Seem to have always struggled with rum cask finishes with malts more than just about any other style of finish and I am not sure why that is. Haven't tried this particular Springer though. I suppose I will just have to keep trying until I figure it out!

It's a strange thing. I hope you find one you like. I'm not a big fan of rum, but this was an outstanding pour. Honestly, was a little timid to try it remembering the AE Rye.

I liked the AE rye but it was so dominated by the rum that it almost became its own category. Not a lot of bourbon finished in rye that I can think of other than a recent release from Jefferson. I have not tried it.

But where I have struggled is with barley malts like Irish and Scotch. Still looking for that rum finished whiskey that I really enjoy. I see it now and again with independent bottlings in Scotch but not often with an OB like this Springbank.

Both Cooley/Teeling and Bushmills have had a rum finished whiskey but neither have done much for me.

Started with a Ledaig 10 year old which I think might just be my favorite peated whisky. It's tropical, briny and meaty, and doesn't skimp on the peat.

Moved onto this... Which is ironically less peaty but still fun nonetheless. Cheers all!

Dewars.  That's right, slummin it with plain ole Dewars.  It's all my uncle drinks, so that's what I bring to the holiday party.  Rob Roys all around

Cracked the MacCS yesterday to decorate the tree (a little late) and to watch my SB fantasy football team lose in the playoffs.

Well, I'd love to have Mac CS like the others, but I missed the boat on that one.  Last evening, had some Famous Grouse 18, which is a blended malt of Macallan, Highland Park and Glenturret.  A fine dram indeed, and one that I have bought multiples of at around $70 when I have come across it (it is now discontinued).

Longrow Red Fresh Port Casks.   Sweeter and more simple than I remember from my last tasting.  Bottle open for about a year.  Neat in a Glencairn.  Picking up a more of a charred scent now that the bottle has oxidized.  An enjoyable dram, just not up to my expectations.  YMMV, hopefully just an off day for the taste buds.

CB Spice Tree Extravaganza while munching on Marcona Almonds fried in Olive oil.  Great pairing.

Longrow Burgundy 14. The rest of a sample I had archived long ago. Liked it so much I ended buying a bottle at auction. Hopefully this pour will tide me over for awhile before I inevitably have to crack it open.

The evening started with Compass Box The Circus before moving to JB Distiller's Masterpiece before dinner. A lovely Schramsberg Blanc de Blanc with the rib roast tonight

We've been drinking a bit more scotch through the Christmas season this year. Normally I pour an Irish or scotch as a change of pace to bourbon, but that has reversed itself over the last month.

This week I've poured Bruichladdich Islay Barley, Kilchoman, Laphroaig 25, and the new release DE Lagavulin. The wife is absolutely loving the Lag.

I've been trying to finish some of my bottles that have been open for a year or more. One such bottle is a Signatory bottling of 16yo Glenlivet aged in 1st fill sherry. I had a large, delicious pour last night but wasn't quite able to kill the bottle. One more pour tonight should do it.
