I know Gary has stated that the eucalyptus/mint of EC12 is basically gone in recent bottlings. In the old bottling of EC12 I tasted, the eucalyptus was overwhelming and threw me off of it. I didn't finish the bottle. Some folks don't mind the eucalyptus (not sure about Mike's palate, but a buddy of mine doesn't notice it even when it's hammering me over the head) , and of course with small-batch whiskey there's a lot of variability, too. Still, you might consider trying a current bottling rather than an old one.

Got about 6 inches of snow on the ground and more to come (sucks) so I'm stayin in and pouring some VRO HH. Love this for 15 bucks.

A little bit of everything....

Dane graciously invited me and Dr. François over and let us go crazy with his impressive collection. Many bourbons were tried, but two of the highlights have to be the '02 Stagg and first release of Pappy 23.

Not to mention that I got to head back to Denver with my first bottle of Russell's Reserve 101, courtesy of our host.

A big hat tip to Dane for a great night.

A couple of samples that Gary gave me a while back.

- Heaven Hill NAS (1970's): I'll describe this as dry with some faint blood orange notes, that gets drier at the finish. Nothing complex, but the nose-palate-finish all follow each other - nothing there that doesn't belong.

- Elijah Craig 12: Much drier than I remember it being, with more pronounced oak notes than the NAS.

Had a bit of EC18 as well. More bold, less balanced, but if you like dryness like I do...

All 3 pours were on the dry side for bourbon. I guess this is part of the distillery character for Heaven Hill.

Old Charter 12YO.... I like it! its very strong and seems to benefit by adding water.... or today I seem to need water in my bourbon.....

Thanks for the info, I do recall reading something about a change in taste since the older bottlings. Perhaps I'll try a recent one. And the corks on those older bottles are not looking too good either.

Tonight it is going to be some EW 23yr... If it is as good as my buddies have said... it will be worth the $220 including shipping...

I just got a bottle of EW23yo last week, I wish I only paid $220.00!

But then again Parker did sign mine.:grin:

What do you think of it?

My first thoughts says it is almost as good as the PVW 23 "A" bottle but not near as good as the PVW "B" bottle.

I think I need to add just a touch of water... the Pappy's are 86 proof.

I understand... you have a stronger will than I. I can only buy to drink... my curiosity gets the better of me.

I do have the last 6 BTeX I have not opened yet... mostly because the Woodfords were so bad I have been slightly concerned... ... and yes I know Woodsford is not BT....

Yeah, I'm glad I never got into 'em.

It ain't bourbon if it has come into contact with vino.

You see the post about BT's future "Experiments" will no longer be with wine finishes?

I think most people also concur.

Finished off a bottle of Stagg from last year. Followed that with Pappy 15 in honor of the arrival of my copy of Always Fine Bourbon.

Old Fitzgerald 7yo Prime (86.8 proof) from a 'Wildlife Decanter' (1972 -- pheasant).

Sipped a little neat, keep pouring some more diet cola atop it. When it's gone, so am I, for the night...

Just finished a bottle of Bellavista Franciacorta Cuvee Brut; this is an Italian sparkling wine that is made in much the same way as champagne.

Yes, that is some very good stuff. Had a bottle of it a couple weeks ago and really enjoyed it. A bit lighter than many champagnes but very elegant.

Well, it started with the EW 23, then MM Gold, MM 101, VW Lot B, PVW 15 and ended with the VB 18... great night. The EW 23 opened up nicely with a little water (~95-101 proof) and ranks between the PVW 23 "A" and "B" for me. Great stuff.

I think the night has ended with a new patent.

Had a Midnight (Guiness with a shot of port) and some Powers Irish whiskey earlier tonight at an Irish pub. The Powers was pretty enjoyable - nice honey and heather notes.

A few glasses of Brut Nature cava while watching the fights.

A splash of National OGD BIB (enough to confirm that I still don't like the bottle I have open).

To finish the night off, some Old Fitz BIB from DSP-KY-16 (Stitzel Weller). Very nice nose on the latter - strong honey and brown sugar notes. The palate isn't as rich as more well-aged versions of S-W bourbon, and may be a bit spicier.

OGD114 and ORVW 10/90 mixed 50/50 in a snifter. This is a good combo.

Thinking about some Pappy 20 after this. It's the end of my workweek and I feel like celebrating.

Last night I had Canadian Club 12yo with vanilla coke.

Tonight I had some VWFRR then Thomas Handy Rye with a innerspring mattress chaser. Time for bed!

Got together with a bunch of neighbors for a pot luck supper and to swap snowstorm stories. Started with a couple of rounds of Tom & Jerrys... then moved on to finishing off a bunch of near-empty bottles: ETL, ER 17, FR SB, FR SmB, PVW 15, etc.
