Same, it's one of those bottles that someone like me can't stop themselves from buying at the distillery.  On the positive side I split the bottle with my brother and I do like it, I don't get any of the vitamin taste in this one though in truth it doesn't generally bother me.

Yeah, most of the older Dickel stuff (say 8 years or older) doesn't have much if any of the vitamin taste. I had several opportunities to buy this at $80/375ml, but passed. I haven't seen any in awhile other than one priced at $149, which will probably sit forever at that price.

I haven't been willing to cough up $50 for the 375ml of Old Ripy or Bond & Lillard either.

I got home from work today and had a tough time deciding on what I should pour. Although I have some good things open, I feel that anything I have tonight would seem kinda "ho-hum " after the things that were tasted last night at Vosgars house. Oh well...... I reckon I'll work on some low fill bottles so I can make a little room on my open bottle shelf. So it's VOB BIB for me this evening. :)

Cheers! Joe

^Vosgar can you please share more details on the 76 Early Times and 69 Old Cabin Still?

What did you enjoy the most out of the night?

The Early Times was pretty bland, which wasn't too surprising, but I have to say I was disappointed with the Old Cabin Still. Maybe my expectations were a bit high. They weren't bad, there just wasn't much flavor or finish in either. The nose on the ET was almost non-existent, the OCS at least had a little of that old time butterscotch to it. What did I enjoy most? Even though Joe has done an amazing job with his Weller blends, the CEHT Tornado is one of my favorite whiskies and it would be tough for any current wheater to beat it.

^Very cool decanters but I guess they weren't worth the lead poisoning :)

Not surprised about the Tornado.

Here’s my story. I’m out today and drove by a somewhat rural ABC Store here in NC. I almost talked myself out of stopping but went in anyway. Looked around not really seeing anything but noticed some ER10 so I looked a bit closer. Sitting there on the shelf was this jewel.

It’s now mine of course and sorry local folks there wasn’t any more.

Tasting:

Good nose with a bit of fruit

I read the tasting notes from BT but can’t pick the expression, chocolate fudge up at all. Maybe tobacco but I’m smoking a 2003 Cohiba Reserva after the first sips. I do get some fruit and sweetness on the front and the heat comes through.

Good long finish and very enjoyable

Opened and tasted the Parkers last night and at 122 proof it drank hotter than the GTS.

I don't think it's $80 per 375ml good, which is the lowest price I've ever seen it. As I recall, the reviews haven't been that good either, but everyone's palate is different. Of course many don't like Dickel at all because of the "vitamin" taste that is definitely evident in the younger Dickel products.

I certainly understand the vitamin taste. What I have found is that when I make Dickel my first sip of the evening, it really is quite enjoyable and actually quite flavorful and sweet. On any given day, given the way that one's palate can change, the vitamin / peanut funk might not be hitting the spot. On the other hand, it might. Variety is why we stock our closets / bunkers, I firmly believe.

I grew up in McLean, and was a suffering fan of the Senators. Including before they became the Twins, and the new franchise after. I was in DC Stadium when Frank Howard hit a boomer home run off of Denny McLain during his 31 win season. We lost 12-1 I recall. I hate the Yankees, because they represented everything the Nats weren't. Ha.

I've seen some black cap handles of the OGD BiB how would that compare to the new bottles? Just wondering if it's worth picking up.

REALLY late on my response, and I did see Gummint Beard's post on the SBS with an orange cap.

FWIW, OGD BIB is my most consumed when-all-by-myself bourbon.  When the orange cap was replaced by the black, artificial cork, I wondered if the profile would change a lot and did bunker some.  I swore early on it did change.  Now, I am not so sure.  OR, the profile may have shifted, but I don't think it is better or worse, just slightly "other".  But then, I think that happens over time with any large dump, mass market bourbon.

I will admit to one peculiarity, though: I keep an orange cap bottle near my TV chair in a trash can.  BUT, the bourbon in it is black cap OGD BIB and has been for the last several years.  It's just something tactile - that unscrewing without taking my eyes off the TV.

EDIT - Read through the rest of the posts on this thread.  Decided I better get back on the thread, so --

Spent a nice hour at the local VA hospital being tortured in Phys. Therapy - and boy did it feel good.  Felt so good when I got home that I washed my wife's car, folded and put away laundry, (which is my job, anyway, but . . .), cleaned out the cat litter boxes, fertilized the back yard, played an hour of computer games, and smuggled recently bought bourbon from the trunk of my car to some vacant spaces in the dining room and in the basement bunker.  Only five more bottles to find space for.

Celebrating this absolutely wonderful, productive day with two cubes in my SB Glencairn filled 3/4 full with OGD 114.  AND, I'm driving no more today so . . .

oh, yeah, the thread . . .

Harry I should clarify this isn't the new black cap artificial cork bottle but an older style handle with actual handle and a black screw cap.

I consider you the authority on OGD BIB in these parts.

As a dedicated OGD BIB drinker any ideas on black screw cap old label OGD BIB? I've only seen 175s and 375's packaged that way but the 375 of OGD with the Black screw cap I have is heads and tails over the others, its definitely not super old it's got Beam DSPs on it. Since the 86 proof always had the black cap I just assumed those were using up the last of the old bottles.

You sure that's NOT an 80 proofer?  Then again, it has been YEARS since I've seen a handle of OGD BIB.  Time flies when you're having OGD.:)

Nice collection.  I am sorry I cannot help you.  If Squire is still around, I sure hope he chimes in.  I betcha he could give you a day-by-day summary of changes to OGD products.  ASIDE - I miss him.

Night cap for the wheater Thursday.

Very different than other two as there's not the typical whaeater
sweetness, very dry. Good but my least favorite tonight.

Wholeheartedly agree with all of that. There are some days when I just can't get enough of Dickel No12 and I love the flavor and sweetness, and then there are other times when the "vitamin" taste seems to come forward and I don't enjoy it. I also think the taste is stronger with newly opened bottles. It's the only bourbon that I have this type of experience with, although there are certainly other bourbons I like better some days than others.

Very nice Kevin.

Interesting you didn't like the orange cap all that much. I have maybe 3 or so bottles in my bunker, one open, and I love it.

I had a black cap 375 but I took it to a concert and didn't remember how it went over.

Fishnbowljoe and I got together for a few pours tonight after our Wednesday night cigar club meeting fizzled out. Started out with pours from a couple of decanters I picked up over the weekend, an Early Times from 1976 and then a 1969 Old Cabin Still. We followed those up with Joe's latest Weller blends, and as usual, he knocked it out of the park. That boy sure knows how to vat! We then moved on to a Virgin Bourbon 7yr 101 that Smokinjoe picked up for me....outstanding whiskey. Thanks Joe! Finished the night by killing off the last of a CEHT Tornado. Great way to spend a Wednesday :)

This sounds like a stellar night. Nice work gentlemen.

Here's some pics. It's DSP-230 black plastic cap handle BIB. There's a 09 stamp on the bottom.
