Shame on you for passing on the PVW, but saving for the PHC Wheater is worthy cause. Both are excellent.

Fortunately I have some PVWs in the bunker and old habits die hard when your used to paying less than $50 for it. Of course why then am I willing to pay $80 for the PHC which even though cask strength is 5 years younger  ? Because you all helped turn me into a bourbon geek  .

I was just teasing you about the shame for not buying the PVW15. It is hard to find in MI. It is on my purchase on sight list, although I admit I have passed on a bottle at $100.

I'm pleased to know that I helped just a little in making a bourbon snob. You will not regret the PHC 10.

Spotted a OFBB high on a shelf in an upscale grocery last nite. Flagged down a clerk to get the bottle, saw it was a 2009 and remembered the negative reports on that bottling. That one got left.

They also had several bottles of EC18, barrelled in 2/1992. Despite the good reports, I already have 3 or 4 of these so I passed as well.

That has been the worst bottling of OFBB that I've tried. Followed closely by 2010. Anything after 2008 is a no go for me, from here on out.

Didn't have a choice in passing this one up today.

After buying a couple of bottles I was talking to the store owner about various things bourbon when he mentioned a bottle he found in his grandfather's basement a while back. Then he pointed up to the top shelf next to the check-out counter where there was an I.W. Harper (with a lot of dust on it) and told me it wasn't for sale. He let me take a look at it and I saw that the tax stamp on it said 1951.

I asked if he was sure it wasn't for sale, and being a good salesman, he told me I should ask him everytime I stopped in. Something along the line of it's not for sale now, but you never know about later. Probably for the best since I haven't got a clue what I'd offer him for it.

The pictures aren't very good. Between my lack of skill and the quality of my cell phone, didn't stand much of a chance.

Gary

That's a bottle for which I would pay a premium but don't have a clue as to where I would draw the line. Think I would find out about his hobbies then buy something he would accept in trade.

Passed on a Lot B. It's hard to pull trigger at 55+ when PVW 15 is 60, and Weller 12 is 20 + tax

Passed on a KCSBR @ $31 sale price. While I really like that price, I was on the search for EWSB2000. One of my favorite things about Beam products is they are very available pretty much everywhere. The EWSB2000 are not always going to be around though.

  • 2 weeks later...

I passed up a lot. I came home with Stagg, VW 15, and Ancient Age 10 year. I passed up: the entire BTAC collection, some from a couple of years ago, Hirch 16 gold foil, Beam Distiller's Masterpiece 20 (never heard of this one before), VW Rye, VW 10, Lot B, VW 20, Michters SB 10 . . . the list goes on. I could have dropped some serious $$ but went with a couple of hard to find favorites and AA10, which I have never had.

How'd you like the price on that 20 year old Beam Distiller's Masterpiece?

Wow Jeff I didn't realize Des Moines had such great bourbons. I've not come across any of those in my short time looking in Omaha.

While on travel, I passed on the $90 BTAC and the $120 PVW 20. The entertaining thing was that the BTAC had a couple of bottles from prior years' releases, so I suspect next time I'm back that way I'll have a chance to pick up the same bottles.

On the way to the beach this morning I picked up a 1997 Evan Williams Single Barrel, but left behind about a dozen bottles of the 1998.

I also left behind a 1995 Jim Beam, 200 years commemorative decanter at $30.

Any thoughts? Good choice? Bad choice? Should I consider going back to pick one or both up?

Joe and Andy:

The Distiller's Masterpiece was $250! I had never even heard of it till i did some searching on here. The Hirsch was $225, I believe.

99% of Iowa liquor stores only have what is on the state list and perhaps a few others. About the only gems that are even possible to find at these are an older bottle of EWSB. There are a few, however, that special order a lot of whiskey.

I passed on several bottles of 2010 GTS, an 04 WTKS dark smooth top, and a WTKS dark smooth top with no information. :skep: This bottle had no info at all on the neck tag. Strange. Joe

Passed on some dusty Dant BIB's. I didn't even check the DSP or bottle year because I'm really not that sure of what is what when it comes to Dant, and it's only gotten so-so reviews that I have read. I've had one new-ish bottle of Dant BIB and was underwhelmed.

Also passed (for now) on some late-era ND OGD 86's. I bought a total of 5 of them, and that's all I could muster for now.

Also passed on some very dusty Canadians: CC, Windsor, Vo... I do like a Canadian now and again, but I already had six bottles on the counter.

Edit:

Also, a few days ago passed on a Hirsch 16 year with the yellow foil top. 1st one I've ever seen. But it was $260. Sorry, can't do it.

Passed on several bottles of Laphroaig 15. I like scotch but just much prefer bourbon. I may go back and get 1 and give it a shot to see what I think since its disc.
