It's a sleepless night.

 

After a crappy Crown Royal, enjoying a CEHT BP and JDSB BP side by side. And I must say I'm enjoying the Jack far more. Yep, that settles it, I bow down to you with respect Jack Daniels, you beat BT, and won me over after all those years. This is stellar whiskey.

Tasting:

Good nose with a bit of fruit

I read the tasting notes from BT but can’t pick the expression, chocolate fudge up at all. Maybe tobacco but I’m smoking a 2003 Cohiba Reserva after the first sips. I do get some fruit and sweetness on the front and the heat comes through.

Good long finish and very enjoyable

Opened and tasted the Parkers last night and at 122 proof it drank hotter than the GTS.

One hell of a haul, kind of jealous here ;-). How is the '17 Stagg ? I really liked the 2013 which was also a low proof Stagg, i'm hoping to get one this year.

Interesting you didn't like the orange cap all that much. I have maybe 3 or so bottles in my bunker, one open, and I love it. 

 

I had a black cap 375 but I took it to a concert and didn't remember how it went over.

I like it just fine, the small bottle i had in that old picture is long gone thought it's still in a drawer somewhere for use as a flask, many orange caps had died honorable deaths before him and at least a couple will we have the same fate. The black cap is just a better pour,

INteresting on the single DSP there, pretty sure all of my older OGD's have both Frankfort and Clermont on them. Two of the  86's are stamped 01 and 03 and one is stamped 99 and 01 which I always kind of assumed were the date ranges for the bottle stamp. The Orange cap bottles I'll check when I get home. I actually love the old OGD 86, had to have a small pour while I was putting all of those back in the bunker last night!

Crack open one of those bad boys and I'd like to hear your thoughts/notes. Obviously, taste is purely subjective, and I've dug the ones I've opened. I have few of the 86 proof bottles if you'd never had and would like to trade. Those are tasty too.

On airplane earlier so had limited choices.  Almost went with standard BT but decided to try something I don't have at home. JB Devil's Cut.  It seemed  better than I  remember from the only other time I tried it which was at the distillery tour.

It was United. That Devi'ls Cut was was pretty good.  Good enough to order a second pour.  For my second pour, I should have ordered BT for a direct comparison, but I was enjoying it enough to go for 2.  My recollection from sampling it at the distillery was that it wasn't any good, so I was pleasantly surprised.  Who knows, maybe my palate was just in top form.

Also last night at my hotel bar I tried something I have had before, the JB Distiller's Masterpiece.  The one I had was PX Sherry finished.  Very smooth and well balanced, not heavy on the sherry part. I wasn't sure I would like it, but I liked it a lot, so much it makes me question my usual avoidance of finished bourbons.  Anybody try that one before? Are there better (or equal considering the high price of the JBDM) options with the same taste?  Joseph Magnus maybe?  Others?

Ha last time I had this was on also on a flight to lovely Midland Tx, better than the Jack alternative.

Also surprised Aria does its own picks of 4R. What specific bar was it? I'm guessing this is t something on the casino floor.
