But My wife buys all those sissy flavored teas. However, the "orange and spice flavor" with a bit of Redbreast or Jameson 12 is one of my favorite cold remedies. I started with bonded Heaven Hill bourbon (not the corn-oriented 6 year version but the regular black and gold NAS). To this I added a dash of EC 12, to amp up the basic rye-recipe bourbon of HH. It was good, but needed a fillip. I added a dash of Weller 107 for its fruit and alcohol.Then two dashes of Peychaud's bitters and one of the oak-aged bitters Lenell once kindly gave me (aged in an ex-JD barrel).It's tasting good but needs a slight sweetness. Here, I could have gone to brown sugar for an Old-Fashioned, or red vermouth for a Manhattan, or the sugar and a bit of something anise a la Sazerac.I decided to go Manhattan and added some Martini vermouth, not too much, maybe 3:1 whiskeys to vermouth.Unusually for me and despite the kind of weather outside that reminds me of Kentucky last weekend, I added cubes to this puppy and swirled like nobody's business.I sipped, and marvelled at how good was the result. Would it have been as good made, say, the same way except only with Knob Creek for the whiskey element? Now enjoying the first pour from my brand new Saz Jr......perfect end to the evening. Then an EW 1783 and finished with an Old Forester.Last night the Beam Black did me oh so right (could have been 'cause I was reading Jim Murphy's praise in the Bible as a sipped it). It's not a blockbuster but there is a whole range of flavors to appreciate.Particularly liked the 1783 last night too-- getting no asparagus with that one!. I have a bottle of Elmer T. Lee that I bought over a year ago in Kansas and at that time, I didn't really appreciate it. Last night, I poured me half a shot into a glass and sipped it. I couldn't believe how good it was! I never really appreciated it before! How my taste is changing. Elmer T. Lee is great. Story was interesting enough. I dunno, modern westerns don't really do much for me, last one I really enjoyed was the Unforgiven 15 years ago. Tonight, I drank the last of the Hirsch, threw the bottle away and poured another drink from Four Roses Single Barrell (McScrooges Special Bottling) which has also been open. I don't want this to sound wrong, because I really like the Four Roses. But man the drinking of the FR1B made the boldness and taste of the Hirsch stand out! I already miss it. I had told myself that $85.00 is too much to pay for Hirsch. I was wrong! I will buy another bottle (or two, and bunker one) as soon as I see it. No matter what winds up in my bunker, the FR1B will always have a place. To my taste it's more than just great bourbon, it's damn near definitive. I helped my father in law (step- father-in law?) polish of a bottle of Lagavullin 16 (actually, I helped him open it) and it is great whisky. Scotch guys can get a bit uppity sometimes, so can bourbon guys sometimes. Great whiskey is great whiskey, period. Sometimes you find one that supercedes all others. Tomorrow it may be a different story. In my case, the FR1B is a benchmark but I am open to every new experience that comes my way. Just rambling a bit here I guess. Hope to try the Hirsch sometime, but if the best I ever get is the FR1B I know in my heart that I've had some of the best. Here's to ya.
