Just to chime in with you guys, children have put an end to my poker career as well (oldest is 3, so a bit less). Used to put in 200-300 live hours per year, but haven't played for a long while. I have been craving a Vegas trip too. Never really looked for good bourbon bars or retailers there. I'd imagine there's some good selections in the nicer casinos, but Vegas prices are typically so bad...

There are some excellent bourbon bars in Vegas with very good and vast selections and, yeah, no real bargains to be had there, either.  I'm out there at least once a year and use it as the opportunity to try something that I'll never see elsewhere.

Yeah I just started playing again regularly again this past May, but still only get 10-12 hours in on a good week.

I love Vegas for many reasons, but actually do not think it is a good choice for a poker trip.  Sure, there can be some epic games, but on a day in day out basis there are just too many nitty regulars and  pro grinders to make the game that favorable.  I'd recommend Southern California for Commerce or the new Hawaiian Gardens rooms.  Hear great things about the action at the Seminole Hard Rock in Tampa and am planning on taking a few days off this fall to check it out.   The In-laws purchased a condo there so I can do a pretty low expense trip, going with a buddy who still plays for a living and likes bourbon so it will be a fun few days.

I'm too cheap to gamble, but the wife likes slots. Last few times we've been to the Hard Rock, the card area is usually pretty tame; not a lot of wait like I saw when I was in Vegas.

Little blind SBSBS tonight with a RRSiB store selection (Rickhouse B, 5th Floor), RR 2002 and W.B. Saffell.  Boy, are these guys close, and all excellent.  The W.B. Saffell kind of gave itself away, as it is a spicy bourbon.  It’s good spice, but it is there and distinguishable.  The nose of the 2002 was the best, followed by the RRSiB and then Saffell.  On the palate, RRSiB was slightly ahead of the others.  Kudos to the RRSiB for value.  As mentioned, the Saffell has a nice spicy kick.  And of course the 2002 is really good dusty Turkey.

Opened this with my dad tonight and each enjoyed a pour (amongst some others).  Lovely 9 yr, 6 month private pick from 2015; chockful of caramel.  Glad I bought a few!

Agree that Vegas is not the best for making money at the lower stakes. I've been to Seminole Hard Rock before (again, years ago) and the action was pretty good. I think I first heard of Pappy on a poker forum actually, but this was probably 10 or more years ago and I didn't go out and buy any of the good stuff that was being discussed. Oh well...

WTKS ps & Johnny Drum tonight. Very different pours, but very enjoyable in their own right.

Cheers

I had several pours from an older value classic last night...Fighting Cock 6yr age stated 103 proof! I hadn’t had a pour in a while, and it was really hitting the spot last night! I’ve yet to try the non-age stated version available today, but I’m glad that I’ve got a bunch of age stated bottles in the bunker!

I had my first taste of the FC 6yr 103 about 9-10 years ago during my first bourbon-related trip to KY. It seemed so much hotter to me than Knob Creek 100 and WT 101, my other "high proof" pours back then. :+) I haven't tried the non-age stated version either.

If you ever get back to the Memphis area, I’ll have to let you try the age stated version again so you can see if your palate has developed a liking for it after 10 years.

Now that I've seen your man-cave setup, I'll definitely be back!

After a horrendous pour of BH Caribbean Rye i cleansed the palate with some pizza and I’m settling in with a pour of PVW20.

Hide the keys!

Seriously, really like the matching crystal coasters for the fancy Glencairn (and Yetis).

A couple of nice pours of ECBP A119.  A little over half way through the bottle and I have struggled to find its sweet spot.  Not that I haven't enjoyed it because I have.  However, I rarely drink a barrel proof at full strength.  This one is 135.2 proof and I typically proof down between 100 to 105.  Well, I have been misgauging this one.  Tonight, I proofed down to 108 and boom, it achieved flight!  Hmmm...now what? Another pour or ration?

You found the sweet spot and it’s hitting your palate tonight. Ride the wave!

I've tried Bourbon a few times in the last couple months since months away and most have been a shock to the ol' taster this here is working just fine.

Decant to a smaller bottle and put it in the fridge! Very tasty!

W12 dropped this week around here, and despite everyone and their mother seeming to grab some, I missed out. So I'm lamenting that with some...W12. Happy Saturday happy hour.

2012 FR Small Batch tonight while warming up the Weber for a porterhouse. Among the many flavor notes of this complex whiskey that the back label of the bottle suggests is “ripe red raspberries”.  No doubt, it’s there just over the top of the tongue.  Not something I see in bourbon, but it’s delicious.  Dark chocolate notes following make it positively sing.  Nice rickhouse nose.

Not much left in this bottle, so I have no doubt it will be finished after dinner...  :D

Newbie question here.  How are you actually determining the proof?  A proofing hydrometer?

I thought the precursor to the FRLE was FR Mariage. I thought that was 2013 and prior. Obviously looks like Im mistaken.
