What Bourbon are you Drinking - Spring (2Q) 2021

Started with MM101 Old Fashioneds and moving to an SAOS 5 year pick. Had an outdoor gig in the heat today (I play drums) and was pretty well tuckered out so I'm soaking my bones. Is it weird that I'm having a "Sausage Party"‽ We just got loaded up and pulled out from the gig when a HUGE thunderstorm hit.

Out in the garage watching the heavy rain come down with an Oliva MB3 and a luscious Bakers. Every living creature is tucked away keeping dry, but the tree frogs seem very happy as they are croaking loudly from seemingly everywhere out there.

A Costco near me got the new Barton-sourced Kirkland Small-Batch  KSBW so I had to grab a bottle.  $18.99 for a liter.  Had to blind it with 1792 Small Batch, of course.  Definitely taste like cousins, I think it (92 proof)  drinks a little hotter than 1792 (93.7 proof); my wife thought the opposite.  The Kirkland comes on stronger on the palate but the 1792 is richer if that makes sense.  Maybe like WT101 is stronger on the palate but EW BIB is richer?

 

I am looking forward to the Kirkland versions of the bottled-in-bond and single-barrel Barton offerings, which are supposed to be released later.  I hope to score a bottle of the 1792 BIB and SiB offerings in the meantime so I can do a similar comparison.

Had a margarita with my Texmex dinner earlier tonight.

 Now I'm having a Little Book #3.  It's good but I'm already eyeing the KC store pick over there because I like it better.

We took a ride in my new car yesterday. Along the way, I stopped in at a liquor store that I don’t frequent very often any more. They had someone there doing a tasting (a rep from The Charleston Distilling Company?) of that stores private pick of Vessey’s Bourbon. It’s a 5 yr old, wheated recipe, at 94 proof, and I have to admit it tasted pretty good. I was interested but I balked when it came to the price. The cost was $39.99 for a 375 ml, and $59.99 for a 750 ml. Oh well…..

Picked up this Corner Creek 10 yr yesterday, because it’s been several years since I had it.  Immediately took me back to the profile of the EW1783 when it was 10 yr age stated. Sort of a mixture of malt, vegetal and sour wood notes.   Sounds worse than it is; however, if not something I would buy again or necessarily recommend.  The older 1783 had more caramel notes and slightly more heaviness to round it out, but the similarities are still striking.   It is certainly distinctive, for which I’ll acknowledge in a positive manner, as it is a 10 year old KSBW.  But, I’ll be moving on to something else soon, though...

Got a wagyu brisket flat going, so I needed a low proof for longevity. I realized how few 90 proofers that I have on hand. It's kind of sad but I found a WR TW pick that really isn't too bad at all. The only other is a BT. After that, we go 100 & above...

Sour wood, I'm sold!  Looks interesting, hope you can move on quickly.

Heehee.  The sour note is more of a wood note that brings little to no sugar influence.  It’s not fresh cut wood, it’s not tannic per se, maybe like firewood that has a bit too much rain after a year outside.

I got to try the Kirkland this week. Didn't do much for me, but the other guys seemed to like it pretty well.

Thanks for sharing!  I missed when this partnership was announced earlier in the year.   I wonder how the small batch compares to VOB?  I always found VOB to be hotter, thinner and less rich on the palate than Ridgemont and now 1792.  Now that I know about it, assuming I see it at my local Costco and the price is similar, I will grab a bottle or two.  I am more intrigued by the BIB and SiB.

Tonight's pours - Round #1 - Knob Creek12, 2 small pours.  I was going to write up eloquent tasting notes but who cares?  On this night, for me, this stuff was pretty good.  While I appreciated the smack on the palate on the first pour (those who have had it will understand), it took me a second pour to pick up on some of the nuances.  It reminds me of some of the stellar Binny's KC120 picks I have had over the years.  

 

Round #2 - MM101, 2 decent pours.  I know what I am getting here.  This stuff is awesome.  Actually, it is a great follow up to the KC.  Different styles yet the MM101 is not negatively impacted by the the palate smack of the KC12.  

 

It's Father's Day.  I had Beer Can Chicken, Roasted Pork Loin, spent time with my wife and my sons, and now enjoying the finest American Whiskey available.  Monday looms but for the rest of the night, I am grateful.

This is just a great post on many different levels.   I think it was the beer can chicken reference that sold me.  That stuff is awesome and brings back good memories for me!

Ha! I recall a Jimmy Russell quote from a while back when someone asked him why he didn't release a lot of older bourbon and his response along the lines of "If I wanted to taste last night's firewood after it got rained on I'd go pick up a stick and chew on it."
