What Bourbon Are You Drinking, Fall 2009

I've got a pretty substantial collection of bourbon now (over 70 different bottlings of various brands excluding repeats) but have been seeking out something new lately and can't figure out what to get next. For some reason, I've always passed over Noah's Mill, Rowan's Creek, Black Maple Hill, Rock Hill Farms, Hancock's Reserve and Jefferson's Reserve. Are there a few "must haves" in amongst this group, all of which are readily available to me here in Chicagoland?

Rock Hill Farms..................Many speak highly of Black Maple Hill bottlings...but Ive never had any.

I was leaning towards the Rock Hill Farms and recently found it on sale for $40 (normally $45) but also saw the Black Maple Hill and Hancock's Reserve at the same price and couldn't decide which one to get, so I left empty handed. (The Hancock's was marked down from $50 to $40!) My problem with pulling the trigger on any one of these is that I know little about them--they seem to have flown under my radar for some reason--and I can buy something really outstanding like WT Kentucky Spirit, Blanton's or Pappy 15 for not much more. I guess what I'm asking is, are these in the same league as those I just mentioned?

RHF is a pretty good buy @ $40 . I've only had one BMH (courtesy of The Boozer) and it was good too. I still think the Rowan's Creek or the Willet Pot Still (which it strongly resembled) are better buys for the money.

Had a little OGD BIB a bit ago, now having a nice pour of OWA. I think I'm making my Turkey jealous here lately.... ;)

Haven't been doing much drinking recently but made up for it tonight (f***ing Tigers...)

1) AAA 10 y/o

2) 4R Single Barrel Curtis/Hightower ed.

3) Heaven Hill BiB 6 y/o (white label)

Give the bottle a light shake before each pour and it will be evenly distributed with each pour: no stripping of flavor!!!

I spin the bottle around a couple of times of the same reason Timothy.

I had Overholt distilled at Michters, Rittenhouse 10, Handy 2008 and JDSS yesterday. I liked all 3 ryes more or less and they struck me as very similar stile wise. All were very spicy, youngish and pungent. I had a similar Overholt bottle about a year ago and it started of very light but the flavours grow a lot by the oxidation and the second half was very good. This bottle started of very pungent and it was almost slightly hash. It will be very interesting to see what the oxidation will do this time.

I liked Handy best out of the 3 ryes this evening.

Picked up a couple mini's of OGD 86...my first time having this. I'm drinking it out of a plastic cup so it's kinda hard to tell on this stuff...not too bad but not the typical pour that I'm used to.

Rock Hill Farms is the same mashbill at 100 proof. Good whiskey, but hardly a bargain @ $54.98 state minimum here. I think the AAA 10* & Elmer T. Lee are 90 proof, but are more affordable.

Back on the 4RsmBatch celebrating all the ex-Indians in the playoffs and the Edwards boot!

I really like this stuff alot. Props to Scott for choking one down in my honor today when he was hanging out with AL. I totally spaced showng up and saying hi but thanks Scott for taking care of it for the NEOH uhhh .... crew?

George T. Stagg hit Wichita (at least one store, anyway) for 47.99! I told one of my clerks at work, and he had to show me up by going to buy a bottle before I could get down there (thankfully they are holding one for me). He was nice enough to give me a 50ML sample bottle- this stuff is incredible!

I had lot b before dinner and uncut HH 15 years bottled by Cadenheads after. Both tasted pretty good. The trick with lot b seem be to take it before anything else on an evening to enjoy it fully.

Finally getting around to pouring my ceramic decanters into wine bottles -- thought I would sample along the way:

1969 Old Crow 4?/86 (green rook chess piece)

1980 Wild Turkey 8/101 (turkey decanter)

1968 Old Taylor 6/86 (castle decanter)

The Turkey is the turkey of this group -- I like the rye kick, but it's a little thin compared to the 60's ND samples. (Very happy to find the same Taylor butterscotch that was in my last decanter of that era!)

Had some Makers Mark in a bar with a nice cigar, after some ER10/90 from '04 at the office. When I finally get home going to work on 08 Stagg and sit outside during the first snow of the year.

Awesome examples of "vintage" bourbon. I've had each of those bourbons and they are wonderful pours.

Big drinking day yesterday. I did have lot B, ORVW 10/ 107, VWFRR I, Overholt bottled 1981 and a couple of Irish coffees made with WT 8. The family reserve rye seemed to fit my mode best this time. A big pity that it was the last out of the bottle.
