Bulleit is such a big brand that whoever is supplying it is most likely doing so on contract to specification.

I agree. But I admit I don't know anything about Bulleit. I also won't bother to research it, as I'm not a fan of Bulleit. They're a fraud and the poster child for everything that's wrong with the American whiskey industry.

Well it's good that OGD is not going away.  I have been skeptical of the rumor all along because I had a dealer mention this about OGD114 over a year ago, and it never came to pass. OGD114 remains plentiful on all shelves. Is somebody planting these rumors just to scare the loyalists into stores to move products?

Again, we knew that OGD was not going away. There was only the possibility that one of the labels was going away, and, it was only under consideration and not a done deal. For all we know it's still under consideration. As for the rumor, all it takes is for something like this to be discussed at some high level at Beam and by the time it gets to the third person down the chain the story has morphed and they're walking around telling people that OGD is going away. This is why when rumors about Beam come up, I ask the guy I know there what's up and report here to hopefully put the rumors to rest.

That would be Barton. It's highly possible the Brown-Forman barrels were also contract distilled. The Beam barrels are probably bulk sales.

Quotebox please go away

I did a bit of checking on OGD114 in a few places.  About all I can say is that it's readily available around these parts in stores that have traditionally carried it.  Some are charging $35 now.  My buddy in the panhandle of FL who loves the stuff mentioned it going up to $37.99 in his local area as the cause of him switching to other daily drinkers.

I assume certain stores in certain areas have caught on to the particular market for OGD114 and are experimenting with some creative profit enhancement techniques, since I don't think any sane person would pay upwards of $40 for it.  At least not where it typically retails for $25 +/- a few bucks.

The first actual confirmation of anything regarding OGD just came from Cowdery who tells us that the 1.75L 80 proof OGD is being discontinued.

Not a bummer for any of us here, but it is a confirmation that the brand is under pressure.

I thought they had been discontinued for a while. I haven't seen one here since the rebrand. Nice to get confirmation.

Perhaps the more disconcerting statement was this.

The brand's high proof expression, Old Grand-Dad 114, probably will be discontinued next year, Beam sources say.

While we are speaking of Beam rumors, when I was at the Louisville Costco the liquor guy told me that Kirkland's Bourbon (the real Kentucky deal, not the Tennessee replacement) was coming back in three years. He said he had been down to Beam the week before and was assured that the barrels aging at Beam would be ready in three years. Question is, now that Kirkland's Tennessee Bourbon is going for $30/L, what are the odds that the 7YO, 103 proof Kirkland KY Bourbon will come back at $20/L?

You never know I suppose but I'd say somewhere between Slim and none. And Slim is already on his horse headed out of town...

Ouch. :( I, too, am happy that I picked up some for the bunker but unhappy to hear the rumor confirmed. While the BIB expression is great, I always preferred 114 and it has always been in the rotation since I first discovered it several years ago. Sad to see another venerable label become history.

Damn. This was never a daily pour for me, but I usually went through a bottle every year or so. RIP to one of the great values out there.

Well, it is not quite dead yet! The sentence does say "probably" and those decisions have a way of changing over time, especially if there is a ground swell of support. But I don't it can come from just us whiskey geeks because we aren't really the most important part of the consumer base, no matter what we like to think!

Besides, it will probably be back after a while with a label change and a 50% increase in price. Oh wait, that would be Basil Hayden NAS 114...

Down to 1 1/2 bottles for me--until January when I'll restock, perhaps for the last time. Perhaps more in March if lucky. Sob.

For my two cents worth, I don't drink any of the current OGDs. I was lucky enough to find several cases of mid-80s OGD Bonded several years ago. It is 8 years old and doesn't taste anything like the current stuff. (I know they are supposed to be using the same mash bill but there is a distinct difference in SBS taste tests. I have bought several bottles of the current stuff to see if it has improved but I can still taste the funk.) My 80s stuff is limited so I drink it sparingly and don't usually give it out though. On a side line the 750s of 114 are cheaper than the bonded around here..

Yep, think you hit it right on the head:  Basil Hayden 114.  Coming soon to a store near you.

When MMCS came out the price seemed kind of strange to me because MMCS has similar specs compared with OGD114 — $25 for one and $55 for the other. Looks like Suntory is fixing this discrepancy... just not the way I would have preferred.

If they really do come out with a barrel proof Basil Hayden that's a few years older than OGD114, this isn't a terrible trade. I'd of course prefer both as options.

Last night, I was gonna write (per I think Bruce's post)  WHATHTEHECKYOUDOINGGIVINGTHEMMARKETINGTIPS????

Like, they wouldn't have thought of this themselves, right?  Whatever - I have my case or three or more of 114  (who's counting? and, what's a case? 6? 12?) bunkered and am starting on the BIB corked to sit beside my bunkered orange caps.  A conservative estimate says that, if I don't share and drink nothing else, I'm good to about 89YO.  I think I need a few more just in case.:P

See my post above about Suntory execs executing a premiumisation directive.

They've already thought of it.

I picked up a case and was lucky to find them at $17 a bottle. I can't believe it's being discontinued.
