An odd phone call led to a six-pack of dead distilleries…

Reminds of the scene in Monty Python and The Holy Grail:  "Bring out your dead!"

Did you crack open that No Name No.3 yet? Thoughts?

Sorry, not yet… it's in a long queue.

What is this? I'm 100% in on whatever it is, regardless.

FABLE, a well-regarded independent SMSW bottler that literally just made it into the States— now that 70cL structures are permissible. The first US tasting event actually took place last night; I was lucky enough to score a few advance bottles off the truck.

I don't own a Scotch from Campbeltown. What's your top 3 from there that I n't really go need to add? Top 5 actually.

I'd start with the core range and go from there. You can't really go wrong with any of their releases and I know availability is quite limited.

Kilkerran 12

Longrow

Springbank 10

Springbank 12 CS

Glen Scotia 15

Each year the cask ratios they use changes (apart from the GS 15) so it's kinda hard to rank them as they may well be different from the previous. Glen Scotia tends to be readily available here and is one superbly easy sipping scotch.

I recently bought some Kilkerran 12 after reading a review and wow...I really enjoyed it.

Will keep my eyes open.

So year to year they taste a little different too? Am I understanding that correctly? If so, that's really cool.

Yep, for example the Longrow 18 2020 release was made up of 55% sherry casks, 25% bourbon casks and 20% rum casks, whilst the 2021 is 30% bourbon, 60% sherry and 10% chardonnay.

Often they seem to mostly varying ratios of bourbon/sherry cask.

I particularly enjoyed the 2019 Springbank 21 year old, which was 50/50 rum and port, absolutely incredible.

I always like to see what Marekv8 posts.  I'm not able to make relevant comments, but it's interesting.  At least I know who I'd ask about Scotch.

It all makes me wonder, what the heck was the bottle the store would not sell him (because they didn't know the price). 🤔

Thanks for the reminder— I need to give that bottle another shot. The store is a long walk (3.5 miles) from the hotel, but I’ll be back up in two weeks and give it a shot. It wasn’t that he didn’t know the price— he just didn’t want to sell it.

Another bottle scratched off my well-weathered list this year-- only four remaining of the original ten. Tracked it down during the summer and played my hand during their generous Black Friday sale (after running a shipping/customer service test in advance with an expendable bottle). Ten years on the shelf-- it had become a permanent fixture at the store.

From a great San Francisco shop specializing in independent bottlings. The change in legislation to allow 70cL bottles into the USA has really opened things up. Lugging the 10 pound wooden box through the airports is going to be a challenge.

I picked up and opened up some very good bottles today. All 3 are really good, BUT that Amrut is absolutely fantastic. Next the DT Glenrothes is very very good. So glad I picked these up.
