: What did it taste like when first opened? I find that many BT products -- both rye recipes -- taste quite similar. Typical bourbon flavors, plus the main distinguishing factor being an additional spoonful of brown sugar, cocoa, and lots of wood bitters for a tannic finish. This was no exception. It's now become quite citrusy, reminiscent of orange soda. Also a bit sour, acidic. It's not bad, but it was similar to something like Stagg Sr. during the first week, and now it's not as good. 1 hour ago, 0895 said: Which batch is it? Proof? Batch 3 from 2014 I believe. 129 proof. BTW. While looking this up I just saw that other reviews also mention orange & citrus.

flahute
I've been in a bit of a rut for the past week. It's a good rut though. Late last week I got in my shipment from the latest Bourbon Crusaders pick - two Russell's barrels and a 4R OBSV PS cask strength barrel. I've been concentrating on them to determine if I want to order more and how much. I'm pleased that they are all fantastic. The 4R is a tier 6 barrel (near the top of the rick) and as such experienced more evaporation so it's a 120+ proof bourbon. It's classic OBSV amped up on all levels (with no mintyness) with the addition of some oak complexity despite being only 8yrs 4mos old. This is the beauty of tasting blind and not being influenced by recipe or age. The first Russell's barrel is a short barrel (we only got 80 bottles out of it) and it has a unique character and oak influence that you'd expect. It's fantastic and evokes dusty Turkey flavors. The second barrel is a typical solid Russell's barrel. I haven't grown tired of any of these despite drinking them solid for a week plus. I've been mixing in pours of a JD Single Barrel Barrel Proof throughout and it's been stellar and has held it's own in the midst of our barrel picks. I really am impressed by this whiskey. It actually evokes some Old Forester flavors. Does anyone else get this? They are both BF products of course but are distilled at different locations with different mashbills (and I assume different yeasts) so am I crazy? Either way, this is a great whiskey that I'm happy to have. It will be a mainstay in the cabinet.

I have felt that the 100 pr brand had gone very thin and astringent, and seemed very young in a raw way. If this new bottle is representative of what Briwn-Foreman is doing now, well, I'm happy to say they've turned things around. Particularly, the startlingly explosive nose from the glass that is full of that Goetze's Caramel Cream flavor, with a goodly sense of rickhouse oak. Nothing astringent, and nice body over the palate. Nothing game changing here, but more importantly, nothing that I had found offensive in previous iterations of this label. It's simply...good. Finish is such that I know the whiskey was there, and didn't fall off into oblivion. Not a ton of complexity with this whiskey, but it is very solid, and tastes like a well made bourbon should taste. The defects that I detected to my palate previously are gone. We'll see how future tastings of it go just to see if this is simply a good palate night. But, at first blush I'm happy with what I'm tasting, and more so, with what I'm smelling on the nose. It is wonderful. It would be a nice thing to bring a B-F bourbon back to the fold of nice and inexpensive 100ish proofers along with HH, JB, Barton, WT, et al., on my bar. I wonder how does it compare to Woodford? Reason I ask is because WR is found in every bar and is sometimes used as a promo product at liquor stores, e.g. I think TW sells it for $25 which is only a few bucks more than OF. Lower proof however. Edited August 26, 2017 by Kepler added question

That's usually the unique characteristic I normally get from OF/WR products. Or are you talking about something else? Either way, all this talk about JDSiBBP makes me think I need to open up mine and give it a whirl for the first time.

The OF1920 wins the shootout easily due to the thickness, mouth feel, depth of flavor, and finish but the OF100 is a younger first cousin that displays similar flavors and a very similar nose. Instead of the 1920 we need it to be the 1897 BiB for a fair fight. Would be nice to know what the extra $$$ gets you, probably better aged juice. Be back in three hours," with a straight face - well, from downstairs. Back on thread - I had some MM 46 when the Mets @ Nats started to close out VBT 566 (and to remind me of what I miss by not drinking more MM 46 and CS) but switched to Old Crow (which I'm sort of sorry I bought for VBT 565 but also felt guilty bad-mouthing it without having had any in maybe 15 years; NOW, I can badmouth without feeling guilty). I refuse to pour it out and I refuse to ruin good meat by putting it in BBQ sauce. So, it will be the "last" pour of the evening when I want "more", and at 80 proof it's just thin enough to be ok as the third or fourth pour. Insanityabounds
Not Bourbon but I found this Macallan 12 moving some boxes I had stashed at my parents a few years ago. Its been quite a while since I have had any but the color in the glass is amazing. The smell and taste are pretty great too. To think some NDP/NAS Bourbons are being priced in almost the same category as this now days is amazing to me.
