It's getting worse.

Tonight I opened a bottle of Maker's Mark I didn't even know I had; it's delicious. Simple, straightforward bourbon. Too easy to drink, too easy to like.

I know it puts out for everyone, but I'm helplessly drawn to it.

Dave, my problems with Maker's Mark are price and lack of finish -- I'd prefer less of the former, and more of the latter. What's there in the glass is, I agree, very good.

The KS seemed shellac-like tonight; I didn't finish it. The WT 12 y/o was tasty, but not as good as I remember. The TH rye was interesting -- it reminded me of freshly brewed red ale -- but not the treat I had been expecting. It needed quite a bit of water to keep it from assaulting my palate.

Could it be that I'm just in a crappy mood? I hope so. Otherwise, the recreational value of my liquor collection has just dropped significantly.

Weller Antique 107... this bottle's joining the Empty Bottle Club tonight. Then, I think I'll have some Stagg... but which one? Eeny, meeny, miney, mo...

After polishing off the last of the Weller Antique, I decided on Fall '05 Stagg. A great pour as always...

Messed around a bit last night and vatted Old Forrester 100 and EW 1783. The results were real good...for some reason, it reminded me a bit of some SW Old Fitzgeral Prime I had recently...with a touch of rye spiciness.

Tonight is wheater night!!!!! I'm currently on ORVW 10 107. A very enjoyable dram to say the least. I like it more and more the closer I get to emptying the bottle. Next will be Lot B, it's been a little while.

And to finish off the evening......WLW '06! I tried this at Whiskey Fest but my taste buds were fried! Tonight that will not be the case.

There is no spring Stagg for 2006. The Fall 2006 Release is 140.6 proof.

Actually, the '06 Stagg is a fall release. The '05 Spring Stagg was an unusual extra release - Stagg and the rest of the BTAC are normally only released in the fall.

As for my pours tonight, I started out with Islay peat, a pour of Ardbeg 10. Then I followed it with a pour of '06 Larue. Mmmmmmmmmm, on both counts!

Continuing on the wheater theme, I'm now sipping some Old Fitz BIB. I'd have to say that this is a whiskey that's better than its price would indicate... wheated bourbon's answer to Rittenhouse BIB rye.

Was intending to work from home today but the storm knocked out the electricity. Had to settlle for sitting by the fire with a couple of pours of Noah's Mill. Poor me!

We had a little freezing rain and then plenty of snow here in northwest IL. No power outages, at least in my neck of the woods. I just finished blowing out my drive-way and am sitting down to a healthy pour of OGD BIB.

Had an interesting tasting tonight with some friends, we sampled some bourbon and malt whisky. I chose 4 whiskeys to give something of a range.

They were:

- 1980's National Distillers Old Taylor

- Vintage Bourbon 17 years old

- Magic Cask of Compass Box (vatting of 17 year old wine-cask-finished Linkwood and a 14 year old Brora)

- 24 year old Port Ellen cask strength (3rd release).

The audience was highly intelligent and interested in fine drinks but knew little of their composition and history; I filled in that gap, somewhat. :)

The feeling was the bourbons were highly flavored and the 17 year old was superior to the Old Taylor by its rounded taste and complexity.

But the group generally liked the malts better, especially the Port Ellen although some admired the plush, elegant Magic Cask.

I liked them all but I'd give especial plaudits to Magic Cask and the Kulsveen's 17 year old bourbon whiskey.

Tonight was a Rittenhouse BIB cocktail night for me. First off, a Cocktail a la Louisiane, sort of a cousin to the Sazerac. 1:1:1 of rye, red vermouth, and Bénédictine, with a few dashes of Peychaud's Bitters and pastis. Very nice!

Then, an oversize Red Hook, always a favorite of mine.

I am trying to stretch a bottle of GTStagg and WTKentucky Spirit out to have some for Christmas, (but I don't think I'll make it).

So last weekend I opened a bottle of Johnny Drum 8 yo, and like the horse in Ren and Stimpy would say, "No Sir, I don't like it."

So today, (oh BTW, I hit the GTS and WTKS again last night), I opened up a bottle of Kentucky Pride. Like Johnny Drum it is bottled by KBD and also charcoal filtered, so I thought I would not like it.

I should say I have had several KBD brands that I do like.

But this turned out to be OK. Not overly complex, nice carmel/vanilla taste, no burn at all, 90 proof, 10 years old, but seems younger, kinda light to me, I am sipping it neat right now, will try it on the rocks next.

Last night I learned of some new bourbon brands.

We went out to dinner, to one of Jackson's best resturants.

When asked if we would like to have something to drink after we were seated, I asked what kind of bourbons do you have?

She replied, "Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, Cutty Sark and Johnny Walker."

I have heard of the Beam, but the other three "bourbons" were new to me.

So I ordered a bottle of Budweiser, and eventually went for the steak.

And hit the Stagg and Turkey when we got home.

I'm having some fun and opening a dusty bottle I found today. It's an Old Taylor 100 proof BIB that's a National Distillers product (Frankfurt, KY). It's got a UPC code so I figure it's from the eighties. The following no doubt has meaning to somebody here :) - DSP Ky 19 bottled at DSP Ky 14.

It's really good! It's round and has a long, caramelly finish. And the proof is making the cold snap around here disappear quite nicely.
