I finished the last of my bottle of Rhetoric 20.  Damn if I don't dislike this more every time I try it.  I'm glad to see the bottle gone.

Most boring Dallas-Washington Monday Night Football game ever.  EVER!!

Hence, I'm downing copious amounts of Very Old Barton bonded "6" in an effort to (a) pique my interest or (b) go to bed.

Better hang on (and pour another), things just got 'real' interesting!

Almost done my bottle of 1792 and I'm not sure if I should open up a Bakers or the Stagg Jr that I've been holding on to for over a year now.

17 points in the last 75 seconds or some such.  Too bad most of us had given up on it by then, myself included.

Yeah, well, you and Paddy were right, BUT . . .

The outcome was never in doubt as far as I was concerned - after all, Dallas was playing Washington, and I've been watching Wash since Bill McPeak was the head coach.  Hence, tonight I am drowning my sorrows with still more VOB bonded while watching a Science channel show about how the universe is expanding and we all might get fried by gamma rays.:(

VOB BIB, damn good, how does 1792 compare to it?

Well, I really like the VOB, especially at under $15 per 750, which is about half the price of 1792.  I don't think 1792 tastes twice as good; plus, it's harder to find around here, and VOB is not common itself.  That said, I tasted the 1792 Sweet Wheat and liked it enough to go hunting.  The 1792 SW is now on my (very short) list of bourbons to "buy on sight at MSRP" whether I need it or not.

Thanks Harry.  Are the profiles similar between VOB and 1792.  I am assuming that 1792 is just older VOB....VVOB if you will.

Forgot to mention in the "what did you buy today" thread, but I also picked up an Old Forester Single Barrel. First time I've seen it locally. Cracked it right away and dang, I'm impressed. Has a lot of Birthday Bourbon notes to it minus the oak. Has just a little bit of that OF funk (acetone-ish notes) that I think will subside after being open a bit.

Good purchase.

I own an American whiskey book with history, tasting notes, rating blah blah blah. I've noticed a lot of the users on this site love OGD 114, went to check it up in my book and it got a rating of NR (not recommended) with an underwhelming review. That being said, should all reviews be taken with grain of salt? What makes OGD 114 so liked?

Newbie - just goes to show you...I am new at this (only been drinking bourbon 4 months now) and I also purchased a Whiskey, Bourbon and Rye Book (by Clay Risen, 2015 edition) - in it, he rates OGD 114  two and a half out of four stars - meaning "very good, approaching excellent".

Everyone's taste buds and preferences are different - as they say, one man's poison is another man's pleasure.  I purchased OGD 114 as it was only $25, and found that I agreed with his take on it.  I also watched a few video reviews of it on YouTube.

I think that for me, after reading his review, and seeing several other favorable reviews on YouTube, and of course the comments on this forum, I was willing to take a chance - and I'm glad I did.  Although I found it to have quite a bite throughout the entire palate and finish (which was expected from the reviews), I also found it to have a very nice, almost chocolately taste on the palate and finish. I drank it neat.

In the end, a reviewer's ratings can only be a rough guide - especially since the sample batch THEY tasted will almost certainly not be from the same batch YOU taste - this is especially true with single barrel offerings.

By the way, I HIGHLY recommend Clay Risen's book - if you get it, make sure it is the 2015 version.  I am not affiliated with him in any way.

Regards

OMG, too funny, the book I was referring to was Clay Risen's book, I just have the 2013 edition.

That IS funny!  Either HIS tastes have changed in two years (which is possible), or OGD 114 has changed (which is also possible!)

But, then again, in the current 2015 edition, he gives Troy and Sons "Blonde" Whiskey 2 1/2 stars - I went out and bought a bottle, opened her up, and both wife and I thought it to a bland, hay tasting disaster - I poured the entire $40 bottle down the drain!

It has the dubious distinction of being the ONLY bourbon/whiskey that I have absolutely hated and discarded immediately after tasting it.

Are you sure nr means not recommended, and not "not rated"

According to the 2015 edition of the book by Clay Risen, NR means "not recommended" The author doesn't include bottles he hasn't rated.
