Finishing off the last of my Laphroaig Quarter Cask. I usually drink SMS in the colder months, but since it's nearly finished, I'm going to follow through with my new resolution to finish off more bottles before opening new ones.

A vatting (but not really) of Henry McKenna Single Barrel 10 years old Bonded and 1970's Heaven Hill 86 proof. They seem about the same age despite the earlier whiskey not being age-labelled. I dropped the McKenna to about 86 proof to match the older one. They are combined about 3:2 McKenna watered to the 70's HH.

Both are similar in taste to begin with, with the oily quality that characterises most HH bourbons up to about 12 years old (the EW Single Barrels are an exception).

This vatting gives off a rich, rye- and barrel-accented nose. The taste is deep, sweetish, all-bourbon. The finish is silky and long-lasting.

This is for the true fans of bourbon.

I found the Laphroaig Quarter Cask to be a lot sweeter than I expected. Still nice, though.

Tonight it's ER10 for me. Warming up here a bit, bourbon just seems right. My mint is starting to come up just in time for Derby day.

Last night I decided to put aside my wheaters, Pappy, Old Rid and the various Weller's and go with the ryed bourbons.

I tried OGD114, FRSingleB and WT101.

All neat and all very good. I was quite pleased and had a wonderful journey.

Last night was some Stone Russian Imperial Stout coupled with a pour of PVW20 and then ER with the second half of the bomber.

Tonight however, is opening night of the season for juleps in my house. Henry McKenna will probably be the pour for that. I have a liter of it and it's not a great rocks whiskey, so mint-ing it up won't really be a sin.

Well Getting ready for the Kentucky Derby and I finished off a bottle of Weller Antique 107. My Pour for the race needed to be something special so ... 07 GTS. Wonderful brown color smells good too. I love this stuff. How long until the 08 is out?

Poured some Elmer T Lee tonight....funny the effect of a single ice cube....it really brings the sweetness out. Straight I found it a little oaky and dry........the ice cube change the character quite a bit...smooth and sweet.

Last night I had some CC12, Eagle Rare SB 10/90, Evan Williams Single Barrel 1995. My sister was here but she was a piker so I just ended up going to bed!

Sitting in my 25th floor hotel room, overlooking the Chao Phraya river in downtown Bangkok, I am sipping on a delicious Wild Turkey 12 year old that I scored for $36 in the duty free at LAX. Tasty with more wood than I remember from previous samplings, I find this to be an exceptionally smooth version of the WT flavor profile. I think I will have one more and then retire for the evening. Cheers.

I started with a mingling of two February 1, 2008 Jack Daniels Single Barrel bottlings (from Ricks 15 and 19). Add dash of soft water. The water brings out the inherent quality of the whiskey, perhaps it is 80 proof now (but much superior to Jack's regular 80 proof bottling).

Add two dashes Peychaud's bitters and a teaspoon brown sugar. Shake that thing, pour into my Woodford Reserve rocks glass.

Result: a round, lightly sweet delicious Old Fashioned. You need the right amount of sugar to get this to taste right but since a teaspoon of sugar only has 18 calories (I once read), I say go for it.

Ice is optional, but I don't need it.

I need to try an old fashioned. Usually I just like to pour and drink but someday I will put the time in to make an old fashioned right. I started this afternoon with a redbull and vodka(Smirnoff:skep:) X 2. Why mix the good stuff? I was wiped out after my workout and had some yard work to do so I needed the pick me up. Now I am drinking an EW 1783 neat but will switch to BT while grilling my steaks and smoking my stogie. Its about grillin time. OUT

Well we went to get the girls pictures as a mothers day gift for the grandma's today...Wow 40 minutes after our appointment they were ready so you can guess how well the 4 month old was!

When I got home I went out to clean the garage witch ended up being

(2) WT Old No. 8's on the rocks. The next door neighbors brother brought his Real Wild Turkey by, he shot yesterday. BIG BOY for sure he was really proud so I invited them over for a nice pour of some Tribute! Both were very impressed!

Oatmeal Stout with dinner and well not sure what's next! I'll let you know!

Bangkok....I don't envy you Rob. I did my share of overseas travel for about 10 years and finally had enough. I had just returned from Phnom Pehn (a very long 3 weeks for sure) and my boss wanted me to turn around and go to Riyadh. I looked it him in the eye and told him "no". Shortly after that I changed jobs, got my kids into little league and settled down.
