RWBadley
It is a funny question, given societal norms and expectations and whatnot. I honestly don't think that most people drink as much as I do, but I always assume they drink more than they say. My wife administers the state bar exam and part of that is interviewing applicants about different vices and responsibilities. Every person, when asked when last they consumed alcohol, had "a beer or two, a few weeks ago, while watching (insert sport) at a friend's house". It's absolutely hilarious. 2 beers, 2 weeks ago, because of sports, at someone else's home. I want to sneak in to one of the interviews with the board and give them an honest answer to reset the expectations. "Well, last consumed? Put some Patron XO Café in my coffee on the way over here. But that's just to rev up the ol' engine, you know? Last night my buddy and I split a six pack of Sierra Nevada Torpedos while we were grilling, then had some manhattans with that new Elijah Craig Barrel Proof bourbon for dinner. You seen that stuff? Hot damn, 137 proof! Can you believe that? After that we realized WVU was playing basketball on ESPN 2, my wife went to school there, so we started going through different Four Roses yeast strains while we watched the game. There's 5 variations, but we had to double check some of them, haha. Once the game was over everyone took off and the wife went to bed to sleep off the red wine, it hits her pretty hard. Anyway, I decided it was time to slow down, so I poured some Lagavulin 16 and watched the post game wrap up. Called it early because I knew I had this interview today. How about you guys?" Kyjd75
Well, here's the unfortunate truth for me. Had a bad flare-up of radiation cystitis this past week while in St. Croix. I am officially off all coffee and booze for a couple of months at least. And I had just found those bottles of Blanton's!

MTJ
Hey!!! there is no counting in Bourbon consumption. There is just the first and the last sip.Besides my wife helps so we have to cut that in half and just admit I enjoy a sip. Now bourbon buying is another story I rarely make it through a week without buying a bottle or

GaryT
Portwood nailed it - ABV is just as important. I'm trying to count calories, and 1 oz of some ECBP at 134 is 108 cal, where I could pour 1.5 oz of ER10 or ETL at 90 proof for the same calories. I have looked for an online alcohol calorie calculator but all I find are generic tables by alcohol type.
393foureyedfox
Calories = ounces x proof x.8 (for hard liquor)if youre not a math person, just figure an ounce of 100 proof whiskey is 80 calories and go up/down a bit by proofthis is a link I had found a while back for a study session regarding alcohol consumption and how your body uses it, what it affects, and what affects it.....http://www.uhs.uga.edu/documents/nutrition_alcohol.pdf Edited January 19, 2014 by 393foureyedfox

GaryT
What Doug said Being the geek I am, I made a table with proofs along the top, and quantity along the left (ranging from 1/2 oz to 2 oz), but used that exact same formula. At one point my wife was concerned because she thought that since beer was 5%, my whiskey at 50% was 10x more alcohol than a beer. I had to measure out an ounce and illustrate that a 12 oz beer has more alcohol than my 1 oz pour (and quite often my pours are a bit shy of an ounce). Nipped that in the bud
Tony Santana
One of my partners got a "bourbon of the month" gift for Christmas, and while in the break room this morning I asked him if he had received his January selection yet. His secretary was there as well. She asked him "Does that mean you drink a bottle a month?" as if that would be an incredible amount of consumption. I just kept my mouth shut at that point. mbroo5880i
I think my original estimate was about 1 liter per month in 2013. That still seems like a fairly accurate assessment. However, the beginning of this year might skew things a little for the coming year. I don't know if it is the really cold snowy weather or if I have just been really thirsty.
