What Bourbon Are You Enjoying, Winter 2011/2012

I've been all over the board tonight. Started with WTRB, then '09 OFBB ( I have tried the '08,'09, and the '11 and they are all spicey rye goodness. They all seem to get sporadic love here, but I think they're great.)..finishing up with some FC.

Settling down with a small pour of BTEC "Fire Pot Barrel Aged". This bourbon tap dances across your tongue like Pop Rocks. Very spirity. I'm guessing from the fire dried barrels, picking up the tannins. You definitely know it's there. Interestingly though, there is no burn when you swallow this whiskey. A terrific barrel influenced finish. This continues to be one of my favorite BTEC releases.

Polished off a bottle of OFS. While it won't knock your socks off, I think OF is a good representative bourbon. I may not run out to grab another right away, but it was a good bottle.

Good to hear about the OFS - I have a bottle waiting in the wings to replace my HH BiB when it's gone.

Had a BTEC 1991 and 2010 Saz 18 tonight. The BTEC 1991 was malty and amazingly free of any wood in taste. Its finish was full of nice, woody walnut, however, which was very pleasant.

The Saz 18 was delicious, but a lot more piney than I remembered. I think it's just behind the Vintage 21 in ryes I've tried.

Now it's the old faithful KCSB for video games with the wife. Hopefully I'll at least win one, which might not happen, considering she was starting point guard all through high school...

I've only had RB and KS side-by-side, and WT101 another time. That's my sum total of WT exposure. I liked the RB best, but it's such a comfort bourbon that I wonder if it was just my mood at the time, that RB might be an all occasion dram. What's your verdict?

She's a beer girl. I'm trying to get her interested in a Bell's Batch 9000 or 2009 Victory Old Horizontal, or 2008 Dogfish Head Olde School Barleywine, anything high proof to even the odds!

Hah, well... this is the third and last bottle I have of the 15. The other two are long gone. And I only have one bottle of the 20. I still can't believe I paid $100 for a bottle of bourbon. I mean, obviously, I want to open it. I just feel like I should wait for a good reason to. Yeah, I'm weird like that!

I was just thinking about the 91 earlier today, it was a really unique taste that I've never come across in another bottle before, very delicious! Too bad those 375's just don't last that long.

Not just, enjoying...Really enjoying. And, it's not even a bourbon, but it belongs here. Bernheim Wheat Whiskey. It's been a while since my last bottle, but I'm now wondering why I've waited. The nose is simply Heavenly. Sweetish, with a wonderfully doughy overtone to it. That carries over at it glides over my palate. One of the most drinkable whiskies I've ever had. The doughiness and sweetness hangs on in the end. Really good all the way through, but the nose...the nose...is simply spectacular. This will become a more frequent stop on my regular rotation, for sure.

George Dickel No. 12, a particularly rich and full-tasting bottle, well-matured with no harsh "vitamin"-like flavor but a characteristic taste, hard to describe in words. Also, the mouthfeel is seamless and glycerine-smooth.

Best bottle I ever had of the brand. Maybe the batches are being put together with especial care these days.

I finally opened up the bottlings of 1789b OWA 8/107 #5 & #6 and they're incredible considering that they're $22 a bottle.

#5 has that thick viscious "Louisville" mouthcoating with tons of caramel on the nose. The pallet has caramel, oak, hints of vanilla, and finishes with some spice. This bottle proves to me that BT is still capable of producing "Louisville" like bourbon it's just that you search to find it!

#6 doesn't have the huge caramel nose that #5 has but it has a spicy vanilla bean note on it. The pallet isn't as mouthcoating as #5 either but it has more complexity as there is a good amount of vanilla, brown sugar, and spice on it. The finish on this one is long and spicy.

Two very different bourbons and the best bottlings of OWA that I've had since the days of Louisville OWA!

Here, we're going over to the rye side. I'm definitely digging the Woodford Aged Cask Rye over the New Cask. Color, not withstanding.
