Had my wife’s family over last night for a late Father’s Day Celebration. Started the evening off with a pour of Russel’s Reserve 10, then moved on to CEHTSmB, and finally OWA107. Right before dinner, her sister made a very unexpected and awesome announcement, so we had a celebration after dinner. We polished off a bottle of Barrel Select Blanton’s. It was a good night.

Rooting around one of my infrequently visited cabinets and came across an open Willett Crazy Bong Bottle from I don’t remember when.  Drinking it over a cube with a CAO La Traviata while lounging on the front patio.  This is a damn pleasurable whiskey!  Decent heft to it, and does not show any “too” youthful notes.  Nice finish...very nice, actually.  I would bet this particular bottle is a HH sourced whiskey, and a good one at that.

Some delicious Weller SR. I really believe that quality has improved dramatically. Maybe its just what I like, but whoever is in charge of blending currently is doing a great job! I like the "new" WSR more than an "old" version of W12 I bought in 2015 (I haven't seen any "new" W12s). In any event, this works just fine for me.

^^^ Me too.  Though I have never been a fan of WSR, and felt that it had deteriorated even more in recent years, I have sensed an improvement in recent tastings.  I’ve had several pours in a couple of bars in the last couple of months that I thought were markedly better.

Having some WTKS after a day of sitting outside smoking wings and listening to music. The Misses and I are about to make some s'mores.

SJ, I used to think WSR was cheap as well, and rarely bought it, focusing instead on OWA and W12. But that has changed. I just pulled some excellent OWA Single Barrel Select from 2016, and it only confirmed my thoughts. Don't get me wrong, some of the "new" WSR is better that others, it just happens the most recent bottle I got (purchased just last week) is really good (better than some of my old shape OWA bottles that were sometimes "off").

Over the years, OWA has always been the cream of the Wellers for my tastes.  In fact, I sensed no noticeable degradation after the age statement drop, and tight supplies.  Maybe, not as many “lights out great” bottles/barrels as there had been previously, but still well within the good+ profile range.  The 12 at times has been so sooty and astringent that open bottles have sat for years on my bar.  I only buy it now, so to have for other people who like it.  WSR has never been much of a buy, except when it was being pushed into Georgia some years back at $9.99.  It went from bad to worse, but as we said before, I believe it has improved.  I really think the best barrels during this tight supply environment have been going to OWA.  For 90 proof wheaters I take Maker’s every day of the week.

Started with a SAOS 10 year, then cracked a fresh bottle of Weller 12.  The SAOS tastes much better tonight.  I hope the W12 improves with age.

Parker Heritage Collection #10 (24 Yr. Old) BIB Spring 1990 (100 Proof), thanks goes out to @Masset1982 for the chance. Very nice, very tasty, nice dark/golden amber color, very nice cinnamon, vanilla, nice little burn on the finish, pretty smooth, the finish lingers for awhile. I've never seen any here in GJ since 2015.

Doing a little SBS with the Parker Heritage Collection #10 (24 Yr. Old) BIB Spring 1990 (100 Proof), and some Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr. Barrel Proof BIB (Batch 3 2014) 7-8 Yr. Old (129 Proof). The color, pretty damn close. The nose is pretty close, lots of vanilla, cinnamon, the PHC is kinda sweeter, the CEHT is more of everything. The taste of both is really nice, vanilla, cinnamon, but the CEHT is way more in everything, but still pretty smooth finish, and lingering. Probably not a fair comparison, but.....

Both are nice pours, but i would give the advantage to the EH Taylor too, specially this 129 proof, which is one of my favorite. Waiting to get 2 (128.1) bottles for the Bay Area, they should be here this week. One of those is going on vacation with me to the south of France. Cheers!

A young man in my office who is just starting his bourbon journey was over yesterday. We sampled all of these. Interestingly, our favorite was Weller Antique.

good time had by all!

Yeah proof will almost always win out in a sbs..almost. For the record, CEHT BP is NOT a BIB since by definition a BIB must be bottled at 100 proof.

This was £25, which is probably expensive in US terms, but in UK terms for what it is, is great value. WT101 is around £30.

And I agree... one of the best.
