What rye are you drinking or purchased 2024

I first bought Dad's Hat, a few years ago, because I hunt in PA and I like to try local whiskey's.  Everything is locally sourced, distilled and bottled in PA.  That said....the earlier ryes were a little young for my liking, but this older expression is very good.   I'm terrible at describing flavor profiles, but this one has a nice rye spice, drinks a little above it's proof and is kind fruity, (if that makes sense), in a good way.

Is it $50.00 good?  I guess that's in the eye of the beholder.....as is the case with a lot of whiskey, there are better choices out there in that price range, but it does scratch an itch for a wonderful change of pace rye and I'll buy another when this is gone, when it goes on sale, of course!

So....should you buy a bottle?    Hell yes!    SB is full of enablers, and I'm one of them!

Ha!  🤣. Sounds like your journey with DH sorta mirrored mine, but you took a next step.  Sounds like it was rewarding.  I’m going to try again, too.  Thanks!

BTW, the DH guy is a member here, and posted early on.  It was his cool demeanor, passion, and transparency for his whiskey that got me to try it early on.  While it didn’t hit my sweet spot, I look forward to trying again.

Let me just add one more thing.  I think it would be more important to compare the Bulleit 12 against the standard Bulleit Rye (instead of the $100+  Redemption BP 10yr) but I don't have one on hand.  If anyone does, then the question will be "is the 12 year version worth the price versus the standard Bulleit?"  I can't say myself.

Thanks for the feedback on the B12R. I was always a fan of the barrel proof MGP ryes that Willett and Smooth Ambler used to put out. They didn’t need to be 12 years for me to love them, as many of my favorites were 7-8 year. In a world where we’ve seen many age statements disappear it is nice to see them periodically. I can still find those Redemption 10s for $100 also which are solid and not an unreasonable price for what they are. The lower proof of the Bulleitt is certainly less appalling but it’s a low risk with a $52 price tag here so I’m sure I’ll grab one, try to compare it to the standard Bulleitt

Damn I suck at the whole "not buying" thing. In fairness,  the WTRB was gifted, and I've never seen one of those Rittenhouse Private Single Barrels and, at $34.00, it wasn't too stupidly priced.

The JD rye...what can I say....I love this stuff 😁

I have a Woodinville CS that's been lurking in the back of the cabinet and I got it out for a pour a couple nights ago. Its got a nice chocolate note among the spicy characteristics and a bit of tootsie roll of all things!! It  reminds me ( sans the tootsie roll) of WP 10/100p/100% rye which defined rye for me when I first tried it and I LOVED IT!! A neighbor/fellow enthusiast bought the WP and HATED it!! He is a Basil Hayden drinker so I think WP was a bit much for him, I on the other hand though it was absolutely FANTASTIC, love at first sip. This Woodinville is a locals store pick and they done good. I need to hit this more often as its a really tasty rye, not exactly a bargain but damn good.

Just found the rye thread.  Yay rye!!! 🥳  In 2024 I've purchased significantly more rye than bourbon.  There is so much good rye in my area at reasonable prices sitting on shelves, ripe for the picking.  Whereas, much of the good bourbon is allocated, held hostage at liquor stores for exorbitant prices, or simply unobtainable for a variety of reasons.  Don't get me wrong, I'm still finding some good bourbon at fair prices (just not as much as I'd like).  The bourbon market is simply a more difficult obstacle course to navigate.

This Sagamore Spirit 7-year cask strength store pick is absolutely wonderful.  It was $65 at a local Total Wine, on sale from the original retail price of $92.  At $92 it was a hard pass, but when I saw it discounted to $65 I figured it was worth a shot.

On the nose I get a lot of eucalyptus, chocolate, and ripe fruit.  The nose transfers well to the palate, but I'm also getting a nice burst of baking spice, some soft oak, and a bit of vanilla.  On the finish the oak note continues to bloom, and I continue to get some vanilla along with the baking spices and the eucalyptus.  Very nice overall.

I don’t drink much whiskey these days. When I do have a pour it’s rye I tend to want more than bourbon. Rained out 4th of July activities and wife out of town means getting out some good stuff. These never disappoint. On the Handy now, circa 2014

2014 is the best THH.  No contest for me.  The Bookers is ok too.

Need a new drinking friend?

Between WT Rare Breed Rye and JDSB Rye, which do folks recommend?

Good question.  Can't go wrong with either.  I think the Jack Daniels Rye is more unique, but honestly might have more in common with a bourbon than a rye whiskey.  For my palate, it still has some of that sweet banana note (which I happen to like).

Rare Breed rye is more akin to a typical "barely legal" 51% Kentucky rye.   I personally prefer Russell's Reserve Single Barrel Rye over WT Rare Breed Rye for about the same price.

Let us know which one you choose and how it tastes.  Good luck shopping.

Followed your lead.   Also @b1gcountry's question reminded me that I haven't gone back to the JD rye in awhile.

Mine is the special release version from 2021.  Great stuff. I still say that rye whiskey is the best thing that Jack Daniels does!

Wow.  I haven't tasted the JD BP special release rye in awhile.  I guess I forgot how how unique it really is.  I may have to retract my previous statement that this has more in common taste-wise with a bourbon than it does with a rye whiskey.

Yes, this JDBP has plenty of sweet banana notes at the front of the palate (just like JD Tennessee whiskey aka bourbon).  BUT I forgot that after that initial hit, the sweet banana notes quickly transition to a "banana bread" note combined with a spicy rye bread note.  Wow, there is a lot more of a "bread" note, in a spicy way, in this whiskey than I remembered.

If any of you appreciate a good "jalapeno bread" like we do in the south where I live (oftentimes served on the side with barbecue) then you will understand when I say this whiskey has a bit of "jalapeno bread in a glass" character to it.  But mixed in with it is a pervasive sweetness that combines to make it fairly complex.

There is also a significant minty note as well.

Great pour.

All in all, a very complex and unique tasting experience that I recommend all SBers check out.

I think it’s important to remember the single barrel variance here for the JD.

Some are significantly better than others, but even the “worst” are pretty good.

The RB rye is batched and more consistent.

Well, probably eventually eventually...

Having an excuse to go out and grab a new bottle is always nice though.

I went on vacation to the local beach, my daughter was involved in a dance competition there, so I took a whole week. I took a lock stock and barrel 16 and a wt101 rye. However the whole trip I just had a few of the wife's white claws. Now that I'm back home the lsb is back on the shelf, but I've got myself a glass of the wild turkey. Cheers guys and gals. Hope all who celebrated had a great 4th.

Rittenhouse is the top pour around here if volume consumed is the indicator. But wt101 rye is sure giving it a run for it's money this year.

Fresh crack.

Don't let the glass fool you.

This is the only whiskey that I really like from WR
