Which Bottle Have You Laid To Rest?

A few nights ago, I finished off my bottle of "Hedonism", by Compass Box, one of the new wave of small batch Scotch blenders.

Hedonism, if you don't already know, is 100% Grain Scotch Whisky, distilled in a Coffey still from Maize and the occasional Wheat. There are only a dozen or so Grain Scotch distilleries still in operation in all of Scotland (as opposed to the 100 or so Malt Scotch distilleries currently in operation). Grain scotch, like the Grain spirits in Irish Whiskey, are usually blended with the malts to add lightness and sweetness.

In Hedonism, the blend is a vatting of spirits from about a half dozen distilleries. The vast majority of the spirits in the vatting had already been aged for more than 20 years.

I think it was pretty gutsy of Compass Box to do such a product, as Grain Scotch Whisky doesn't really get noticed amongst the plethora of Malt Scotches out there. The flavor is quite distinct, with tasting notes of Vanilla Cream and treacle Toffee, with a touch of clove and allspice.

Wonderful stuff. I had to cross state lines to get it. I will definitely have to do so again!

Killed an Islay Mist 8 tonight. Got a backup earlier in the day. A few days ago I also finished off a Talisker 10. Love that one but the price just keeps going up. $70 good? maybe.

In the past couple weeks, a bottle of Macallan CS and Abelour A'Bunadh (forgot the batch number). Drank them side-by-side most of their lives, but could never decide which I preferred.

last night killed off the last of my Black Bottles. Too bad because I probably won't have another for a few years. Can't get it in Canada and when I go to the US I tend to load up on the higher margin whiskys like Laga 16 at $50 in NYC vs paying the $110 they ask for at the LCBO. It's a shame not to have access to this affordable gem.

Caol Ila 12, a Christmas gift that I shared with some friends. This was the first peated Scotch that most of them had tried, and I think it won a few converts! Sufficeth to say, it lived a well purposed life.

Glenmorangie 10 gave up it's last pour last night. I'm not sure I'll rush out to replace it. I have always enjoyed it, but I haven't been too fond of it lately, for some reason.

The Macallan 12 gave up it's last pour last night. Since I still have a Cask Strength, I think I may wait a bit on replacing this one, or may pick up something different to replace it.

Ardmore Traditional Cask gave up it's last pour. Thankfully, I have two more socked away.

Took the last half of a bottle of Balvenie 15 Single Barrel to a little get-together the other night. People flocked to this one and it bit the dust within an hour. I'm still not sure if I liked it that much more than the Doublewood, which I have slotted to be my next scotch purchase.

For me, it's TotalWine, mostly. Tops, SunDevil, and Sportsmen's have good selections, but higher, retail level prices. Others you know of?

Well, I just finished the last of my Lagavulin 16 that I've been nursing along for the past couple of months. It's not that it's so terribly expensive that I can't replace it, it's just that I can get two or three bottles of decent Bourbon for the price of one Lagavulin.

Oh well... I guess I'll have to pony up and get another. I can't be without my favorite Scotch... even if I do sip it sparingly. :grin:

Liquidated (you like the symbolism? ) a bottle of Bookers that had been open for around 2 years. Quite a good drop from start to finish for a Beam product.

Last night was a bottle of Paddy's Irish whisky consumed by a few friends.... not a bad little pour for the $$. Easy to enjoy.
