Annnnd?

Purty durn good!

Little hot at first, as to be expected, but it really evolved nicely as the ice melted.

I'd buy it again.

Glad you enjoyed.  I only like to lead people astray in a "good" way.

This was "The Holidays" lineup, so I've been dipping into this group ever since. A bit high end for what I would typically grab on a daily basis, but I have no super supreme choices (i.e. GTS, Pappy or the sort) and this is as spoiled as I get at the moment...

Ratings per my favs

BBC Disco 6 - A+

Larceny BP - A+   (my 1st taste - brought by SIL

4R SiB store pick - A   (wavered with A+ - it's that damn good)

RR SiB store pick - A   (Ditto as with the 4R)

Remus Repeal  6 - A-   (Not as good as #5 - just younger & you can tell)

KC 12 - A-   (still damn good)

Calumet 14 - B+   ( I like it but doesn't excel compared with others- still lovely)

Jefferson's Ocean Rye - B+   (I really like this - almost not a rye, but just enough & sweet)

OF Kings Ranch - B   (very tasty but hot)

Dickel 15 - B   ( definitely Dickel, but the 15 years helps a lot -mood whiskey)

Rabbit Hole - B-   (this surprised me - caramel, oak - light flavors but nice)

in fact, in the glass now...

The rest:

Willet 4 yr Rye - Me & the SIL got a small pour to finish the bottle - still quite nice

OF100 - mixed Old Fashioned & Whiskey Sours with it - not a better mixer out there

Peerless DO - brought by SIL - not better than WR DO or OF 1910 so I won't buy one.

RRSiB L&K pick - Barrel #16-516, Rickhouse M, Floor 5 (yummo!).   Prelude to Prime Sirloin Strips in a cast iron pan with butter, Caesar salad and garlic-cheese croutons with anchovies on the side.  Snowing now so can't get to the grille (sigh).  🥳

Old Fitz BIB to mark the end of one of the longest 4 day weeks I can remember.  Great whiskey.  Stitzel-Weller type wheaters may never be fully duplicated, but this is about as close as any has come, IMO.  It has a thickness, toasty brown sugar, and slight coconut hint that reminds me of those old S-Ws.😋

I found it while on vacation in France.  And cultivated a relationship while there, so I just bought more from afar to be picked up when I next visit. Will I visit France just to repatriate Merkun whiskey?  No.  Does the comparatively easy availability and lower price of SFTB, Gold and W12 (at circa $50 to $60 per 700 ml for the W12) puts a thumb on the scale?  Yup.  We enjoyed France immensely in its own right.  The bourbon was a nice bonus.

Similarly: 5-Star cruises that depart and return to San Juan (I do not even need an Uber to get to the cruise ships; I just roll the luggage two blocks) are very cheap up through April.  For $500 bucks per person, I can get fed for a week, work out, get work done (quite efficiently in fact), and enjoy local offerings (mostly food, I already live on a tropical island with booze and beaches).  Now...will I make sure that the cruise stops in St Maarten so I can get SFTB at Gulmohars at $175/bottle (the absolute max I'd pay for it, cheaper in many French locales)?  Well, yes.  Will I be on the lookout on the other islands?  Yes.

Do I want to stay married?  Yes.  Do I want to wake up with all parts intact (married to a Latina)?  Yes. So bourbon time shall have its limits, as well it should.

We work with what we've got.  Unlike many of you, I cannot drive & look, easily cultivate relationships with Stateside stores, etc.  So I do it My Way.

PS:  I found a vineyard that will ship one bottle of whiskey for $10 for every bottle of wine I purchase.  It's in St. Emillion and I'd buy those wines anyway, bourbon or no bourbon.  So if we end up with more than 16 bottles (4 per suitcase), we'll ship in that fashion.  I also have an address in France for the few outfits that still ship the named whiskeys - that's quickly getting to be a short list, most only sell in person and limit 1/bottle per person.  Also, the dollar is dropping against the Euro, sad, so sad.

Very impressive system good sir.

The size of that pour is indicative of the longest 4 day week statement.

WTKS in the glass tonight. Cheers all!

Save that bottle when it's empty.  It makes a nice decanter, and they're not making them anymore.  Now WTKS comes in a rather plain bottle.

SAOS SiB 9 year store pick.   I had a hankering for some good MGP.

I followed up with another MGP, Remus Repeal Reserve series 2, which is a 10 year batch blend of 4 different 10 and 11 year MGP bourbons.  They are both excellent, but the SAOS 9 yr barrel pick is better.

They both sound top notch. I had the Remus V last year, i thought it was great. I wish I’d had come across a SAOS Store Pick. Enjoy yours.

Cheers

I am an unabashed fan of MGP/Ross & Squibb. Just picked up a Remus SiB store pick, my second.  I have been threatening to put together an MGP Mega-blind just with the bottles I have but I don't think I could do them all in one sitting.

One of my favorite bottles I opened in 2022. I usually operate that there is good whiskey yesterday, today, and tomorrow so I often don’t buy back up bottles. But I did with this PS

Opened an 'old' bottle of EWSB Vintage.   This is one of the last of the ones before they started getting so much younger than 10-years.   One of several of this particular barrel that I hunted down back in the day.   A good un!    It isn't quite 10-years old (about two months short); but the obvious nutmeg, vanilla, a hint of cinnamon, and a bit of allspice make it a treat neat.    Straight up Heaven Hill!    And, at 86.6-proof (I still think weird & gimmicky) it's a very enjoyable easy drinker.   In fact I probably had one too many and left the bottle down several inches.   I have two more from this barrel, so that's OK.

I am trying to get to that place.  I still have a bit of lingering FOMO though.  I have that same bottle, too, and a couple other picks from them.  Love their "Day Drinking" video on Wednesdays.
