Years ago at a Gazebo, I was given a sample of some Overholt distilled I was told in the late 40's and bottled at six years old. I've kept it for a long time and here is a taste note. It is rich and heavy-bodied, sweetish, with a taste reminiscent of caraway, polished wood and roots. It's as if you liquified dark rye bread, doused it with the best vodka, and cleaned the desk top as you were dramming. It reminds me very much of Anchor's rye whiskeys except the latter are not as concentrated and not as old I believe. A taste of history and yet it's not in the sense that the rye whiskeys being made by the craft distillers will taste like this IMO if given the right age and entered not too high in the barrel.

Decided to see if my pallet was any better tonight after having everything taste bitter last night. I'm starting with some Weller Special Reserve Louisville from 1995 and I'm happy to report that everything is right with the world again! Sweet with huge maple syrup and carmel pallet with a 15-20 second finish...man do I wish the current bottles could compare to this. :(

Killed of a 4R single barrel now working on a 4R small batch yum. I think 4R is my favorite brand by far

After being rained on and getting my boots full of water in class today, I started with plain old Evan Williams black label and am now on a pour of Mellow Corn. This stuff warms the soul!

I decanted an Old Crow "penguin" decanter some months ago, and am enjoying it now. 7 yr old, 86 proof, 4/5 qt. As dark and thick as Karo syrup. Butterscotch and caramel, but not overly sweet. Balanced. Just, wonderful whiskey. When I close my eyes, I picture drinking this in some business baron's office, from several decades ago. Leather chairs. Oak panelled walls. Huge mahogany desk and meeting tables. Cigars. Titans of Industry. Money$$$. And, if you were the new advertising guy invited to the meeting, and you piped up with "Thanks, J.P., this is really crazy good juice.", you would find yourself on the curb.

On some heady duty medication to get rid of the worst case of poison ivy ever. No alcohol for the next week :( . So tonight I'm opening a bottle of Wild Turkey Rye and just smelling it, after that maybe sniffing some OWA

Cracked open an old label bottle of Old Weller Antique last night and it was absolutely delicious. My friends thought so too, judging by the half inch of whiskey still remaining in the bottle this morning.
