Said good-bye to a W12.  This bottle, and all of its brethren in my bunker, dates back to probably 2011-2013.  These were the good-old days, when W12 was on at least some limited shelves in NYC for $20.99.  I remember making several trips to this store, buying a few bottles at a time, and muling them home to NJ. Still have several bottles from this period, and of course haven’t seen an affordable bottle of W12 since that time, so that is a good thing.

Anyway, because I paid $21 for this bottle and have some back-ups, I am able to look at W12 holistically.  And in that light, it delivers in spades.  This was good to the last drop.

Turned the last pour of this into an old fashioned.  I really enjoyed most of this bottle.  It’s been open for about a month.  Got back to it a few days ago and not quite as good as previous pours.  Had a pour the day before yesterday and the nose was pure grapefruit, which I hadn’t gotten before, and the flavor was very subdued.  Decided that because of the strong citrus nose to use the last bit for the old fashioned and ... it worked well.  I don’t know if I let this one sit at a low level a little too long.  I figure a month open and a couple weeks south of half way would not have been too long.  I’ve had whiskeys that have sat at least the same and continued to taste great or even improve a bit.   But, those last bits of the bottle were surely not as enjoyable as the first 4/5.

Finished off a good one last night during and after the LSU game. What a Great bourbon. I look forward to getting a WLW every year.

The Blanton’s I opened fresh on Saturday rode off into the snow today.

There was no point in even putting it on the shelf it was so far gone.

Sharing that big pour with the wife, btw.

:)

Sad to report that my bottle of McKenzie's BIB has gone to bourbon heaven.  Simply the best wheated bourbon I've had in years, and the best craft bourbon I've yet tasted.    Don't know when or where I'll find another.

I normally don’t remember how many bottles of a particular brand I empty, but this is the 3rd Dickel BnB I’ve emptied. I think “man this bottle hasn’t been on the shelf that long, how could I’ve drank so much in a short time”. Maybe I do have a problem... :D
