Tried the original Woodford Reserve yesterday for the first time. Got the 375ml bottle, it was on sale and seemed like a nice size for testing a new bourbon. I found it to be just okay. I'll probably use the rest of it for cocktails and stick to the EHT SB that I have opened for sipping. I guess I'm not a Woodford fan, I didn't much enjoy their pinot noir special release too much either. Double Oaked is probably my fav of theirs.

Started the weekend with three fingers of ER10.  Fantastic pour, nicely balanced with a great nose!  Hat's off to BT for maintaining an age statement and very good profile here, while many of us struggled and complained about the shortages/rolling blackouts.  Well, it's still pretty much readily available (and usually under $30 per 750 here).  That, to me, is worth an attaboy!  Well done!

Finished up with a couple fingers of the KBA pick OBSF (had to punch the cult card!-_-).  I am very impressed... although a little thicker mouthfeel would be appreciated, this is a fine pour.  Like a delicate flower, it definitely wants/needs water to bloom, but wow, just wow, when you hit the sweet spot, it opens up nicely and give you a generous dose of honey, mint and leather.  As I noted a few days ago, the finish is even enhanced after the down proof and a little air time...

P. S. I can't wait for Steve's palate burnout to subside, so he can get back into this one and chime in with a little more detail!

Bueller?:D

Christmas arrived at about 11:47 am this morning. I was a good boy and waited until this evening to open up these bottles. I started with the Barrel Whiskey. Wow! See the American Whiskey thread for my thoughts on that.

Drinking this OBSF now. First time I've ever had a pour of a barrel select I participated in. That's pretty cool. It's exactly as I remember it - hot and powerful right out of the gate. I've been adding drops of water and letting it breath. It takes a little while to get there, but when you find that sweet spot, it really shines just as you noted. I don't remember the finish being this strong (in a good way) probably because of how many samples we had to try.

I'll put up a longer report that details the barrel pick process after I figure out which forum to put it in.

Cracked open my newly purchased bottle of ER10.  Haven't had ER10 in quite some time and I've gotta say, I don't remember it being this good!  Lots of sweet vanilla and on the nose with a strong hit of pipe tobacco and oak.  Tasting is much of the same, but with the addition of cherries.  Why have I waited so long to get back to Eagle Rare?!?

A friend came over and we finished off a bottle of standard OWA by doing a SBS with the store pick single barrel OWA I bought this week. I knew which was which but he tasted blind. We both found the PS to have less of the hotness of the standard and a much more syrupy, thicker mouthfeel. I don't mind the hotness of OWA and still don't, but it did stand out in the SBS. He found the PS to also have more flavor. We disagreed here as I thought the standard OWA had more flavor variety. Both had that sweet strong vanilla flavor that I associate with Weller. Looking forward to getting to know these private barrel bottles over the next year as I now have enough on hand that I can drink without saving them for the occasional pour.

Finished off the night with some EWSB 04. It was nice and after the Weller, the oak flavor came through very strongly. I may be getting sensitive to it as EC12, HMcK10 and now this all seem to be more oak forward than I remembered.

That is interesting to hear. I recently finished my first fifth of ec12 and I found the oak was less prominent the more I drank it. Maybe for me it was more mental and for you it was more palate fatigue, but I had the opposite effect

Worked through a 750 of Larceny last night (with a little help from a friend or two).

Finished off the remains bottle of 4R OBSO sourced through a fellow member for me from Beverage Warehouse while enjoying a couple of hours in the hot tub with my bride following an Italian dinner out where I had a generous pour of MM as an appetizer.

A small pour of EWSB 2004 store selection, and Knob Creek 2001 to finish.   Happy Sunday!

I passed a major milestone at work this week, so I'm finally taking a few moments to celebrate.  Starting the night with a 2013 Michter's 10 (barrel 13H208 if anyone cares).  The nose on this is up there with some of my favorites.  It's not quite as room filling as Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye, but it is close.  I get bittersweet chocolate and coffee beans, brown sugar and melted butter, vanilla beans, polished leather, and cookie dough tonight.  The oak isn't quite as favorable on the palate, but overall it tastes like a somewhat washed out version of the nose.  Definitely some red hots in there tonight.  Good buttery mouthfeel.  If I had to guess where this came from, I'd say B-F as it noses and tastes like Old Forester to me, but internet scuttlebutt says it's HH.  Ah well.  Them's the breaks when you buy mystery meat bourbon.  I don't support Michter's anymore due to rumors I've heard about their business practices, though I may have to reconsider once they release their own products onto the market.  Regardless, one of the nicest noses I have run across in my years of drinking bourbon and rye.

Beam's Choice (not so good), Angel's Envy (my first bottle and I'm pretty impressed) and some Rhetoric 21 which I think is very good.

Eric,

I've been out of the loop for awhile - what are the rumours you've been hearing about Michter's business practices??  I just got a bottle of 10yrSB and I'm looking forward to trying it.

ER10, followed by the KBA selection OBSF,  proves again to be a pretty fine one two punch...:D

At a local bar for a trivia night. Woodford, then JDSB. I started the night with a sip of OBSF before we left. The 4R wins, and I probably couldn't tell the WR from the JDSB one after the other.

Had a nice trip the bourbon glass this evening to finish out the weekend. Kicked things off with a small pour of EC22. It had a nice smooth sweetness to the finish that just lasted forever. Then followed a big pour of regular BT. For dessert I had some 1792 Port Finish. Still had the craving for more brown water after that, so I went back the the BT well for a smaller pour to finish the night. It was a tasty night none the less.

There is a whole series of rumors passed mostly on The Bourbon Truth blog.  Here is a link to the most recent rant:

Chatham also blatantly appropriated multiple abandoned trademarks and intentionally began marketing as if the brand has continuously operated since George Washington's time.  That said, I am jaded enough at this point that as long as W&S distillery gets off the ground and Chatham/Michter's continues distilling, I will probably resume purchasing.  It is hard to stay mad at a brand that does know how to blend and selectively filter well (thus makes a good product), and can only really be accused of pretty minor badness that many other distilleries also commit.  Heck, Henry Rifle Co did the same stuff with trademark appropriation, and I'm a huge fan of theirs.  Seems somewhat pointless to remain hypocritical.

Thanks Eric!  I'll check it out.  I too enjoy the Michter's bourbon wherever it's coming from.

1792 again to start the evening - and finish off this bottle.  Pretty darn good particularly for the price

I finally cracked open an ER101 that was given to me about 4 years ago. As best I can tell it was bottled in 1997. It definitely has more substance than the ER10 SB (which I also enjoy).
