I finally feel well enough to report in from my Saturday night BBQ and Bourbon session with Scott (Hightower) and respective families:

Makers Mark Mint Julep

Got a few bottles of this, with one in the freezer, excellent over crushed ice on a hot day :)

Yet to open mine (18y) - am looking forward to doing so soon.

My bottle is baby Saz. Gee it's nice though, can only imagine how good the 18 is.

I can get my hands on William LaRue Weller, Van Winkle Family Reserve, Old Rip Van Winkle and Cabin Still. I wouldn't say they are readily available, ie in most liquor stores.

But I am on the West Coast. May be the guys on the East coast might have better availability.

I can get Bernheim which although is not a wheater - is one of my fav pours.

None of those are readily available on the East Cost, but can be found in 1 or 2 specialty stores. You'll also pay anywhere from 3-10 times the US prices, depending on the store.:hot:

As for Bernheim, it's the only wheat whiskey made in the US.... so I guess you could call it the only true wheater :slappin:

Bernheim is no longer the only wheat whiskey made in the US, Dryfly makes it too.

Last night it was some McKenna 40% that I have had a vanilla bean sitting in since August. Didn't make it much better

THen I had some WT RR101. Will be sorry when this is all gone!

I might need to ramp it up a bit, I don't want to be the light weight Aussie in Kentucky!

Started tonight with a few mixed drinks - Jim Beam Honey and Ginger Beer. Followed up with some Devils Cut neat, and finished the night with some regular Canadian Club on ice.

Started with a WT RB, followed by a EC12 and now enjoying a '76 Kentucky Tavern 86 proof.

Haven't had a whiskey all weekend, just been beer here.

Might have to enjoy a glass tomorrow after Hawthorn's win.

Been too hot and too busy here over the long weekend. Might have a mint julep tonight for the hell of it...

Enjoying some Four Roses Yellow Label. Lots of sweet fruity notes coming out tonight, but I can't put my finger on what fruit... oh well, moving onto some Devils Cut shortly.

  • 3 weeks later...

After passing up several special occasions over the years, I finally cracked my bottle of SB.com barrel purchase non-chill filtered Pappy 23 for my Dad's 72nd birthday. We followed it up with some Devils Cut (keeping the strong wood and tanin theme) and rounded it out with a significant amount of Canadian Club 12yo.
