mbroo5880i
Last night, I said I have been trying to not drink on weeknights but decided to have a couple of pours while doing some research. Tonight, my excuse is that tomorrow is my last day of work until after Thanksgiving and there is a football game on and I believe there will be a lunar eclipse earlier tomorrow morning. Anyway, I am enjoying a pour of Rossville Union Savory Rye tonight. Rossville is MGP's (or whatever it is called today) branded rye. For whatever reason, it doesn't seem to have fared as well as other bottlings of their rye for NDPs. I believe pricing has been part of the problem. The bottle was originally $39.99. I have seen it as high as $54.99. I paid $19.99. While technically a store selection, the Savory Rye is one of three different blends - Sweet, Savory and Spicy - sold through various retailers. Mine was from Big Red Liquors. The blends consist of different mashbills of straight ryes. The sweet is presumably closer to the lower rye profile while the spicy is presumably closer to the higher rye profile. I assume savory is somewhere in between. While I like the traditional MGP 95/5 rye, I really like these different blends. My favorite is the sweet blend followed by the savory. I prefer both over the traditional 4 year old BIB. Probably because they are closer to bourbon while still having the spicy rye finish. They are also supposed to be 5 to 6 year old rye whiskey. The Bourbon Guy did a review of the Savory from another retailer last year. His review is spot on. I find the nose faint and the finish to be on the longer side of medium. However, I certainly pick up mint, cinnamon, clove and juicy fruit gum. A great rye whiskey for the price I paid. Probably not for any price over $35 since I can get Pikesville for $39.99. I also like WT101 Rye which I can generally find for less than $25. Rossville Union Barrel Select: South Lyndale Liquors, Savory. Details: 50% ABV Nose: Mint, cedar, cinnamon, clove Mouth: Dry and spicy with mint, cinnamon, and clove. Finish: On the shorter side of medium length. Notes of herbal mint, cinnamon, juicy fruit gum, and cedar. Thoughts: Very tasty. I like this with a splash of water. Water brings out sweetness and accents the juicy fruit gum on the finish, making it very reminiscent of certain Four Roses bourbons. Phil T
Stopped at the local yesterday. I picked up a 1783 and a Old Overholt 114 and headed to the checkout. As I was standing there, I spied these in the closeout bin. I put the OO back on the shelf and grab these two. I left one behind. Prost!! mbroo5880i
Rye night for me while watch a Hallmark movie and then SNF. The Hallmark movie was actually not bad. It had Teri Hatcher and Marilu Henner in it. Even at 69, Marilu still brings it. Teri is, well, Teri. Reminded me of a movie with Nicholas Cage and Tea Leoni, the Family Man. Now Tea, I am sure she like rye too! She is a kid compared to Teri and Marilu. Anyway, Rossville Union Rye Savory Blend. I have enjoyed more than enough but not as much as I would like. I will look to grab a bottle or two of what remains at my local store.

I should've, (maybe), bought more, but I already have at least 6-7 bottles of KC Rye in the bunker. That being said, if they still have any left when I'm in the neighborhood , I'll pick up a couple more. The picks at this store have never disappointed me.
jeffrey r
Anyone else try the Balboa Rye from New Riff? Really nice, unique rye. 95/5 mashbill, but not MGP of course. Very fruity, but still with some spice and distinctive rye characteristics. Quite good IMHO.

I had a bar pour last KY trip and agree that it has a wonderful fruitiness and spice that results in a unique and tasty rye. That is exactly what I look for out of these young distilleries, do something unique, do it well, only bottle good tasting whiskey and don’t go apeshit with the SRP. This one checks all the boxes for me.

markandrex
I ran some errands this morning and stopped in to see a buddy at a liquor store in the area. He asked if I wanted this, yes I do.
TBoner
Earlier this week, I bought a bottle of KC Rye Cask Strength Barreled in 2009. I love rye but went several years without trying any new ones, focusing on low-to-mid-shelf stuff. I finally decided to snag one of these while I could still find it on a shelf. Perhaps it will get opened in the next couple of weeks.
n811
Roulette Rye from Proof & Wood. I'm pretty taken with this rye lately - typical MGP rye but lots of deep flavors going on.

Some of the reviews note interesting flavors like dark fruits and nuttiness which is something I typically don't note with the MGP 95/5. I usually get dill and grassy notes with a spicy finish. It takes a lot to take me off my normal ryes - Rossville Union, WT101, Pikesville. But, these notes are intriguing. When you say deep flavors, what are you noting? The last MGP rye I had was Dickel, and that had a lot of very bright, brash youth coming through. Roulette has a much fuller flavor - the dill is muted, and in its place are things like cherry, leather, and barrel char. Speculation of course, but I doubt this would be pegged as MGP 95/5 blind. Reminds me a bit of the older SAOS Rye but with the dill dialed back a touch. For $24 its a high-reward purchase in my book - give it a try if you find it. I like what Proof & Wood are releasing (only tried Roulette and Representative so far, but both are great).
