Guest
I firmly believe that your body will tell you what your limit is, ignore it at your own peril. I have found through practice that I can happily consume 2-3 bottles a month, beyond that I begin to feel the ill effects mentioned by bin31z, its subtle at first but they do compound. I also have found using liver function supplements such as milk.thistle greatly improve my well being. Max Power
I'm probably in the 1/2 to 2/3 of a bottle per week group. That would give me roughly 18 years before I run out.
p_elliott
I drink quite a bit of wine, along with various spirits including scotch, cognac, sipping rum, gin, Spanish Brandy, and Calvados, so I estimate my Bourbon consumption to be less than one bottle per month.I recently took stock of my Bourbon collection and found 40+ unopened bottles of RR101, WLW, McKenna BIB, ETL private barrel selection, Pappy 15, Eagle Rare 17, Jefferson 18, EH Taylor, Weller 12, plus a few stragglers along with the 11 opened bottles I have....and I'm wondering why I'm so interested in Bourbon since I have enough to last for more than 4 years at current consumption rates. :confused:I'm thinking that more than a few of you rabid Bourbon suckers must be going though 2-3 bottles a month or more....so fess up...what's yer Bourbon consumption rate? :cool:Here is another thread that has been beat to death. Just people lying bout how much they drink to each other to make themselves feel better.
Yeti
It is a funny question, given societal norms and expectations and whatnot. I honestly don't think that most people drink as much as I do, but I always assume they drink more than they say. My wife administers the state bar exam and part of that is interviewing applicants about different vices and responsibilities. Every person, when asked when last they consumed alcohol, had "a beer or two, a few weeks ago, while watching (insert sport) at a friend's house". It's absolutely hilarious. 2 beers, 2 weeks ago, because of sports, at someone else's home. I want to sneak in to one of the interviews with the board and give them an honest answer to reset the expectations. "Well, last consumed? Put some Patron XO Café in my coffee on the way over here. But that's just to rev up the ol' engine, you know? Last night my buddy and I split a six pack of Sierra Nevada Torpedos while we were grilling, then had some manhattans with that new Elijah Craig Barrel Proof bourbon for dinner. You seen that stuff? Hot damn, 137 proof! Can you believe that? After that we realized WVU was playing basketball on ESPN 2, my wife went to school there, so we started going through different Four Roses yeast strains while we watched the game. There's 5 variations, but we had to double check some of them, haha. Once the game was over everyone took off and the wife went to bed to sleep off the red wine, it hits her pretty hard. Anyway, I decided it was time to slow down, so I poured some Lagavulin 16 and watched the post game wrap up. Called it early because I knew I had this interview today. How about you guys?" I'm not sure why anyone would really judge anyone on how much they drink on a board dedicated to drinking. It's not like we're soccer mom's talking behind eachother's backs. Booze is what brought us all here. We all drink more than the average person. Whiskey/tequila/scotch/whatever is something that we enjoy. So long as we're not driving or being destructive with it, why should anyone judge what we drink. Unless you drink it with ice...then you're an ass. Yeti
I'm not sure why anyone would really judge anyone on how much they drink on a board dedicated to drinking.I think it's more complicated than that. Obviously there are a lot of factors at play, but there are prejudices and stigmas that don't cease the moment you log onto a website. Playing Devil's advocate all the way down will lead to an undesirable destination, so I'll stop now.I do agree personally with all of your sentiments. Maybe not the ice one
bin31z
Here is another thread that has been beat to death. Just people lying bout how much they drink to each other to make themselves feel better.I don't think this person stated that they drink alot...he clearly said his consumption is less than a bottle a month. He just has alot of open bottles. I think that's a dilemma faced by alot of people on this forum. I have alot of open bottles (OWA, EC12, ECBP, lot b, AE, ETL, FRSB, FRLE SB, EWSB, OGD, OT, evan williams black label, yamazaki 12, macallan 12, glenrothes 21, highland park 12, aberlour a'bunah, JW black, JW green, bowmore devil cask, Laphroaig cardeias, arbeg 10, arbeg uigedael, along with various rums and tequilas). I want to try everything but obviously can't drink enough to keep up with opening bottles. So I don't think it is fair for you to come out and bash on someone for bragging when they really aren't. In the end, maybe I just need to be more judgmental...at least we've learned that much.
Yeti
So I don't think it is fair for you to come out and bash on someone for bragging when they really aren't.This isn't what happened. Paul just said that these conversations immediately BECOME people misrepresenting themselves. He didn't attack the OP in any way other than to say "we've been down this road before." And everyone misrepresents themselves when self-reporting regarding alcohol consumption. Perhaps there is less variation on a connoisseur forum like this than in the general population, but there is still discrepancy from reality. White Dog
Okay, here's the truth. About 3 bottles a week. And I feel fine, but as always, YMMV.
squire
I've come to the conclusion that drinking whisky over ice promotes moderation . . . yeah, that's my story.

I can't tell you how many depositions I've attended in car accident cases where someone had been drinking beforehand. Amazingly, everyone had just 3 beers - over a few hours - before the collision. TunnelTiger
Didn't realize we were actually supposed to be 100% truthful and all so I suppose I should amend my earlier 1-2 bottle post to 2-3 duirng a normal 5 day work week. Short weeks will be 3-4.
dSculptor
It depends on if i pick up my guitar or not, I currently have 61 opened bottles that I like to come down and take a "tour " of them, (and another 12 of some unopened colectibles that I am starting to open.)with being about 3-4 small pours a night. At age 51 not exactly old but I deserve it.The trouble with all the open btls is that I try to equal them out , but after a while of doing this I become empty on a bunch all at once! It may take a few days, but I just go back to it until it's done. That way, I "create" more space, right?

AaronWF
I happened to catch a Ralfy review where he demonstrated a method for measuring consumption:Supplies (other than what you're drinking):An empty bottle (750ml to make things easy)2 glasses of the same shape and sizeEvery time you pour a drink, pour equal parts water into the other glass and dump it in the empty bottle. Write down somewhere the date that you started and see how long it takes to fill up the bottle with water.Or you can be like me and track your whiskey in an excel spreadsheet. I know exactly how many bottles I opened and killed last year. But I'm not telling!
