Staying in with the wife also.  Nursing a WLW before we switch over to champagne around 10.  The advantage of Central time zone is we can see the ball drop and be in bed by 11:30, maybe.

We just watched the New Year's festivities in Sydney, Australia.  Got to drink our champagne yesterday morning.  Much easier than staying up until midnight.  Got to watch the Georgia Bulldogs pull one out of their bumholes to beat Ohio State instead.  Couldn't have done that on champagne.  🤣

Was out at sister in law's restaurant.  Introduced several the table to WTRB.  They loved it.  It helped numb the pain from That Kick.

If That Kick was one of my golf shots I would have said I sped through it. Brutal last few downs for Day and Team.

Last night, after almost 4 weeks of no drinking due to recovering from foot surgery, I had a pour of FR Small Batch Select. My taste buds said 'thank you' and my liver said 'here we go again!'

I can relate.  No drinking late Feb-early April and mid-Nov to mid-Dec 2022 thx to med issues.  Hence, I already did my "dry January 2023"😉   So, today while watching the mighty Cleveland Browns test the skills of Commander Wentz and his crew, I'm sipping on RY 10 YR 100 proof SiB.  I figure by game's end I won't care WHO wins.

I brought in the new year with EW 1783 after my neighbors fireworks.

This stuff continues to impress, and be what I reach for when one is in the cabinet.

I get that cherry note, reminds me a lot of the lamented and discontinues HH 6 B.I.B.

Don't tell the taters 🤫 (another "flies under the radar" bottle).

Good stuff is still out there.  Don't get all hung up on the unicorns and games.

Happy New Year! 🥳

Revisiting this one.

You might need another pour or two tonight.  Might I suggest using the cheap s(&t to drown your sorrows.  Me, I am more than happy to see the Colts get annihilated.  I am sure @Kjbarth is as well.  The season is lost so let's try for the highest draft pick possible.

Dry January over.  OFR100 followed by a nice pour of FRSiB.

I did manage to sneak away for a bit and stop by one of my stores to pick up their single barrel pick of Ben Holladay. Looking forward to opening this bottle soon.

I will be curious what you think of the Ben Holladay..  I haven't opened my bottle as of yet. I should just open it and try a pour, but I have so many open right now..

Well, I started Dry January yesterday and I'm doing really well.  So far, I've only skipped one day!

Nice!  Interesting name on the Makers bottle.  Private barrel?

Good choices! Congrats! Guess the Blanton's barrel strength is pretty hard to get over there.

When we toured Maker's, they had an area where they finished and stored Private Select barrels in a limestone cave and noticed a lot of them appeared to be private picks.

Yup.  Much harder to find and considerably more expensive.  While wine-searcher dot com is not the "end all be all" of pricing, it's pretty useful for showing trends.  Run SFTB on there and compare "Europe" to "USA".  Big price differential.

Yes, it was a private selection that one of my local stores did.

I had to "import" the bottles I have of it from Europe a few years ago. The shipping costs was the worst part of it.

I found it while on vacation in France.  And cultivated a relationship while there, so I just bought more from afar to be picked up when I next visit. Will I visit France just to repatriate Merkun whiskey?  No.  Does the comparatively easy availability and lower price of SFTB, Gold and W12 (at circa $50 to $60 per 700 ml for the W12) puts a thumb on the scale?  Yup.  We enjoyed France immensely in its own right.  The bourbon was a nice bonus.

Similarly: 5-Star cruises that depart and return to San Juan (I do not even need an Uber to get to the cruise ships; I just roll the luggage two blocks) are very cheap up through April.  For $500 bucks per person, I can get fed for a week, work out, get work done (quite efficiently in fact), and enjoy local offerings (mostly food, I already live on a tropical island with booze and beaches).  Now...will I make sure that the cruise stops in St Maarten so I can get SFTB at Gulmohars at $175/bottle (the absolute max I'd pay for it, cheaper in many French locales)?  Well, yes.  Will I be on the lookout on the other islands?  Yes.

Do I want to stay married?  Yes.  Do I want to wake up with all parts intact (married to a Latina)?  Yes. So bourbon time shall have its limits, as well it should.

We work with what we've got.  Unlike many of you, I cannot drive & look, easily cultivate relationships with Stateside stores, etc.  So I do it My Way.

PS:  I found a vineyard that will ship one bottle of whiskey for $10 for every bottle of wine I purchase.  It's in St. Emillion and I'd buy those wines anyway, bourbon or no bourbon.  So if we end up with more than 16 bottles (4 per suitcase), we'll ship in that fashion.  I also have an address in France for the few outfits that still ship the named whiskeys - that's quickly getting to be a short list, most only sell in person and limit 1/bottle per person.  Also, the dollar is dropping against the Euro, sad, so sad.
