What Bourbon Are you Drinking Summer 2023?

Last night I had my first dance with batched ECBP that is less than 12 years old. This batch may be a tad younger, but it is just as good as the others.

Started off the holiday weekend with some FRSB.  Always a favorite.  Following up with some EW 1783.  Solid bourbon and always on hand here (my wife's regular bourbon).

I'm (finished) drinking these two (Woodford and Calumet). I gave them both a fair shot and I just don't like them. I'll keep them around for guests. 

I always have a hard time selling something to guests that I don't care for myself, it's like " I think  this stuff sucks but hey you might like it."

Interesting.  A lot of folks really like the Calumet. I didn't care for the double oaked. I sucked it up and drank, shared,  and mixed it and I only had a 375 ml bottle to kill.

Was searching the closet looking for a replacement to fill an opening on the 'active' shelf.   For whatever reason I pulled down a bottle of Bernheim Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey that had been pulled from the 'active' rotation over a year ago.    I had a pour neat and quickly remembered why it was shunted aside.    To my taste buddies it's only OK neat, and maybe not even that good over a cube.   It makes a passable Old Fashioned and a better-than-that Manhattan IMO though.    I'll leave it out.   It's over half full, or it was before today.   I'll try to limit it's future existence to the remainder of the Summer/Fall.

Ouch, I recall finding it "hot" for a 90 proof. I have enjoyed several straight wheat whiskeys in the past year, all higher proof.  All were much more enjoyable. 

 

How to blend it for enjoyment?

Not a great bourbon selection at our hotel in Aruba.  Well, "selection" isn't exactly the right term. JB white label. 

I ordered the Beam, went to the room, dumped it in the sink, and replaced it with MM. Problem solved!

That was one that sounded good on the label, 90 proof and has an age statement.  Pouring it and drinking it - not much to it, just blah.  Bourbon it is not.

Not sure what I'm drinking tonight, but I like it.  I discovered an unmarked 2-oz sample bottle among my samples tonight.  It has an earthy, vegetable-ish note reminding me of Frey Ranch or Driftless Glen.  Plus some more fruit/floral notes.  Nice complex nose that bounces around between different notes.  Light on the sweeter vanilla/caramel notes.

 

I'm pretty sure I poured the sample, no doubt thinking "No need to label this' I'll remember what it is."  OF course, now I have no recollection.  It tastes sort of familiar but I can't ID it.  Doesn't keep me from enjoying it, though.

 

Ok, I finished the mystery sample and moved on to one of the 15 bottles I picked up on my July road trip. Tonight it is a 118-proof Lucky Seven 6-year Proprietor single barrel.  I thought the sign at the store said it was a store pick but there's no tater sticker.   The nose is crazy, it jumps around to all kinds of notes including herbal, brown sugar, banana Laffy Taffy, sweet tea, barbecue sauce, light pipe tobacco, sweet acetone, I'm exhausted trying to pick out all the notes.  

 

Most of those come through on the palate but more muted, with nice viscosity and a sort of burnt sugar/creme brulee main note tying it all together.  And a decently long finish.

 

It's so hard having all you bourbon friends only online because I keep wanting to say, 'ooh, taste this.'

Putting the cap on a perfect Labor Day weekend with a Statesman,  followed by a 50/50 blend of Dad's Hat BIB and Dad' Hat finished in vermouth barrels.   The latter is spicy and sour and perfect with pizza.

KC9 listening to Tom Petty on the Internet.  He is my all time favorite.  We had a connection at a concert in '83. Fourth row at MSA.  I gave him a nod and he gave me a thumbs up and rock on smile.  No KC9 at that time. But, there was a heavy aroma in the arena.  I swear I didn't fart.  The story of that concert is absolutely crazy.  Tom Petty is a rock legend.

Continuing on with my road trip bottles tonight.  Last night was Lucky Seven 6-yr Proprietor.  Tonight id Lucky Seven The Workhorse Batch 2.  97 Proof, NAS. Classic bourbon notes on the nose of vanilla, caramel, and baking spice with a slight fruit cobbler presence and sometimes strawberries  and cream.  Some dusty notes.  Definite ethanol punch for its proof.

 

The palate is more muted, though it invites you back to keep sipping.  I am SBSing it with another Barton expression, Kirkland BIB. The latter is softer on the nose and palate but also noses and drinks less hot.  Either is a good low-ish proof sipper.

 

Probably move on to Holiday Toast tomorrow, the third Lucky Seven bottle from the road trip.

Reminds me of my own connection with Ozzy back in the 80's.

I was in front row and got splashed when he tossed buckets full of water at the crowd.

Not as heartwarming as your story but, as a huge Sabbath, (and Ozzy), fan, it's a fond memory.

There was a distinctive aroma in the air that night as well...

Never had the 15yr but got the 14yr because opinions seemed to favor that one. I like it but noticed that if I have something else 1st, it isn't as good, but like it plenty for a 1st pour of the day. As far as the WRDO goes, I find the LS picks much better than the shelfer...

I've had 2 different bars with the ingredients to add honey, lemon & bitters to the JB White & this makes it quite good. (my standard cocktail ingredients for guests trying bourbon, but not bourbonites) MM is just nice as is...

Saw Tom Petty in 78 and didn't have a clue who he was. Went to see LeRoux & TP had shared billing. I left there thinking, damn, that guy is good...

Spent the long weekend visiting Kids & Grandkids. My Son stepped up his game; we had Bulleit, RR SiB, MM & Larceny BP Jan 23 release.

Tonight VOB90... ahhhh!!!
