Josh
I'm with Ebo.If I see some on a shelf, which I probably will at some point, I'll pick up a couple bottles of Old Rip 107. Otherwise, nuts to this. I got better things to do than devote time and money toward a wild goose chase.
smokinjoe
I have managed to score all of the PVW in Djibouti! :woohoo: I PM'd Kickert in Swaziland, and he made the camel trip up to the Horn to pick up for me all 7 bottles that were shipped there. White Dog
One thing to remember is that most (all?) of the VW products are now coming from BT stock. I've been to BT about seven or eight times in the last five years, and only once have they been distilling the wheated mashbill when I was there. (If they were distilling at all.) It seems like a logical conclusion to me that they don't run the wheated mashbill near as often as their two rye mashbills. Maybe someone can help shed a little light on this. :skep: So you have one mashbill now accounting for: BTAC WLW, Weller 12, OWA, Weller SR, ORVW 10/90, ORVW 10/107, Lot B, Pappy 15, and maybe Pappy 20 and Pappy 23 as well. Add to that the possibility of not enough available warehouse space, and......... voila'. Limited availabilty! I know some of this is conjecture on my part, but I don't think I'm too far off in my rationale here. Cheers and happy wheaters to all! Joe I'm probably wrong, but it seems I never hear enough praise for Julian the Master Blender. Regardless of what percentage Bernheim/Medley/BT/S-W make up the bottlings(And don't get me wrong, I'd kill to know that information), it seems to me that his fans should really appreciate how he achieves his end products, for they come from many parts. Say what you want about procuring Van Winkle products, but I mostly dig the guy's palate. And yes, Joe, I too want them to run more wheated mashbill, just as I want LDI to run more Rye.

Of course who knows if it still is, but if so it may account for why it is better than the Pappy 15, and as white dog stated they very well could be blends of mutliple distillate. Anyone, other one of the Van Winkle's, who claims to know for sure shouldn't waste our time. I agree with everyone else this has reached insane levels and I think the retailers are pretty fed up. I went into a store for something else and asked just to see the reaction, I was told local state liquor owners are actually petitioning the control commission to not even bother with the products any longer. Of course he could have been blowing smoke, but seemed pretty intent; however I don't think that would stop people from asking.

BradleyC
I notice the same sentiment. They individually get so few bottles, the hassle generated along with the number of disappointed customers isn't worth what little profit they can make. If they get 12 bottles or less of whatever, its almost not worth fooling with. They make money with volume. The VW release is nothing more than a big distraction for them at this point and I can't blame them. Especially when you factor in the nonsense that starts at the distributor level such as tying VW/BTAC allocations to BT and ER barrel purchases. For everyone who bothers them about VW and is a disappointed customer, a hassle, there are customers who buy product year round to establish a good relationship with that retailer. Also, buying other product at the time of the VW. I drive down to Party Source and Cork n Bottle every 4-6 weeks or so for this very reason, and I'm not the only one. I went to CnB Sat for VW and also bought some ETL.

Hardly enough profit there to justify the relative hassle twice a year.
Josh
Might I suggest a new slogan for Julian? The Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery:"Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes...The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!" I'm starting to not blame them.
p_elliott
You all are now saying now that you didn't get it that it's not worth the trouble. You think maybe you should have thought of that 140 post ago. It's not in Iowa if I'm some where and it's on the shelf so be it otherwise I'm not killing myself or friends for it. And I'm kinda tired of reading about reading of people who are.

jcg9779
I'm curious - when everyone talks about the shortage of VWproducts, are you referring to PVW bottles only or are you seeing a lack of Old Rip as well? Do people snatch thoseup ("Guess I'll "settle" for this...") like the PVWs?In Atlanta I see the PVW stuff fly off the shelves. The ORVW stuff will go quickly, but generally lasts up to a couple of weeks. Of course, VW products are expensive in Georgia and the ORVW 10/90 is $45 and the ORVW 10/107 is $50. That could explain why they sit a little longer than in other parts of the country.

wripvanwrinkle
I would like to see these ultra exclusive releases be soley distributed through a single on-line retailer (like TPS.) In doing so, the product would become much more evenly distributed. If you really want to reach your fan base, this is the strategy that you would employ. Now, if you wanted to use this offering as bait for the sale of vodka products and single barrels...then that is a different strategy that has little to do with even market driven distribution...
