Liquor Store "Huh?" Moments

A liquor store owner told me today that "Weller is made in Pappy barrels" <_< Nice try, dude.

As Willie Wonka would say-"strike that, reverse it" and then he would have been right.

I can forgive store owners and clerks for not being as enthusiastic about bourbon as we are here on SB.com, but that one takes the cake.

I really do like the 'packaged-in-a-net' offering in your pic, musekatcher.    I'm not sure I'd equate Blanton's with a carp (or is that a sucker?); but I love the comparison, and the pic is quite nice.

Went into a local store that had just started carrying Blanton's and they had it in a locked case which I thought was odd. When I asked the owner the price and he stated $149.99 I almost laughed.

I asked him why it was so expensive,  his reply, "since it comes with it's own box, it has to be worth quite a bit "

Meanwhile,  the other area stores are $48.99- $54.99 lol...

He's right, you know. But only if the box it comes in has 2 more bottles of Blanton's in it.

Crown Royal also has it's own box (and a bag too).

I miss my old liquor store shopping days.  I'm a native of the DC area - grew up in P.G. County which was liquor store heaven, but moved to Northern Va as a young man and discovered the joys of bland, generic, sterile, overpriced ABC stores.  Knock $2 off a bottle and call it a "sale".  Big whoop.   Furthermore, the clerks are generally clueless as to the products they sell.  Another thing that has always annoyed me is that they commingle ryes and bourbons under the "Bourbon" category, so if it's a rye you seek you have to comb through the entire bourbon category.

So I was stunned when I went in my local ABC last week. and perhaps they got tired of hearing me (and/or others) complain about it, but they had created a separate section for the ryes.  One tiny victory for the dignity of man.

Last night.... wtf.

one of my favorite drinkers from last year was 1792 High Rye, I went through 3 bottles in December and figured it's time to replace... not as easy to find now.

Called a shop I do business with often, but the store is like 45mins-1hr away... they told me they just got it in and the shelf is full. Drive out last night, walk in... no high Rye?  I ask "the new girl" where it was, she says "I pulled a few bottles for you".

Grabs the bottles out... 1792 Ridgemont?  She also sets some other ryes on the counter. She then says here is your 1792 and I pulled a few other bottles that said Rye on them.  Seriously? I told her 1792 makes like 6 or so different bottles... she just chuckles and says, "hey who knew".

2 hours of my life I'll never get back... smh

I've gotten this line before when calling around on stuff I knew could never fill a shelf, so I've double checked on the phone before getting my car.  "Are you SURE?  I know there are a lot of offerings, but I'm asking about the high rye, does it say 'high rye' on the bottle?"

Its extra brutal when I ask that exact thing and they say "yes, I am sure".  Brutal...

Unrelated I'm sure there was a memo from owner to employees: "No matter what the customer asks for, say, 'yes, we have that' just to get them in the store."

Saw 2 bottles of ORVW at a little corner liquor store today for $399.99 ea. Does that qualify as a "Huh?" moment?  They were just kind of mixed in seemingly randomly with all kinds of other stuff. There was a shelf tag for Lot B as well for $499.99 but no bottles.

I had a good "huh" moment today.  Stopped in one of my usual spots and actually looked through all the tasting bottles.  There was a half full Ancient Ancient Age 10yr.  Got the clerk to grab my HHBiB and I inquired about the AAA.  "Oh no, we don't have any for sale....it's just out here in case somebody has never had it and wants to sample".  It was delicious!  :D

That's pretty cool!  It is all about the experience and journey.  If you have never tried something and a proprietor is able and willing to share a taste, I would certainly try to support them as much as I can.

Had one last week when I went by one of our local stores to pick up a bottle of WSR for a friend.  Knew they were the only store in town that had any Blanton's so I went ahead and grabbed a bottle.  Asked if they ever got any W12 or OWA 107.  He went over to a bottom shelf behind the counter and picked up a bottle and set it in front of me and said a regular customer didn't come back to get it so ended up leaving with this:

I do have a store close to me that has a fantastic selection luckily.  And the Total Wine I go to has a decent selection.

Very nice! I'm hoping to see some of those new Weller bottles at some point, but the latest ones I know of to pop up around here were the previous version.

The place where I picked this up has only the new bottles.  A couple of weeks ago I got a handle of WSR there in the old bottle.
