What Bourbon Are You Drinking Spring 2023

Finishing a bottle of Jack Daniel's SiB BP, them moving on to a Jack Daniel's SiB BP store pick.  Both well into the 130-proof range.

Also had a little taste of my 60% Eagle Rare/40% Benchmark Full Proof blend; I'm going to a Buffalo Trace event tomorrow so I wanted to bring a few sample bottles of the blend for friends so of course I had to do a taste for quality control.

Place in water on the counter.  Should last until the leaves are gone OR start to shrivel up.

A hint for Summer.  Go to a garden store and get a couple mint plants, a clay pot about 8 inches high (the WIDER the better), and a small bag of "potting soil".  Plant the mint, set in a semi-sunny spot on a porch, deck, window sill (pick one) and water once a week (unless it gets about an inch of rain in a week).  WHEN you want some mint, cut (don't just break off) the longest piece making sure you get at least four regular sized leaves.  Make a julep.  CRUSHING the ice to tiny bits is optional.  Breaking the cubes up a bit is not mandatory but preferred.  So is the simple syrup.  Just before the first freeze, fill the pot top with shipping peanuts or bubble wrap and cover it with a white plastic kitchen bag.  In the Spring after the heavy snow/rain/cold is pretty much over, take off the bag and peanuts, lightly water the "dead" sticks every couple days.  In a couple weeks, make a julep.  Add some new potting soil if the plant looks weak a month or so later.  Our pot patch is about a dozen years old although we have repotted it several times as the plant spreads out over time.  Current pot is 15" tall, 12" in diameter at the top, and by mid-Summer the plant will fill the pot.  Pruning longer stalks OR cutting them off about 4 inches up may cause new shoots and sometimes branching.  Those tender shoots are really sweet.

Mint just pops up and grows on its' own with no help in my front and back yards.  I imagine somebody planted years ago.  There appear to be two different types.  The patch in front has flatter leaves, with more of a saw toothed edge.

Having some JW Dant.

After dinner pour of GBS selected Elijah Craig 15 Year Barrel Proof while sitting out on a (finally) warmish evening.

Attended a Women Who Whiskey event last night with my wife and a friend.  The speaker was Katy O'Donnell, National Brand Ambassador for Buffalo Trace.  My wife had the two specialty cocktails, my friend had the Weller flight (SR, FP, and 12) and I had individual pours of Elmer T Lee and Rock Hill Farms, both of which are unicorns around here.

Old school Baker’s SmB

I always loved Bakers.  Just not the Single Barrel version.  I had two meh bottles and at a higher price that was enough.

Enjoyed an after dinner pour of FRSiB. Now enjoying a solid "get to know you" pour of Still Austin Cask Strength.  My future DIL picked this up for me on a recent trip to Austin.  She sampled it and thought "I bet the Old Man" would like this. So, she bought me a bottle.

The label says our own @WhiskeyBlenderhelped blend this batch. As always, she helped her client hit their desired mark.

It is a standard version of their 2 year old Cask Strength. It drinks beyond its age. More complex than expected. I can detect hints of youth but the spice and sweet heat white pepper are in my wheelhouse. Very enjoyable. It is comparable to a 5 or 6 year old BS MGP. Thank you future DIL and Nancy for an different bourbon experience!

I have almost bought a bottle of Still Austin Cask Strength so many times..gotta pull the trigger next time.

Tonight I went back to my bottle of Kirkland (Barton/1792) Single Barrel.  Damn solid, especially for $30/liter!

Haha, what a strange turn around.  I passed on Kirkland Single Barrel and wish I would have picked up a bottle.

Is that you and your wife at the forefront of the picture on the left?  I ask because the other people in the picture look they have smushed out alien faces.  I mean its ok if that's the way the look. 😀  Is the lady on the left Katy?  If so, she looks boss.  If she told me to drink more bourbon, I would do so no questions asked.  😀

Nursing some PHC Barrel Finished, from 2011. Nice change of pace. Have been enjoying 4Roses small batch the last few evenings.

Yep, that's me and my wife.  And Katy is the one with the curly red hair.  Very dynamic personality.  She had a bit of a sore throat and the bar was loud, so it was quite an effort from her.  She actually came over and sat with us for a while and did a little mini lesson for my friend who is not as obsessed as me lol.  His favorite was the Weller 12.

First hit of the year on the freezer bottle of FRYL last night.  Will probably finish it off in a day or two - then it heads to the big blue recycle bin to be replaced with a bigger liter bottle.  Bigger is better, yes?   🤩

The liter size is the sweet spot for 4RYL 😎

Last week was crazy at work and this week has calmed down thankfully.  I thought I'd reward myself with a midweek "home happy hour" pour tonight while watching some baseball.  MGP sounded good so I reached for the 9 year local store private barrel pick of SOAS.  This one is interesting because, for me anyway, I find it a bit off profile.  This bottle is getting low and when it's gone it will be missed for its uniqueness.

Okay, PHC POH is sooo much better than the barrel-finished PCH I was nursing last night. I just opened my next to last bottle and forgot how good it was.

MM in the glass tonight. 😉 And regarding a couple of posts in another thread, I spotted Audrey Landers in Murder She Wrote while channel surfing.  📺  🏄

I've been reaching past this bottle for the past year and I don't know why.

She broke a lot hearts. I didn't realize she murdered anyone.

Although, I hear Mrs. Potts was smoking back in the day. 😀

Truth!

OF100 is a great pour,  regardless of the price.

I love that it's cheap!
