Dialing it down a little.

The Buffalo glass tonight!  Me too!  Even as a dialed down Weller, WSR is still a pretty good pour.

I once posted i wouldnt take wsr if it was given to me. I really enjoy it now. Kind of like BT.. when you get a good bottle it is really good. This ones just ok but holding its own. The buffalo glass is pulling it through

Gotta remind people that WSR is just their vaunted OWA with water added.  When you look at this way it blows minds.

1792 Full Proof, an aerial view.  Just a few ounces of this. I like this stuff for a change of pace, but probably not enough to warrant another bottle. I think the WTKS shall receive a visit next.

I've never had that.  How was it?

It was different. Burnt brown sugar but not in a great way. Not bad but i was expecting more. It was hot at 128 proof…and unique, my friend said it made his top 5 but im not sure its one i would purchase again if it were available. Will have to revisit for sure. This iteration was lauded as one of their best so it couldve been my palate.

I feel the same about the 1792.

To me, there's an almost overwhelming taste of burnt caramel or Caro corn syrup. Definitely a buttery flavor also, but there isn't a whole lot more going on, at least to my palate.

Hmm well I hope it was just an off palate and it gets better next time.  I think WR might have a polarizing taste profile.  Some people seem to love it, but I'm not so sure it suits me.  Old Forester is the same way for me.  Many of the versions don't do much for me unless my palate is in a certain mood.

P.S. on the bright side that WR LE bottle might be the best looking bottle design in American whiskey though.  It looks great.

Earlier I enjoyed the last bit of an older Stagg Jr. This one was slow out of the gate, but definitely had a strong kick to the finish line.
I believe I have a copy in the bunker, I will give it a lot of air, whenever I get around to opening.
Switching over to WT101. I know this a left turn, but the 101 can stand up. Gotta luv WT101, it don’t back down for nobody!

Cheers

Do we think this is true?

I always guessed that the juice that went into WSR was from the least desirable barrels of that mash bill.

yes it's true.  Used to be 7 year old distillate for both products.  Since they removed the age statement on both, informed speculation is that these are both about 6 year whiskies.

OWA is not some hand-selected product;  modern taters have built it into being some kind of unicorn but in fact it is only a well-proofed young version of a very well-designed mash bill that happens to taste great at practically any age.

P.S. ...  don't confuse hand-selected private barrels of OWA with standard OWA.   Much of the modern reputation of OWA in the year 2022 constructed by modern taters is from the honey barrel private pick barrels.  But regular OWA is just a batched product of BT's wheated mash bill.

For years, both brands were considered bottom shelf whiskies, the price point of WSR vs OWA differed by $2 and the age statement was equal.

Agreed.

It also drinks hot, (I know, big surprise at that proof).

The issue is when I try to tame it with a splash, or a large cube, it doesn't really evolve, or open up in a good way.  Might as well buy the standard 1792 and save a few $$$.

There are other barrel proofers out there that  bring a lot more flavor,  with the heat.

Had bar pours of Wild Turkey Diamond and Old Fitzgerald BiB 19 Fall 2022 last night. The Diamond was better than expected. It had significantly more flavor and depth than the theoretically comparable Distiller's Reserve 13 year export, but did lack the oomph especially in the finish, which was disappointing. Glad I tried it, but there are better Turkey LEs to hunt.

I missed out on both of last year's Old Fitzgerald BiB releases and have generally found them to be more miss than hit (at least for expectations). But I have heard good things about last year's releases, with a preference for the Spring's 17 year. The 19 year was good, but I think past its prime and a little over-oaked. Good mouth feel, definitely some depth, but the oak was more than I would prefer. So a good bourbon, but not worth the crazy hype, and not better than the 15 year release. I may still go for a pour of the 17 year when available, which some say rivals the 15.

Glorious day, so out front listening to some playoff football on the radio with a Beam Black over a clear cube.

I don't normally work on Sundays, much less to the later hours.  But things need doing and "A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down".

Well, that or a nice wheaty & proofy drink.

Up early to make a fancy breakfast (no reason other than I wanted to), cleaned up (even though the House rule is - one cooks the other cleans), did some pre-gardening work outside (some bags of compost to the raised beds for spreading next week), compost pile turning (maybe 15 minutes just to say I did some), put in some solar walkway lights (drive holes in gravel with a big spike then stick the lights' posts in them and pack the gravel down so they stay upright), and started my taxes (well, started pulling all the paper together in a box) == ALL BEFORE Miami v. Buffalo started.

HENCE!  I'm declaring Semi-dry January over (got a bottle of OGD BIB out of the car trunk AND OPENED IT)..

So, I have no willpower.  So, . . .
