What Bourbon Are You Enjoying (Winter 2017)

SB Blend to start the weekend!  For my tastes, the cliche fits...The sum is greater than its parts.

I need to give this another shot, I’ll need to do a decent size batch. Felt it wasn’t greater than each part on its own.

Bought a half pint of WSR for a planned wheater Blind SBS I plan on doing this weekend.

I had some not Blind WSR next to some W12, there not even close, no way it’s just age that separates these two. There must be some barrel selection on what they keep around.

Left to right:  Barrel #168, Microbatch UCF #3135 (featured in a recent Whiskey Advocate article on Unchill Filtered whiskey), "Oops - it's a microbatch", and UCF Microbatch "Freaky Friday".  Notice the trend of getting away from barrel numbers and going to hints about the story behind the bottling?   Gotta' get the bunker cleared a little to get back to the opened bottles, tho', yes?   

 

 

I just recently received a sample of an UCF store pick of OWA and am excited to try.  That's quite the stockpile.  I wished VA ABC did picks.

If you poke around Instagram or other places where younger drinkers would often frequent, it has reached mythical proportions. I am as big of a Weller fan as anyone here but the name alone these days has people frothing at the mouth and paying $100 for a bottle of Special Reserve. I asked a young store employee recently how often they get Weller in stock and he laughed at me because “that’s basically Pappy.”

GTS 2017. The first sip was sublime. Caramel, vanilla, some light wood and some heat. Still the king! I’m also noticing the legs. It just sticks to the glass.

Enjoying a nice pour of Blanton’s while watching some UFC. Been enjoying the barrel proofers a lot lately and it is nice to dial it back a notch every now and then.

Tonight I find myself appreciating Blanton's. I remember the first time I tried it and all the expectations it had to meet as one of the more highly regarded bourbons at that time.

I remember liking it but deciding that at its price there was plenty I liked just as much at a lower price such as Elmer T Lee.

Hahahaha............who could've seen the great Elmer T Lee shortage and hype storm coming back then?

Since then, BT brands have suffered from various rolling blackouts and shortages which only fed the hype more.

Prices for all bourbons have steadily increased, some to absurd levels.

And there sits Blanton's. Just as good as it ever was. Prices have gone up a bit, but not by much. (Granted, this is market dependent.) 

So as I sip this final pour from a bottle I just emptied I find myself pondering the possibility that Blanton's, once one of the high end toppest of shelf pours, may now actually be a value.

I've been on the forum for a few weeks, so this is new for me .

But I agree with your findings, I've had similar results. When I feel a tickle in my throat, or if it's a little sore, I have a healthy pour of some bourbon and it goes away the next day. That's probably why I only get sick about twice a year. I've gotten my brother on the bourbon train with the great taste plus medicinal benefits lol.

Is there a big difference between the normal four roses single barrel and single barrel obsv ps? Is it worth the extra cost?

Second pour from the newly opened 1920. Really impressed with this one, and the second best thing I've had after JDSB BP in recent memory.

 

I know it doesn't make any sense, but after every sip for a split second I'm reminded of Ron Zacapa 23 in a "free association" way. And before my very first sip, I gave it a quick nose and said "molasses". The caramel is very pronounced, unusually so for a bourbon imho, maybe that's why.

2oz pour of ORVW (and same for my dad in town for a quick visit) at bar in Los Angeles for reasonable price of $12/oz...life is good.

That's my favorite recipe.  I almost opened one yesterday, I have 3-4 bunkered, all 10+ years old.  Went with an ECBP instead though.

IMO a big difference.  I like the regular single barrel, but the PS OBSV's I've had have been substantially better.
