Clueby
After the dinner we went to (see the "purchase" thread) we stopped by a friends. Tried the OGD 16 year (meh), Baker's high rye mashbill (ostensibly the same thing as the OGD but better), and AE Triple Oak. I was impressed with the AE.

fishnbowljoe
It was a long, but fairly decent and somewhat productive week. I rewarded myself with a couple of pours of Blanton’s this evening. Ahhhhhhh……

If you ask me (you didn't ) Beam-Suntory is really reaching with that Baker's "High Rye" brand extension. The Baker's brand is literally meant to be a certain mashbill (low rye bourbon), and Old Granddad/Basil Hayden is meant to be a different mashbill (high rye). The fact that the Beam-Suntory bean counters insist on marketing every possible permutation of the few different mashbills they have under an unlimited number of different brand labels should be recognized and called out by all bourbon reviewers and fans on forums such as this. Hopefully it won't dilute the brand recognition of the "real" Baker's Bourbon. This type of greedy marketing strategy that preys on uninformed newbies really rubs me the wrong way.
Harry in WashDC
Continuing to clean upper shelves in the laundry room and closets. Moved my WT MK Decades and 17 year to a lower shelf. Put about an ounce of the 17 in a small Old Fashioned glass and sipped it as dessert for a charcoal-grilled beef bratwurst dinner. It's 86.8 proof and is oakier than I expected - reminded me of an EC 12 YR although the 17's notes had more vanilla melding into caramel and more complex spice. IIRC, the Decades at 104 proof needs a couple drops of water per ounce to calm it down. We;ll see if that's true shortly.

smokinjoe
Got the Halloween decorations down from the attic, and before I get to setting them up, it’s a VOB 90 on a big cube out front on a beautiful late afternoon.
mbroo5880i
Simple yet elegant. Rough around the edges yet smooth on the finish. WT101. I can hear Jimmy whispering to the whiskey in the barrels in the rickhouse. "You are destined for great things, just be patient." Richnimrod
Brief story to lead into the What Bourbon Are You Drinking subject... This afternoon my Son-in-Law was in the process of emptying the home of his recently deceased mother, a widow of many years. He came across an 'airplane bottle' of Ezra Brooks 90-proof from probably the 70's, based upon the tax stamp. ...The only Bourbon in the home. He opened it up, nosed it, and had a small sip. Being the good boy he has always been, and knowing how much I would enjoy it, he brought over to my home and offered it. I said I'd split it or maybe he should just drink it himself. He would have none of that. He said it had to be mine. So I obliged and poured it into a mini-Reidel glass. Man that was a FINE POUR!!!! Ya' gotta wonder why the distilleries could make and sell something as fabulous as this for probably under a buck for that mini back in the day, and now can't seem to make and sell anything similar for under $100 for a 750....? Could make one scratch one's head for long time.

If this were true, there would be a bunch of old "James" and "Deanna" bottles of SAOS 7y, 10y, SBBP, and rye sitting around on shelves. I sure haven't seen any of the really good SAOS products sitting around anywhere.

Opinions differ Joe. Not dissing Smooth Ambler in any way, shape or form, nor am I minimizing what they’ve done, or what they have to offer. Like I said, just having a little fun. FWIW, I like Smooth Ambler.
