My liquor-store owning buddy, who just returned from a barrel picking trip to Kentucky told me today that it had been "confirmed" to him that OGD114 was going away.

I hadn't been on this thread in a couple weeks, so I hoped he was getting bad info.

Nevertheless, I went ahead and picked up a case at $19 a bottle. (While remembering how I was a week or two too late when deciding whether to pull the trigger on case purchases of ETL and EC12 both)

  • 2 weeks later...

Bought two bottles for $18.99 today, they were closing out their stock.  Not sure if this is the beginning of the end.  I better enjoy the 3 bottles I now have bunkered.

As I understand it, all existing OGD 114 is either already on the shelves or somewhere in the distribution channel.  Distributors in Ky have already advised store owners that once current inventory is gone, that's it.

The only Beam product that I bought with any regularity.  Getting easier and easier to focus my purchasing.

This would have really bothered me a couple if years ago, as the 114 has been one of my favorites for many years.  But, I am 2 bottles in to the current BIB iteration, and I love it. If they can keep this up, I'm good.  I will miss the 114 bottle design , though.

That's kind of how I'm approaching it.  If they get rid of the 114 I'll just buy the BIB instead.

Until they can the BIB....

And then I stop buying the brand altogether.  I'm sure they won't miss me, but the feeling will be mutual.

Snagged one of the last 2 OGD114'S on the shelf at Total Wine today.  $22. Also grabbed a couple bottles of the latest Beaujolais Nouveau for Thanksgiving.

For what it's worth.....

The OLCC has changed the status of OGD114 from Regularly Stocked Item to Special Order Item.

What's sad about this situation is that NC just started carrying it this year and now it's discontinued. In just a few months it has become my favorite. I talked my local store into stocking it for me and the shelf stayed replenished, but now down to just a few bottles and no more coming in. I've bunkered a few (as much as I can afford to) and I will definitely miss it. I think the OGD BIB is "ok",  but it pales in comparison to the 114. Just so much more flavor there and weirdly "less hot" despite the higher proof IMHO. Farewell Old Grand Dad...I hardly knew ya'.

i thought the 114 was decent. not great, but decent. that said, at its price point, it was awesome, and a deal that couldnt be matched anywhere else on the shelf. I introduced a few friends to it, one of whom says its his favorite pour now. today I cleared a shelf of them, more for future gifts to him than for my own use. imagine 5 years from now when he hasnt seen any for years, and he gets a 114 gift

Agree with these wholeheartedly.  I have not just bunkered a few 114s, I have STOCKPILED more than a few 114s (with the blessings of my wife, believe it or not).  Through diligent experimentation, I can now replicate the OGD BIB as well as play around with OGD from 80 to 114 proof, and, I have it all documented so in case I forget what I'm doing . . .).  BUT, until I become disenchanted with OGD BIB off-the-shelf, many if not all these in the stockpile will go untouched.  [ASIDE: SOME relative is going to get a windfall if the bourbon bubble continues.  I sure hope it is Matt.  Maybe I should put this in my will . . .;)]

Last week, I bought three at one store, leaving 5 on the shelf. went to the counter with them, and the owner said "loading up while you can, huh?", to which I replied "there's a rumor they're being discontinued, you've heard it too?". He responded that his distributor told him his last shipment of them that he had recieved were the last batch going out. So, that combined with what you guys are saying legitimizes the rumor, to me. There is still plenty of it around though. Bought 5 more today at another store, leaving a good 8-10 there.

At what point is it considered stockpiling, harry?

I'm not Harry, and would never presume to answer for him; but, I'd offer anybody asking this question this opinion.....

It's NEVER considered 'stockpiling', if your intention is to drink and/or share the bottles.   So, let your conscience be clear on that point.

Now, an altruistic person may say one should never clear a shelf, especially of something unlikely to be replaced from stock; but that is another question... between you and your better angels.

I am also not Harry!  But, I would suggest that you have too much stockpiled when you can no longer close your trunk.

I like OGD.  Not sure if I have a preference for 114 or BIB.  Both are solid bourbons.  I currently have a 114 open.  I see a lot of both on the shelves.  I probably won't miss 114, if the BIB is still available.

Historically, I've probably averaged drinking a bottle (or two) of the 114 every year.  At that rate, I'd consider buying two bottles to be stocking up (for me).  :)

Now, OGD BIB is another story!

But that's just me, and I'm not Harry either...
