Wryguy
This weekend I will obtain two of the most unique and significant whiskies to this point in my journey. Today an impeccably packaged box containing the Heaven Hill Select Stock cognac finished wheat recipe bourbon arrived on my doorstep. I'm on my way toward opening and enjoying this whiskey, and toasting my journey tomorrow that will result in even more delicious bourbon.Look forward to hearing the tale! If it's more impressive than this HHSS then I really want to hear about it. I was going to try to get a VBT up, but this stuff is too irresistible to grab anything else. Old Dusty
My goal is to wait a month... Hopefully I find the willpower to make that happen! But do yourself a favor and compare to Lot B or ORVW 10/107. Those are much closer corollaries than a 15/107 since your oldest component is 12 yrs and highest proof is 107. Your blends will max proof around 99 and age at 9/10. Just sayin'. It's your ball game though do as you wish.

mbroo5880i
OBSV doesn't get its due since it is the recipe for the standard single barrel. However, there is a big difference between barrel strength and 100 proof. Also, there is a big difference between a private selection and the standard single barrel, especially when it was selected by Jim Rutledge. Enjoy! MyOldKyDram
All of that plus the fact that this OBSV is 17+ years old!
Auracom
Echoing everyone else - hell of a bottle Joe and I'm sure it will be enjoyed. Had a successful run tonight to grab a store-selected EC12 and ran into the first ETL I've seen in a while.

How do you tell what yeast type it is? I dont remember if it said 'private selection' on the neck, but it was a gold label like that and barrel proof single barrel, and was about $55, and was the only one on the shelf, next to the regular single barrel. If someone in Louisville wants it, PM me for the location. But still, Id like to know, in the future, how to tell what Im looking at with these, particularly which of the 10 it is.

What I wouldn't give to have a 17 year old Jim Rutledge Selected bottle. Very nice and I hope you enjoy it! Anyone know if these are still available at the gift shop? Might be worth a weekend visit with some friends.

All you need to know is right here Doug. The 17 Year bottle that smknjoe has is extra extra special. Jim Rutledge explained that he found a particular batch of barrels (that were 17 years old at that time) that were the best single barrels of bourbon he had ever sampled. They used some of this 17 year in the 2012 FRLESmB and 18 year in the 2013 FRLESmB. But Jim also had some of this 17 year bourbon sold as single barrel bottles in the gift shop before the well deserved hype of 2012 FRLESmB reached critical mass. That's cool that someone gave smknjoe such a wonderful gift. What's better than bourbon that Jim Rutledge says is the best he's ever had straight from the barrel?

Several retailers across the country also have similar Private Selection offerings (what the Fox was referring to.) Unfortunately, I don't know of any retailers in Texas that offer Four Roses Private Selections. And in typical SB fashion, someone helped me acquire one. SBers tend to be friendly and glad to help each other. The favor will be returned of course.

hn4bourbon
Decided to walk into a store to pick up a few bottles today. Got an ETL, beam 12 year after hearing good things from this board, an EC12 for trying out the vatting idea with ECBP from a board member here, and finally a VOB86 6yr. I walked to the counter with a VOB with just a 6 at first...i'm glad I reminded myself to double check. They look REALLY deceiving just having the 6 instead of the six year. Luckily, they still had a couple of the 6 year versions pushed to the back of the shelf.
bin31z
Went back to that dangerous looking liqour store and picked up 2 more 500ml Old Taylor 6 year 86 proof from 1982 and a liter bottle of 80 proof (NAS, no upc, no warning) Old Taylor from 1980. I compared the 86 proof old taylor to OGD 1980 NAS and preferred the OT by ALOT. Both have that butterscotch note but where the OGD is like light butter, the OT is burnt caramelized butterscotch with citrusy pineapple mixed in. Then I made a friend at another crappy local liquor store by chatting him up about 49ers and found out he gets pappy shipment every week and got the hook up on 1 bottle a week since I walked in and bought 250 dollars worth of liqour (Glenmorangie ealanta and Yamazaki 18) and promised him continuing business in return. It is a good day....

bin31z
He might be blowing smoke but we will see next Tuesday...he didn't seem like he would just lie to me and have me come back next week and blow up at him in the store for telling me a tall tale...My thinking was maybe his distributor got it all but was rationing his allocation? Again, we will see...No one gets a Pappy shipment every week. Once a year. Sorry.
bin31z
Also...the 3 cases of lot B that I picked up were dated 9/5/13 but the shipping label is dated 12/18/13... which isn't the widely accepted date that the stuff is release from the distiller. Anyways, I'm just saying that since you don't work for Buffalo Trace or Julian, maybe you don't know everything about the distribution system. No one gets a Pappy shipment every week. Once a year. Sorry. Edited January 18, 2014 by bin31z
