What "Other American Whisky" are you drinking?

Pitchforked 6 cubic yard of compost (bin 3 into empty bin 4 then full bin 2 into bin 3 then full bin 1 into bin 2). THEN, since it is 95 or better (although I was working under some trees), I poured some Bernheim over an ice cube, let the cube melt, then sipped.

That sounds tasty minus the ice. Think I might put my nearly empty bottle in the fridge so I can kill it off tonight since my shelf of open bottles is over-flowing right now.

We had some Mellow Corn over the weekend which was purchased for no particular reason. Tried it neat and was surprised by the amount of heat, so much that the alcohol harshness completely covered up the subtleties of the corn whisky. Had to cleanse my palate with some Old Grand Dad.

I've been enjoying the standard Stranahan's. Very rich flavor and not too young-tasting for a 2-year-old.

A store near my work is having a moving sale, so I decided to pick up a Diamond Peak @ $59. I look forward to comparing them.

Picked up a store selection of Dickel 9 year today. Not a bad price at $36.99 ($9 less than the last bottle I purchased at Liquor Barn). Good mouthfeel, a little hot, the signature "vitamin" taste on the palate, albeit faint…overall very good. I'm definitely going back for more.

Cracked open my bottle of Michter's Unblended American Whiskey that I picked up some time ago. It sounded interesting while reading about it which is why I decided to buy it, but wasn't sure what to expect... This stuff is like candy... Heavy caramel/candied corn on the nose with little to no spice or earthiness that you get with a good bourbon... Very sweet in the mouth! Tastes like it smells, lots of caramel and candied corn. Some alcohol straight out of the bottle, but left to sit for a few minutes that fades and just gives a slight bite on the tongue. Not much complexity or depth, just a ton of sweetness.

Not bad for a change, but definitely not something I'll grab again for the price.

A small pour of GD12, haven't visited this in a while. Tasty in it's own way but it is making me wish I had started with a bourbon instead.

Corsair Triple Smoke.

I really need to try some of this and their quinoa. Guess a trip to butter run saloon is in order.

Just had my first drink of Gentleman Jack. Definitely don't like my whiskey with a banana note

GJ I think was actually my first american whiskey in my transition from scotch and irish to bourbon. I haven't had it in quite a while. The JDSB I really liked but I only had one or 2 bottles due to the price.

Quaffing some GD BS (2006 Selection) that I purchased on a whim (and on sale) about a year ago. Lots of corn aroma and flavor, though not much else on the nose. Spun sugar, pralines, mojito-mint and tobacco on the mid-palate, with all that sweetness fading to into a slightly astringent finish.

I'll go out on a limb and opine this is slightly reminiscent of a flabby, sweeter and less funky/quirky OGD114 purchased for nearly twice the price. It hard to consider that a winning formula but taken just as what it is, its OK for a Sunday afternoon. And it drives home the need to grab some more 114 for the bunker while I can still grab it at $21.

I had this at a tasting last week and was really impressed. I'll have to try a bottle, but I agree that the price probably relegates it to one-time-purchase status. Only the uniqueness gets it past that point for a single try. Who knows? I might change my mind after spending some time with it.

Several years ago I bought multiple bottles of Michter's Unblended American Whiskey after discovering a huge butterscotch note that I really enjoyed. Unfortunately, it disappeared for nearly 2 years and upon its return a year or so ago I noticed a decidedly different flavor. I still enjoy the bottle I have but not nearly as much as the bottles I initially purchased.

I really need to revisit the Michter's now that it's been a while since I opened the bottle and had my first pour.

A pour of GD12 after some bourbon and BBQ Pizza. A bit underwhelming after some good bourbons.

Sunday afternoon, 90+ degrees outside, Brewers vs. Nats on TV. Bernheim neat. After all, it is Summer.

Thanks to the thoughtful assistance of a fellow SB/GBSer I ways able to acquire a bottle of the Nebraska made Cut Spike single malt whisky (batch 3) that had been aged for 2 years. My expectations were as low as the proof (86 proof) but I do like to try things for myself!

It managed to live down to my expectations. The nose had an interesting character and I agree with SKU's review of an almost gin like strong herbal quality with maybe a touch of the always highly regarded GBS anise quality. But little of that made it to the palate. I didn't find it overly grainy. Young certainly and a bit of sweet grain but not raw (as SKU notes when he reviewed Batch 3) although I have not had the chance to try the generally positively regarded batch 1 .

I also tried it next to a bottle of Westland single malt (the standard unpeated bottling, not a special cask) along with a fellow GBS/SBer. I certainly preferred the Westland (although I think the peated and sherry finished standard Westlands are a bit better) and I would drink the Westland more regularly. The biggest problem both of these have is price. An awful lot of better drinking whisky (of all types) for the same cost or less.

I hope they are both successful and with time produce older expressions but I think the cost is going to be a significant limitation in the forseeable future.

Continued working on a GD9 I have recently purchased. I have come to really enjoy this bottle after dialing the proper amount of water.

Revisiting the Michter's American Whiskey this evening. I poured this round over a few ice cubes and let it sit for a bit... that tamed some of the sweetness I experienced with it last time and even though there isn't much heat or spice, this ain't bad and goes down REAL easy!
