I purchased a 4 pack of Backwoods Bastard and I drank one last night.  The mouthfeel was a little thinner than the bottles of last year's I have been drinking over the past few months.  Also, I was getting a stronger chocolate taste last night.  I think I'll let the other 3 bottles age for a bit and see what happens.

I picked up a four pack as well but they also are available in bombers this year which I haven't seen before. I will probably try one of the singles soon along with some that have aged a bit. But the bomber I think I will definitely set aside and see how it does with time. Not one I could or would want to open and drink on my own anyway.

How long do you guys set them aside? I understand with the high alcohol content it makes it more conducive to bunkering it away for a while. I ask because I too have picked up this years batch but have yet to try.

That's a bummer indeed. I usually go to drink/buy a couple Consecrations since it rarely (if ever) shows up here anymore. I guess Pliny mania is still alive and well.

You've tried Consecrations? That's cool. :)

The answer is basically I set them aside until I'm ready to drink them.  I'm not trying to be funny.  It's basically how it works for me.  However, other than the ones that I know age very well like KBS, BCBS, and Abyss.  I typically will drink them within a year or so of buying them.

If it's an annual release like Backwoods, KBS, BCBS and I can buy a few, I will typically try one a little while before the new batch comes out to see how it's doing.  If it's tasting worse, I will try to drink the rest sooner rather than keep aging it.

There is no tried and true way to know how long to keep the beer as far as I know but experimenting has been a lot of fun for me.

Hope this helps.

I have Backwoods Bastard going back at least 4 years. They do change a bit over time but at least in the case of the Backwoods Bastard so far it has always been for the better. I have some JW Lee Harvest ales finished in different barrels going back over a decade. Last time I tried one it was still tasty but I suppose they can decline at any time.

Yeah. Experimenting. That's a good way to put it. When it comes to barrel aged beer and letting it sit in the cabinet at home for 6+ months is not something I have explored. I buy the beer and within a week it is usually gone. Just how it goes.

These high ABV beers are a different animal because they can sit for a little while and still be okay. I have a few in the cabinet now and I think I will let them mellow a few.

Some are just off. I remember buying a Stone Wooly stout or whatever they call it a while back. Love stouts, been my favorite beer for as long as I can remember. While everybody was losing their marbles over the latest IPA release I paid them little attention. Anyway, this stout by stone was in the 12 to 13 percent alcohol range. Probably the most foul tasting beer I have ever had. It was like drinking a low proof vodka.

Anyway, point probably was I don't believe aging was saving that beer. It's a fine line between a good earthy tasting beer with a punch and something where the alcohol overwhelms everything else going on.

Great information. Thanks.

In the case of the old JW Lee it is useful to carefully pour or "decant" the bottle to avoid the collected sediment. Gets a little chewy at the bottom!

This was quite nice a Christmas Ale aged with cherries over a year in Chardonnay barrels. Really enjoyed it and at a manageable 8.9 abv.

Very different than the standard offering which I enjoy.

Switching from bourbon to beer aged in bourbon barrels. Always a good and brave pint.

So how does it compare to regular Bud?

I think it is much better. Thicker, richer, Fuller, sweeter. Not too high on the hops either. I find it delightful.

I'll be on the look out.

Meanwhile, I have been enjoying Stroh's in the re-designed package.  It tastes better.  I don't know if it's that I got a really fresh batch, or if the brewery tweaked the recipe (or both).

I loved Stroh's in my early 20's, before Pabst ruined it. I also used to love Old Style.
