I know this isn't bourbon, but it's a pet peeve of mine...  I saw a Hibiki 30 and 21 at a store today.  I asked what the owner was asking just for giggles without any intention of actually buying, but he bought them retail in Japan for his own personal collection for $2300 and $500, respectively.  It's always weird to me when owners display their collections at their stores.  They know they will invite questions.  It's just a big "look at me" game.  Meh.

Passed on the new Yellowstone Select. I haven't heard much about it, so I will pass for now.

Passed on Ezra Brooks 12yr for, get this, $60. At Total Wine of all places. (This was reliably priced in the mid to high 20's as recently as a few weeks ago). There is a rumor out there that this is either going away or losing its age statement so perhaps this is a money grab for the remaining stock. Or, it could be a sign of the times which means that anything with a double digit age statement north of 10 is going to come at a significant price.

Passed on everything, I am not yet at bourbon zen (there are still dozens I want to try), however, I have decided to drink through my bunker of about 25 bottles.  I am only trying to buy things on sale that I can't justify passing on.

Ooooooh, Amazing restraint on your part Golzee!    I can barely pass ANY 'sale' Bourbon.....And, my bunker is well over 200-bottles.    But then being OCD, I can't relate to common sense.

Passed on EC12 (age statement on back) for a bottle of OGD114 on bottom shelf. It was on sale for $21. Plus, I never tasted OGD114 before.

Both are very good, can't go wrong here.

@ $21 around here (which does happen occasionally), I, too, buy OGD 114 whether I need it or not.  A hint on the 114 (thanks, Squire, I still remember) - let it sit a few minutes after pouring.  It really opens up but is STILL 114 proof so sip carefully.  If it's too hot, add a LITTLE water and let it sit a few minutes.

I spent a bottle or two experimenting to hit my favorite spot of 114+water.  I'd found it after two or three tries on the first bottle; the rest was training myself to remember what I liked.

Regarding my earlier post about sales too good to pass up, am I wrong to pass up Stag JR at $48.99?

That is pretty much its going rate around here, so it's not like that is a "steal" per se.  That said, if you don't have any, I would definitely recommend you pick a couple at that price, as long as they are batch 3, 4 or 5.  Now that BT has worked out the Stagg Jr. formula, I think it is as good as virtually any bourbon on the market, and is a compelling buy at $50 IMO.

I really wanted to like this, but it just tastes really hot to me. Even more so when adding water unless you leave it sit 5-10 minutes. Then I found myself proofing it down near 100, and I'm starting to ask myself what's the point. ..

I really like Stagg Jr. so I'd probably pick it up if you don't have one already.

well, how do you feel about Stagg Jr?  to me, it's meh... so I've passed on quite a bit of them, but I did buy one bottle of batch 5 that I haven't opened yet.  kinda hoping that changes my opinion of it, esp with all the glowing reviews of it on this forum.

I actually haven't tried Stagg JR yet, it is on the border of my price range. I think I might pick this up though since I missed out on some cheap KCSB last week.  The batch # will be the deciding factor, as I have heard mixed reviews on all o the earlier batches.

Passed on WLWSR.  $55 for a 750 and $75 for a 1L.

Good grief... WLWSR can be had around these parts for $16 a 750 or $32 a 1.75! Those prices you ran across are just a few bucks higher than COMPLETELY INSANE!!

Ummm... Good pass!

There is a recent review of Yellowstone Select on YouTube done by Matt at Big Red Liquors . . . he liked it.

Not a store selection, but let's face it, he is a salesman.  The only whiskey I've seen him review and not recommend was Black Maple Hill Oregon Bourbon . . . cheers!

I might stop shopping at that store altogether.  That's some serious price gouging.

Hmmm.  My list is pretty long here.  I have my favorite local store, and stop in every week to chat and see what's new on the shelves.  Unfortunately the last couple months haven't been to my liking.  Passed on Yellowstone Select at $70, Blade and Bow at $70, 291 Bourbon for $60 or 70, all the orphan barrel bottles, and a barrel select AD Laws four grain bourbon for $75.

But these guys have hooked me up the last couple of months with several bottles of Pliny, a Weller Antique and a Rock Hill Farms, so I'm willing to take the good with the bad....

We all decide what works best for us.  There are some highly thought of Bourbons that I just never took a liking to and that's fine.  I'm glad others like them but if it don't suit I leave it on the shelf.

That's outrageous, I mean, outrageous.  It's good whisky and all that but it's still just basic Heaven Hill recipe with longer aging and a bit more proof.  Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the HH basic recipe Bourbon but for that amount of money I can get 5 bottles of 86 proof Evan Williams black label which is close enough.

No doubt. It was a favorite value pour for me in the mid to high $20's. No clue why it suddenly went to $60 at a big box store of all places. It seems that anything with some age on it is suddenly going to cost us a pretty penny.
